St Marco Posted 5 February, 2009 Share Posted 5 February, 2009 Before people start with the "there is always next week" or simillar lines lets be honest here. We have won 6 games all season, what are the chances we will win 5 or 6 of our remaining 14-15 games? We have won once in our last 15 games, you have to be realistic. Now that is out the way I can't help but feel this game is one of if not thee most important game in at least our modern history. If we lose this game we will be 5 points behind Watford with them having a game in hand, potentially meaning if we lose we could be 8 points behind them. Add to that Doncaster have 2 games in hand and are currently 8th form wise would suggest they will probably win one of those games at least meaning they will be at least 6 points ahead of us etc.. etc.. If all the teams around us get something from their games in hands we could be as much as 5 points away from the team in the 3rd relegation spot let alone the team out of it. Now form is temporary. But with the games coming up you look at the table and think where could we get wins from realisticly? We will play Bristol City away, Preston and Cardiff at home. Those 3 games will be very hard with Preston and Cardiff in the playoff scrap. I can't see us winning any of those 3, maybe a draw against Bristol. Then after that is Ipswich and Birmingham away followed by Derby at home. Obviously Birmingham will be challenging for the auto spots to go up and Ipswich will for the playoffs, can't see any points with those 2. The Derby game i think we can deffinatly get something possibly a win. Then after that we have QPR and Charlton at home and play Blackpool away. QPR are doing well and are challenging for the playoffs, can't see us getting anything there. But the Charlton and Blackpool game i can see us able to win those games or at least draw. Then have Wolves and Sheff Weds away and Palace at home. Obviously will lose to Wolves but it is possible to get something from the Palace and Weds game, maybe a win vs Weds. Then we have Burnley at home and finally Forest away. I can't see us getting anything from Burnley as they are a physical side doing well goin for playoffs and Forest are a different side now under Davies. So of our games realisticly if i'm being kind i can see maybe wins against Bristol Derby Charlton Blackpool Sheff Weds Now would 5 wins be enough to keep us up? When all teams have played the games in hand and could be 6 points clear to start? So for me Watford is the make or break game. If we lose i think it will knock out 2 teams from the relegation fight meaning us and Charlton will be gone. If we win then we're back in the mix and have a chance, we cannot afford to lose this one. I hope the players understand this. Reading the Watford forum it would appear they agree http://www.wfcforums.com/showthread.php?t=26575 So come on Saints show the fighting spirit of the south, you can do it no more excuses! St Lightjaw Posted 5 February, 2009 Share Posted 5 February, 2009 We have won 6 games all season Going off topic a wee bit, but does anybody remember West Ham lass? She took an item of clothing off every time the hammers won ( so i've been told ) Was just thinking about what item a "Southampton Lass" would be down to now. Gloves or buttons on the duffle coat ? VectisSaint Posted 5 February, 2009 Share Posted 5 February, 2009 I guess people will accept the inevitable sooner or later. With the current set up we will be relegated. I have already resigned myself to this, it makes it easier to take the continual bad results once you realise that we are ****ed and have been since this ridiculous experimentation started when Lowe returned. Watford is not a big game. I expect Watford to be relegated along with us and Charlton. So even if we beat them, what has that gained? Frankly, our hoe game against Watford was a "bigger" game than this, and we lost 3-0 with one of the most inept displays I have ever seen. There will be no-one happier than me if we achieve a miracle and escape, but anyone seriously thinking about how we will achieve this, other by miraculous means is merely prolonging the agony. Micky Posted 5 February, 2009 Share Posted 5 February, 2009 The biggest game in our history will be when we win the Champions League. You, I and many others may not be around to see it - but others hopefully will. Watford at Vicaridge Road - errr just another game.

I think a lot of truth is in what you say about "accepting the inevitable". The thing is i don't think i will actually accept it even if on the last day we need 4 points to survive. It just is too much to take really. But i think if we do win it will give not only the fans but the whole team a big boost of confidence and belief and that is all we are after. A belief that they can actually get themselves out of it.

St Marco Posted 5 February, 2009 Author Share Posted 5 February, 2009 In our history NO, in our recent history...not sure as it will not mean relegation for certain, so NO So you think it will be possible to come back from a 6-8 point gap then? Meaning we would probably have to win 7 of our remaining 14 games, 50% win ratio? Sorry mate but i think it will be the final blow if it happens. We would have to win the next 3 games and hope others lose their next 3 games just to get back on par. Can't see that happening really. So mathimatically it is not over until it is over, but mathimatically West brom can still win the Premier League but that is not going to happen, comes a time when you have to say "its not likely" and if we lose to Watford i think that will be the time. ExSt Peter Saint Posted 5 February, 2009 Share Posted 5 February, 2009 I am also resigned to relegation already. Even if we win this game, and that is possible considering the fact we play the odd decent game in 5, there is no way the current set up will keep this club up. By exchanging Jan for Wotte, we have done nothing positive. There has been no new-manager bounce and the only positive recently has been the return of Saga, who has shown just how inadequate the rest of the players are for this league and what mistakes were made in the 1st half, which have crippled the club and left us deeply in the sh1te. So, no I don't believe it's more important than the match against Sheff Utd on the last day of last season, as there was still hope then. Unfortunately the return of Lowe in the summer and his appointment of those Dutch clowns has fvcked everything up and left no hope.

Andy_Porter Posted 5 February, 2009 Share Posted 5 February, 2009 Would be the final nail in the coffin if we do lose, would require a minor miracle to keep us up. I am quite confident of a win though, we have to turn our luck against Watford around at some point.

sandwichsaint Posted 5 February, 2009 Share Posted 5 February, 2009 Heart says never give up till it's mathematically certain ... head has been saying since pre-season that we are nailed on for relegation under the ludicrous Dutch TF experiment. Way too many draws and our appalling home record have left us teetering ... I said we had to beat Sheff U and Watford to have any hope .... we didn't beat Sheff U and for my money Watford is now pretty much irrelevent ... IF we win we have a succession of hard games beyond that so it will only raise false hope.... The players and the dumbar5e 'manager' failed spectacularly (again) on Tuesday .... 'battling' points against Norwich and Swansea really had me thinking we might go D-D-W- which would have given us something to build on..... Can't help thinking we are due a pasting soon, Watford are a real bogey side for us .... don't think 5-0 to Watford or 1-0 to Saints will make much difference come the end of the season ... sad, but realistic. 1976_Child Posted 5 February, 2009 Share Posted 5 February, 2009 agreed with the OP. That said, looking forward, I think the most important game ever will be the last game of next season when we need to beat Brighton by a margin of 75 goals to avoid a place in the 4th div. ..but seriously, Watford is going to be huge. Still haven't decided to go or not
West End Saint Posted 5 February, 2009 Share Posted 5 February, 2009 I think the must win games have been and gone I know it is not over yet and you shouldnt give up hope but Donny & forest at home were the must win games playing a travel weary Sheff utd that only had 10 men for 50 mins was a must win game. Dont get me wrong I will be thrilled if we pull off the great escape but I cant see it happening and I will still be there supporting the boys whatever league we are in but this season I have accepted relegation. Maybe we need to hit rock bottom so our club can become great again a new board and a new ambitious British manager get rid of the dead wood in the team and build again

This time last season we were in pretty much the same position but I always kept the faith and Mr John did the business in the 83rd minute. We can't be so lucky two seasons in a row. We are down. St_Tel49 Posted 6 February, 2009 Share Posted 6 February, 2009 No - the biggest game in our history was the one that saw us relegated from the premiership. The cost of dropping to League 1 from the Championship is nowhere near the cost of dropping from the Premiership. Unfortunately, if we do, then if we are to judge from the experience of Leeds and Nottingham Forest, it may take some time to get back up. Leeds are still getting 25-30k crowds though.
