My dad went to the 79 final - brought me back a scarf as I was only 4...seem to remember that was when those ludicrous Sondico or Sturridge (?) Red and White Balls were being used...

Peachie scored a cracker too - as it happened my sister was babysitter for him at the time...happy days..once I went with her and Dave put on the video of 76 for me to watch, and I got to hold the medal!!!

I still have a spare ticket (somewhere) for that final. A mate I got a ticket for (non saints fan who fancied a day out at wembley) failed to show for the final after struggling to get to wembley on time from Streatham!! He at least paid for the ticket.

Didn't mention why I still had a ticket in the original post.

Maybe you already know, but I notice ITV re-runs of 'The Big Match' are featuring the 1979 League Cup Final vs Notts Forest this week. Been enjoying the weekly retro flashbacks and now an opportunity to see Saints albeit a 3-2 defeat. THURSDAY, MIDDAY ON ITV4

Thanks for the Heads-up Jim. Haven't seen that match since... well probably 1979. Time to set the recorder.

Readers probably won't thank me for reminding them that, from my copy of Match Of The Millenium, I read that the very next time we played Forest at home, just a few months later in the top division, we destroyed them 4-1. Forest were also reigning European Cup winners, Brian Clough [no whinger he] said, Southampton were incredible. Better than us in every department. And with his usual touch of humour he commented on his ugly CB Kenny Burns incurring a broken nose during the match. So out of disaster, comes something good.

Great character and a great manager.

I remember both matches, and whilst Wembley was obviously hugely disappointing I think the 4-1 drubbing was perhaps one of the finest home displays by Saints of all time - we absolutely murdered them for 90 minutes. At that time Forest were the best in Europe and with Shilton in goal they had gone something like 45 matches without conceeding more than 2 goals (hazy memory there though ;-)) - from what I remember Phil Boyer and Channon ripped them apart... I was gutted when we sold Boyer even if it was to bring in Keegan.

PS. Nick Holmes goal from the final is here:

This is good news and something to look forward to. I have been watching most of the Big Match reruns on ITV4, as this was clearly the golden age of football. Men had hair, centre half bruisers had names like Jim Steele, Chopper Harris and Bite yer legs Hunter, as opposed to the politically correct pansies that we pay an arm a leg to see today! Sod 2009...bring back 1979!

Anyone remember a game at Orient - we drove up only to find a note pinned on the gate to say that the game had been cancelled due to a waterlogged pitch, I am interested in finding out what year it was circa 70's so if any of you anoraks know I would be grateful.

I had soeone break my collarbone that day, very memorable for all the wrong reasons. I will try to watch it.

Don't try Hamster. Do it. Even my faulty HDD/DVD recorder is set to record it on HDD. Legod knows how I'll get the recording off it before it goes to the repairers, but I'll work i out somehow. ;)

A couple of days before my 6th birthday and I've hated Forest ever since! I'd love it if we stay up at their expense this season! Also our keeper, Terry Gennoe the worst post war Saints keeper? I remember my uncle didn't have a good thing to say about him after his shambolic second half performance in this match! :D

My first ever trip to Wembley that - I still remember walking up onto the terraces, looking around and thinking what an amazing atmosphere and stadium...shame we lost. There was a little bit of trouble after the final whistle behind the goal, so the stewards opened the perimeter fencing and me and my dad ended up walking around the edge of the stadium on pitch side! Happy memories

Just watched it. Great to see that our defending these days was no better back then lol

Oh and anyone notice that Clough and McMenemy were sat on the same bench almost next to each other.

Wierd also to see the crowd right behind the dug out and not have 10 squad members sat there. Only one sub ... jeeez those were the days.

Oh and interviewing McMenemy at half time - another thong you would never see happen today

Cheers Mike it must have been this date as Chelsea have only ever played Hereford twice and one of them being at Stamford Bridge. Think I would have remembered it better being on New Years Day though 1977

Actually Terry Gennoe had been playing very well. The Final totally shattered his confidence and he never regained it. That game was the end for terry Gennoe.

Unfortunately, he kept his place 2 days later for the delayed 6th rd tie at home to Arsenal. After we had ****ed all over them and finally scored with 20 to go, he tried to knock a corner over the bar but only slapped it against it, giving Price a one-yard header.

I'm pretty sure Peter Wells came in for the replay (again 2 days later). 3 games in 5 days!! Dont think the current boysh could handle that.

What a great game.

looks like their are half a dozen Alan Balls playing, he's everywhere? Some of the movement off the ball from both teams is brilliant in its simplicity. I had forgotten how great the game used to be, I have sedt it to series record on the Sky Plus now.

Didn't realise that it snowed! And who was Freddy Starr supporting?

For anyone that missed it today - it is repeated again on ITV4 tomorrow morning at 11.30am !

I ****ed up my recording of it yesterday, due to my using my semi-faulty DVD/HDD recorder one time too many before it goes off for its repair. I decided to dig out my old Philips Nicam Stereo VHS-HiFi recorder. At least the sound will be pretty good. Took me a little while to get used to it again. But it performed excellently on a test. Glad I kept it for emergencies.

Noticed that. Don't remember there being snow, but I'm sure there wouldn't have been in Southampton. Wembley would have been another matter, altogether.

That pitch looked heavy going.

In Lawrie's book 'The diary of a season' he explains how freddie star turned up at the hotel before the match, invites himself on the coach and walks in wembley with the players and onto the pitch unchallenged and starts walking in front of the band waving his arms about.

I cant remember snow either.Wasn't that terry currans last game for us?

Thanks for that link. So I then did what we all do on Youtube, I clicked on another video. This time it was the ZDS final and a chance to see a young Kevin Moore scoring our second. God Bless you Kevin in your fight for health!

Take a gander at the 1969 League Cup Final (Swindon v Arsenal) for a heavy pitch! Wasn't that the year they had the Horse Of The Year Show at Wembley a few days previously? It was also dire for the Dirty Leeds v Chelsea FA Cup Final (1970).

What is wrong with him? One of my favourites - his brain & determination made up for a lack of pace & skill - another Nicholl bargain (I think)

Thanks to Jim Bergarac for the heads up, I set the recorder, and was reminded of days gone by & things you no longer see at footy:

Managers sharing the same bench,

polyester tracksuits,

Adidas sports bags with a shoulder strap (I had one of those – red & white of course),

buckets of water for the sponge man,

churned up pitches & consequently goalies with muddy kits, no one gets muddy anymore, if they do, they change at half time,

Linesmen (not refs assistant) that would kick the ball back to the players (on one occasion a linesman went and retrieved the ball from behind the goal line), nowadays they wont even put a foot out when it rolls 6 inches past them.

Tight fitting shirts & shorts (one for the ladeez)

Great to see Stevie Williams playing, I knew his girlfriend at the time & asked her for his autograph, he duly obliged with a team photo signed by all the players. You can actually read the signatures (something else that you don’t see any more, autographs now just consist of a wobbly line with one or two discernable letters in them)

I don’t remember much about Terry Curran, how good was he? He seemed to spend most of the match on his arse.

Thanks to Bergerac for advising this match was being shown. I watched a recording of it last night and loved every minute. It's hard to believe it was 30 years ago. I was at the match in the top tier behind the goal. I'd forgotten most of what happened on the day but the memories came flooding back, especially the two great goals Saints scored. Brilliant.

I think it had snowed the night before, but most had melted the next day. Only in places where it had accumulated in heaps against walls that were in the shade survived. I remember having a small snowball fight near the window of the Wembley Indoor Arena which was hosting a darts championship. Wonder if we made it on TV:).

Remember the biggest chant outside the ground was "We'll be back again in May" only to lose to The Arsenal on the Wednesday, after drawing the 1st match on Monday at The Dell .

I really hated Arsenal after that, as we had asked for the game to be rescheduled from the Monday after a Cup Final and the muggy ****s said no:mad:

As somebody else said the poor lambs ca't cope with 2 league games in a week. just had a quick check and we played 6 games in 14 days, 5 of which were high tempo cup games.

Mar 10 1-1 at WBA.

Mar 12 FAC Replay 2-1 at The Dell

Mar 17 LC Final at Wembley 2-3

Mar 19 FAC Q/Finals 1-1 at The Dell v Arse

Mar 21 Replay 0-2

Mar 24 L 0-2 at Bolton !!

We then had 2 more games on 28th at spurs and then H to Leeds on the 31st.

6 games in 14, 8 in 21 on heavy muddy pitches and only 1 sub per game.

Men were men in those days ;)

And that's part of the reason the game as a whole is in such a parlous state.
