Give it to Ron Posted 30 March, 2009 Share Posted 30 March, 2009 Pulis was the make weight in the Andrew Davies deal where we got a £1m plus a big wedge off the wage bill. Davies has hardly played for Stoke and in the 3 games I have seen him play for Preston he has been shocking. On its own Pulis ranks along with the other great signings this year.. Forecast, Pekhart, Robertson, Molyneux, Gasmi a complete farce of our wage/loan budget.

Maybe because he'll be the only one we can't get rid of, but more in an Ironic sort of KD turn-around way as well As with Ali Dia the Coach and the fans knew after about 30 seconds that maybe Rupert will get into the team before Pulis. Torquay would not take Pulis back for free as you will find with Grimsby. If Henderson had stayed in charge of The Reserves he would eventually have been dropped from that squad regardless of injury. He is not a pro footballer as decided at all eight football teams he arrived at. He cost us in the region of £300,000 in the deal with Davies however the books show it. Rupert and Kim whatever next. Even the Dutch realised after a couple of training sessions but obviously they were told to get on with it by the boss. Miracles do happen but with our goalkeeper he was a footballer regardless of your comparison......I advise the lottery for you phil. Bring on the young uns one day. Anthony is now 25 going on 26 approx. Braishfield would like him on loan for a month before deciding on taking a free transfer...Nothing personal with Mr Pulis. I feel the same about other non footballers re Liptak, Smith AND Gasmi and that is only what the father of a coach tells me from watching them after a couple of games.:smt017

Gasmi like Morgan seemed to come from Georges Prost's recommendation Liptak well he played in the game on the day when the whole JP started to be made resgined thing happened, don't see honestly that the Board would have backed a JP choice at that time. JP seemed to be the only one who didn't know what was going on Smith - hmm - It is fair to say IMHO that the "dig out players thing" was set in a direction by the "Total Football Revolution" but then Holmes while not setting the world alight hasn't been a complete Ali Dia either What it REALLY shows is that maybe we need Terry Cooper or some of the other scouts we may have let go back as much as anything else, along with some WISDOM in the choice of instructions as to what we want them to find... So far, worryingly, one of the brighter prospects signed this season seems to be a youngster who just got a new contract if I remember right - Jack Boyle - didn't Wilde bring him across? ottery st mary Posted 31 March, 2009 Share Posted 31 March, 2009 I still think Rupert and Kim....Time will tell us JP did not have such choices and that Wotte was closer to the think tank throughout the season. JP has to be careful with his words because of monies owed. Wilde could not do any harm in view of what has gone before from the Chairman. One size is possibly your example of one in twenty, even though money was tight keep em coming...Not anymore ..Academy sign on similar amount over a couple of years and if you are lucky..bingo. Has had injuries for several seasons. His ability in the lower and conference league level is the reason for not getting games at the numerous clubs who have been asked to look after him. Not even considered a journeyman pro in the old scheme of things. Better players in the reserves have been moved on with a lot more ability by the Saints.:smt017
trousers Posted 31 March, 2009 Share Posted 31 March, 2009 (edited) I thought he broke his foot before he joined us, wasnt he injured when we signed him. http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/search/?mode=movenav&page_id=10514 Saints have completed the signing of Anthony Pulis from Stoke City on a free transfer. The former Wales under-21 international has penned a two year deal at St. Mary's bringing an end to his four year spell at the Britannia Stadium. The combative midfielder originally came to the Potters in December 2004 and enjoyed loan spells with Bristol Rovers, Torquay United, Grimsby Town and Plymouth Argyle. 24-year old Anthony is the son of Stoke boss Tony, but has opted to further his chances of first team football at St. Mary's, following Stoke City's promotion to the Premier League. He is currently out of action following a training ground injury picked up last week, but is expected to make a swift recovery. Pulis was on show at St. Mary's during Stoke City's pre-season friendly at the start of August and becomes the second bit of business between the two club's, following the departure of defender Andrew Davies. Head coach Jan Poortvliet said: "Anthony a good footballing player and he's young. That's good for us and he wants to prove himself. Maybe that will be easier at a club where the boss is not his Dad!" he joked. "At the moment he's out injured but we look forward to seeing what he can do when he's back to full fitness. We now have a lot of competition for places and Anthony will certainly add to that in midfield." http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/search/?mode=movenav&page_id=10515 The latest addition to Jan Poortvliet's squad comes in the form of central midfielder Anthony Pulis, although fans will have to wait a little longer before they find out exactly what he is made of… The 24-year old joins Saints from Stoke City on an initial two year contract, and is delighted that the paperwork on the deal has now been finalised. "I'm pleased to get it all wrapped up before the close of the transfer window," Pulis said, "and I'm looking forward to what I hope will be an exciting new challenge." The deal has, in fact, been on the cards for some time since the two sides met at the start of the month. Pulis explains how the deal came about. "We played in pre-season and I think it started from there, as I heard soon afterwards that Southampton had made enquiries. "I was interested straight away, and I think that my style of play suits the style that Jan Poortvliet is trying to adopt down here. I knew it was a great club and it should be in the Premiership, but fans might have to be a bit patient while the young team gels together. "They've already made a great start to the season though and I'm really looking forward to getting involved." After a decent performance at St. Mary's caught a few people's eyes, Pulis suffered an injury in training that he feared might put the whole move in jeopardy. "I had a collision in training after putting in a tackle and my studs stuck in the ground. It twisted my right foot and I had a scan, which showed that my fifth metatarsal bone was broken. "These things happen in football, but it's disappointing to have to start life at a new Club with an injury. It's frustrating, but everyone at Saints has been fantastic about it and hopefully I will be back in no time." "My first task now is to get fit, and then try and get into the team. I had a good pre-season and 5 or 6 weeks of training before the injury happened, so that will give me a bit of a head start when it comes to making a quick recovery." Having met with head coach Jan Poortvliet during the past week, Pulis was impressed by the Dutchman's outlook on the game and his approach to life in general. "Jan was great. He was very laid back and told me all about the way he likes to play. He really sold the club to me and I'm looking forward to starting training." When asked to describe his own footballing philosophy, Pulis answers with a mixture of modesty and honesty, that speak volumes about his own character traits. "I like playing in the centre of midfield," he explains, "and I can put in a shift. I can play off either foot and I like to keep the ball down and pass it around. I don't mind putting a foot in when it's needed either. I could do with scoring a few more goals though I must admit!" Although he has represented Wales at Under-21 level, Pulis is moving back to familiar territory having spent much of his childhood in Dorset. "I grew up in and around Bournemouth from the age of about 3 or 4," he explained, "so it's nice to be coming back to an area I know well." Aged just 20, he made the move to Stoke City in 2004, where he found himself in a somewhat unusual situation. "At my previous club it was never an issue, because I was a school boy and my Dad was picking the first team, but at Stoke it was a little different. "It was difficult at first, but I proved myself on the pitch and I'm looking forward to doing the same at a new club now." Stoke City's success and eventual promotion last season came as a surprise to many fans, but as Pulis explains, a little team work can go a long way. "Stoke have done brilliantly," he said. "I think if you said to anyone last year that they'd be in the Premiership then they would have said you were mad. Hopefully they will be able to stay up, but it won't be easy. "They are assembling a team that won't be easy to play against, and some of the bigger teams certainly won't be looking forward to visiting the Britannia. "Part of that success was a fantastic sense of team spirit, with everyone pulling in the same direction. From what I've heard, there is the beginnings of something similar at Southampton, with a lot of players around the same age, who all grew up together. "Hopefully we can use that to our advantage and follow Stoke up into the Premier League." Edited 31 March, 2009 by trousers

david in sweden Posted 31 March, 2009 Share Posted 31 March, 2009 Pulis was the make weight in the Andrew Davies deal where we got a £1m plus a big wedge off the wage bill. TO BE FAIR ... most of these players were /are on short term loans. Yes - Pulis has a contract beyond the end of the season, but came on a free. Recovering from injuries takes time; it did for Matt Oakley, before he moved. Forecast was 3rd reserve keeper with a Prem. club (whose name I can't bring myself to say) and a good prospect. Pekhart and Robertson were on 3 month loans, and gone already. Molyneux was reserve team player at Everton despite his young age, and will improve with time. Gasmi (known to the coaches) is only here till May and came with a recovering injury - but with the limited number of Reserve games only a few of them had a real " run-out ", - especially when trying to bring on Academy players at the same time. There is a world of difference between being a Reserve / Academy Player and even being sub. for a struggling CCC side in this league. Despite everything, an incredible number of young players have shown up well this " very difficult season " especially when they would have been glad to get a place on the bench a year ago. James, Thomson, Lallana, and Gillett have all shown some consistancy and both Surman and McGoldrick (despite his critics) have had a full season so far and are both among the leading scorers. Whereas, Schneiderlin would have more admirers had he scored a few goals, (sadly Holmes was injured before he got going, as was Jamie White ) but even McLaggon and Paterson showed great promise and scored valuable goals when called upon as subs. Looking at the potential of these lads, and with fresh memories of Walcott, and Bale's success , I think we have the foundation of a good side - provided we don't go down ! With our grave financial situation, I think we've done the best we can - all things considered - and could be a bit more fair with less criticism of the younger players ... and keep bitter comments ...for members of the Board. Gasmi i have seen once or twice and both times i was underwhelmed, but how can you really judge in 2 cameo appearances? GH probaly had the worst record of signings, WGS hardly better, HR ? Lets B Avenue Posted 31 March, 2009 Share Posted 31 March, 2009 Sorry to disagree, David, but the signings this season (Size excepted) have been utter toilet and the person/persons responsible should quit football totally. The standard of our "squad" is so poor, that people on here are rightly gutted that Gillett, who in any other season wouldn't have got near the bench let alone play regularly, is out for the season. The fact that we are not below Charlton, is down to the 3 game blip, where we actually created some chances and took them and before that, due to Kelvin Davis winning us a few draws with inspired displays. Last night's was reasonable but the one we turned out against Reading was lamentable. We had to sign some really iffy players to be able to field a reserve side, must be some football league rule or other I suppose. Pulis just hasn't worked out I guess. On an aside note I predict (via my 2009 sports almanac obtained during a day trip to the future) that Gasmi will score from a 28 yd free kick this very Saturday afty, not a vital goal though because we were already 3 -O up. Never ever sign an injured player, no matter how good he is or was you need to wait and see what happens when he tries to get back into the game. If the sale of goods act was applicable to Davies he'd have been back here long ago,it's just one injury after another with him. He may get over them all and become a decent player but now it's a 2 million jab in the ass for Stoke. We just have Pulis to be "triste" about.
