• Casper has had a little set back, will take a few more days
• Still hope to have him back before international break, we are still pushing
• We have a couple of cuts and head injuries with Flynn and James, but both will be available for tomorrow
• Abbott has made a very good impression in his first session with the group
• He will travel tomorrow but unsure whether he will start like Kevan, but we will see how he is integrated over the coming weeks
• I like defenders who want to defend, it starts and ends there and he does that
• He has the qualities to play inside and outside, which is important for us
• He is a nice prospect and seems a good character
• I expect full commitment to the club and the goals we have
• We have a good relationship with Sam Edozie, I understand he wants more minutes
• His commitment stands whist he is here and I trust him. He will continue to be part of the matchday day squad
• He is 23 years old and there was a lot of noise. It is what it is and he is fully committed to us after we spoke yesterday
• Daniel Peretz came in Jan and we have made a commitment to him to be No.1. We stand by that
• My commitment to Long to be No.2 stands also
• I think consideration with Ramsdale is about his story, which started before I arrived
• we have had honest conversations and he is still a part of the group and he has been very professional
• Lets see what happens over the next few days, but he has become a father again, so the situation is not straight forward
• Lincoln have lots of enthusiasm and have had 2 clean sheets.
• They will go long and play for territory and set pieces
• We must makes sure the ball stays on the ground as much as possible
• We must get 3 points tomorrow
• When you come into a new division you hold some surprises at the beginning
• They quickly change between a back 4 and back 3, either way they will be committed
• It will be a tough game, but we have to win this with where we want to be with our ambitions

If we do keep Edozie until January at least, I do think it makes the squad a little stronger from the attacking perspective. Sure he's not achieved as much in his Saints career as we'd have liked, or he'd have liked, but when he won the penalty recently it shows that he provides something a little different from the bench than what we have. Yes that's not what he wants, he's the same age as Matsuki and Fellows who get regular minutes, but he has Leo ahead of him, unless we switch him to the right? but he'll still get opportunities to play. I still wouldn't be surprised to see him leave to one of the countries that still have windows open but currently we have Dobbin and Akachukwu backing up Azaz and Leo, and only 2 senior strikers so if we assume Dobbin can also play striker, it would be handy to have an extra AM/Winger behind for when the fixtures start ramping up.

He's definitely been much worse than I expected him to be when we bought him. I thought getting him in was a massive coup and I was actually most excited about his signing than any of the others last summer. I thought maybe he'd been ruined somewhat by being played at wingback but he hasn't shown the form I thought he would do.

I'd be more annoyed, but looks like JWP has still got it, so provided Downes is free (can do the Jander role), we'll cause a lot of problems with JWP and Azaz both on the pitch in the middle. Its differnent to having Jander roving around all over the place, but equally, JWP is going to score and assist this weekend so its all good 🤩

Assists for other players to score? Fellows got 8 last season and Edozie hasn't even got to 8 assists since signing for the club in 2022

We're probably 4 or 5 games away from a Downes suspension so Jander needs to be back for that!

Fellows is very good at beating a player and somehow keeping the ball stuck to his feet before getting a cross in, just terrible at shooting!

The problem with JWP is whether or not he can fully integrate into the team culture that has been built up since last year and accepting that he is no longer the captain of the Saints team. At the moment he seems to me to be an individual in his own world from the brief appearances he has made in games and the odd clip we see from Staplewood. Understandably anxious to make an impact quickly he needs to settle into being a team player as well.

It can't be easy for him coming back to a club that is the same in name only to the one he left three years ago (tea ladies and kitsmen aside!) and operating at a lower level to the one to which he has been accustomed. He may have to swallow some pride although that is likely to have taken a knock anyway with all the shinnanigans that went on with him at West Ham. There is also likely to be some minor friction of personalities and roles to deal with, for example JWP will no doubt see himself as the free kick specialist but Manning has become used to that role as well. 

I am on record many times as not being JWP's greatest fan but now he's back with us I do want him to succeed for his sake and ours and hope that he will prove to be an astute buy despite his ageing years.  As an aside, one could postulate that if Ryan Manning's selection is based largely on his free kick skills and notbhis defending, having JWP in the side might actually mean that Wellington becomes first choice at LB.

 

As for Aaron Ramsdale, the message from Eckert seems loud and clear, Aaron is a Southampton player. OK, Long may be picked as back-up goalkeeper for match days but be in no doubt that if Peretz screws up too many times or gets injured it will be Ramsdale that keeps goal on the starting team sheet and not Long if he is still here.

I'm not sure why a few are still talking about JWP as if he's 35-40 years old and whether he's still got it. He's 31. He stepped away from the penalty last weekend so clearly not wanting to (or interested in) upset the applecart, his deadball still looks excellent, and he's feeling his way back into a very different side.

Genuinley can't see a downside to him starting or coming on when needed. I'll bet he's just delighted to be out on the pitch again and it's a massive bonus no doubt that it's in front of us lot singing his name.

I wasn't too keen on JWP being signed as Charles replacement.  But he has shown in his sub appearances that he is a class above.  He has to start tomorrow.

If I wanted to be controversial, I wouldn't mind Welington starting over Manning.  They're game is all crosses into the box and Manning has shown time and again that he doesn't defend wingers very well.

His strength is going forward, and to be fair, he does that very well.

Most clubs provide some details about the nature of injuries- we also used to provide more information. Jander has been out since the very start of preseason which is quite a significant period of time. It would be useful information to know how he was injured and some of the details which means he has been out for a significant number of weeks. 

p.s. How did not knowing if we would replace THB go for you?

Mirrors my thoughts exactly, in fact I'd prefer him to start and take corners, JwP that is, but I also prefer Wellington when fully fit defensively.  If nothing else he's quicker than Manning.

I agree. It’s completely different to Romeu or Walcott coming back. He should start tomorrow as he’s currently the second best midfielder we have available.

Could already see in the time he played, that, as before, much of our play goes through JWP.  He acts as a sort of midfield pivot in open play. .... gets the ball and moves it on in a positive way.

Plus the free kicks of course!

I never thought he'd return because of his wages, unless/until he was past it. But 31 isn't past it.  So I'm delighted to have him back.

Fellows has talent but he needs to harness it better. He's 23 though, not a complete youngster, so while there is still time to improve, he needs to show it more regularly. It's funny that his goal against Millwall came from playing off the left. I prefer Matsuki on the right anyway but if Edozie stays, as he can play both wings, I think it gives us more options. No disrespect to Akachukwu though who has played his way into first team contention. A bit of depth in those positions never hurt anyone. 

But, windows are still open. I'm sure Sam will be exploring all avenues still open to him.

Won’t be easy. Am just hoping this isn’t our ‘Oxford’ result from last season. Even the year we went up we dropped points to Rotherham (home) and Huddersfield (away).

Yes he was averaging a goal every 49 minutes up until his last goal now hes not scorer in 118 minutes. That’s a huge drop off. The Canadian Saganowski by the looks of it

Not saying “out of form” due to not scoring at all.
But overall consensus is that he looked tired on Tuesday and not as sharp. Can’t blame him if he’s being flogged every game; he can’t be expected to maintain the same levels every match . Last season we had the benefit of rotation with Stewart of course.
