Consortium Watch!

On reading this suggestion yesterday I posted a possible identity for this mysterious consortium as the Reuben brothers.Pretty sure their name had come up on one of the -many- takeover threads.

Aye.....they are acquaintances of Sundance, ooops, sorry, Lord Marland of Odstock....who happens to be on the board of WH Ireland...

Are all the "ITKs" on this thread going to look pathetic again, much like they have for the past 3 years?

If they do look pathetic, we'll all be looking for another club to support, The 'Saints' Forum probably won't even be here for people to have a go at them...

Well that was what I was told after Saturday's game, they are in together.

This is where I read about them being in competition with each other. Perhaps they've since joined forces?

Former managers Souness and Merrington battle to take control of Southampton

Graeme Souness is ready to step in and save his old club Southampton from going out of business in a £15million deal. Souness is part of a consortium bidding to take control after the Championship strugglers' parent company, Southampton Leisure Holdings, went into administration last week.

Saints have debts of nearly £30m but despite this Souness will face competition from another former Southampton manager, Dave Merrington, who is part of a rival consortium.

....and he seems to be chums with a certain bank beginning with 'B'.....

The press consensus was that “Ratcliffe of Runcorn should be sent packing”, but he managed to extract £50m. Governments are not the only agencies prepared to back Ineos, says the Daily Mail. “It seems to have had no difficulty persuading Barclays Capital, Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley to underwrite its £5bn cash offer [for BP].”

Hmmm.....

Trouble is, I don't think Ratcliffe's interested in football.

With his money he could have taken over or at least invested in Saints anytime in the last few years.

Frankly, he's probably got more sense than to "invest" in football.

As there are alledgedly 19 interseted parties (inevitdably including the tirekickers with or without Barry Briefcase) should we not have an rumour 'list' below that we can scrub the also rans from or use to run a sweepstake? ;-)

OK so todate with odds?

1. Salz/Crouch - probably favourites Evens?

2. Gavyn Davies - ? Suspect in with one of the others? 5-1

3. Fulthrope/Merrington - funds? 3-1

4. Souness? not sure of backer as his previous guy went to Wolves 8-1

5. Heineken Lady? - Dutch Royal family as friends, is that what is know as 'Total fantasy'? 1000-1

6. Iranian/Isreali Brothers? Really - would this not be worse that Lowe/Crouch in terms of potential hostilities? ;-) 20-1

7. Richard Branson - now putting money into Brawn GP - 50-1

8. Paul Allen - naturrally the only choice for SFC! 1000-1

so if its 19 who are the others?

NB. All odds to increase exponentially if LifeLongSaint is involved. ;-)

Gavyn Davies is not involved in any bid.

Reported on Skysports news earlier, that the administrators said that they have now received over 30 enquiries for Saints.

Haven't we reached a point here whereby having too many suitors could actually delay the process long enough for us to miss a deadline? Or indeed the administrator could inadvertantly miss the best deal by not being able to see the wood for the trees and/or wheat for the chaff?

Slightly concerned of Hampshire.

To be honest, I think most of the 'suitors' just wanted a free corporate day last Saturday.

Tyre-kicking convention. They were probably all schooled by our favourite photocopier salesman.

Cumbria is the product of Local Government re-organisation; previously it was the counties of Cumberland and Westmorland, with Barrow-in-Furness and the Walney peninsula being in 'God's own' Lancashire.

Also, from the ever reliable Wikipedia ( area in km/sq ):

1 North Yorkshire 8,038

2 Cumbria 6,768

3 Devon 6,564

4 Lincolnshire 5,921

5 Norfolk 5,371

6 Northumberland 5,013

7 Suffolk 3,801

8 Hampshire 3,679

So to my reckoning, Hants is the biggest in England. All those listed above are north of Watford Gap or west of Dorset. Surely ineligible!

I very much hope there is a bidder out there who can inject suitable funds and stability into our club.

However let's not get too carried away with the financial 'worth' of any consortium.

QPR have, apparently, the wealthiest backers of all and yet they have not achieved a great deal on the pitch.

Suggest we ought to rein in our collective expectations if, and when, new owners are known.

However, at the moment I suppose, anything is going to be better than the current situation.

still not one consortium gone public nor a single decent rumour....strange??

Au contraire on the rumour front...

The rather exotic Dutch lady whose father owned a brewery (the kind of lady I had in actual fact hoped to meet myself one day ;)).

Rocking Rod + WGS, which takes care of the pre game entertainment then. Every game will be like the Superbowl. As a personal opinion I might add David Beckham to this crew, feeling fairly sure Rod would have been having kickabouts with old golden balls over in LaLa land and Becks did mention us as a potential takeover target.

Then there is the jewish brothers from Iraq who moved to Iran (talk about out of the frying pan for a pair of jews!) before hot footing it to London to make their fortune.

Even that nice Mr Souness is apparently keen to grace us with his presence once again, and he actually knows something about football (which is admittedly an unlikely qualification for a Saints owner).

So there you have it, a veritable potpourri of highly credible rumours indicating the high powered negotiations that must surely be taking place behind closed doors even as I type....

Updated odds?

1. The Tchenguiz Brothers? They have the funds but the credit crunch has exposed them to hugh loses. Are they right for Saints? Who knows? - 3-1

2. Tom Scott - Has links to Askham & Richards? 4-1

3. Salz/Crouch - A rival bidder might just beat them to the final post. 5-1

4. Souness? Has yet to issue any denial - 10-1

5. Fulthrope/Merrington - Will Asturius finally be able to produce the funds? Unlikely? 25-1

6. Gavyn Davies - Has publically stated that he's not involved with any bid - 25-1

7. Heineken Lady? - Dutch Royal family as friends, is that what is know as 'Total fantasy'? 1000-1

8. Richard Branson - now putting money into Brawn GP - 50-1

9. Paul Allen - naturrally the only choice for SFC! 1000-1

10. Aliens from Mars - 150000-1

11. LifeLongSaint - 500000-1

One of the possible interested parties might be the fella currently at Birmingham - David Gold - I think. I remember when we had the last wave of take overs that he was selling up his shares at Birmingham and looking to reinvest in another club. They interviewed him on 5Live and he even mentioned wanting to buy a southern club.

Maybe the circumstances have long changed for this one as I think the sale of Birmingham fell through didn't it? However, he may still have been interested enough to make an enquiry.

Souness was originally in a consortium with Brian Kennedy (owner of Weatherseal) and his brother Sean. I have mutual mates of Brian and Sean and would have heard if they were up for it. If Souness is serious I would be very suprised if kennedy was involved. He's invested very heavily in the States in an aquisition that Sean has been running so i doubt if he has the liquididity or the will.

I don't know who would be backing Souness this time round.

Think you mean David Sullivan, the other sordid little man at Brum. There was talk of him trying to get involved in West Ham or someone a while back - he's an Essex boy I think. The fraud police are still sniffing around Birmingham so not sure he'd be able to make a move, or right for us (oh for a rich, hard-working chairman who doesn't (want to) get his face in the paper every other day!).

Think you have to include some combination of ex-Spurs players in that list somewhere, Vega has been supposed to be sniffing around down the road, not sure if it's a FIRM bid (Vega is the name of the Syrian patent busting Viagra BTW)

Someone mentioned Paul Miller in an earlier thread, and my mate in the Chapel End reckons he saw Ardilles (although as hmy mate was on Britannia Road in his taxi at the time how he ever spotted him amongst the bollards I'll never know...)

Would Radio Solent let him have time off from his radio broadcasts though? ;-)
