Fan Categories ?

A lot has been written on here about absentee supporters being part of the reason for our financial freefall in the last year or so but if you consider reality perhaps it is not really so unexpected !

I reckon that there are 4 main fan categories which apply and which most clubs outside the elite would expect to exist :

A) DIEHARDS - those who follow home and away without fail !

B) REGULARS - those who follow at home and occasionally away !

C) CASUALS - those who pick and choose depending upon situation/performance !

D) GLORY BOYS - those who come when we are playing important games or top teams !

The new owners have to take account of this and gear everything towards matching the team to the league ! Early results next season are vital (especially at minus 10 points) so if we can attract a fair number of cat C and maybe even cat D then we will move forward but if we fail to recognise that supporters cannot be fobbed off with con tricks (last year's reserves = total football etc..) then I guess we could be looking at longterm stagnation !!!

I go mainly when I am able. Last season as said previously I missed some because of Lowe and the goings on at the club.

Next season ideally, I will buy a season ticket for the first time in a while. Though I am still likely to miss the odd game.

At the end of the day one scare like this is more than enough.

Not that black and white IMO.

I personally have only been to about 20 games over the last 2 years, but I've spent most of that time living in Scottland, Germany, The Netherlands and Phoenix. DOes that make me a glory boy?

I think there a lot of factors to put in place, including geography, wealth and boardroom politics.

Hit it on the nail. Though to be fair a few might have made more effort if we hadn't had the "Dutch Experiment" last season.

Urghh. How about those who support the CLUB but not the SHAREHOLDERS?BOARD.

Put me down for that as a Lowe-boycotter. At least we got rid of him.

There used to be a time when we kicked six bells out of the away supporters to vent our frustrations. Now all we can do is blame the board (did anyone know who the board was in Ted Bates days?). Trouble is they don't fight back so we stop going to games (that'll show 'em eh?). Then totally unconnected events sees a change in ownership and hey presto the 'we got rid of him cries' come out.

You couldn't make it up could you.

So, did the fans cause administration and getting rid of Rupert or didn't they?

I imagine that if this secret theory becomes available to the world of football it could revolutionise the whole game.

Did you think this up by yourself, or were some other playground friends involved ?

It's a pity that the previous board didn't get it, nor many of the posters on here who seem to blame the supporters for our demise !!

I've gone from A to C and i can't see me going back to A due to the fact following Saints home and away costs too much and is no longer something i've got the time or energy to do anymore.

You make it sound all so simple.

I'm an "A", always ahve always will be.

Unfortunately because I need to pay the bills my job means working Saturdays so I cant attend as much as I would like.

However, I "follow home and away without fail" - always have, always will - either on the phone, internet or radio, or tv. My work during games is shoddy!!

A Fan in my opinion is ANYONE who loves the club. You cannot catagorise them, other than optimists, pesimists, ****s, hooligans, students(of everythig SFC), opinionated, etc. etc.

I know "fans" who go every week but know SFA about players, about the goings on, does this mean that they are not fans?!!

There are also people who dont go who "know everything" because they live, eat,and sleep Saints.

Who is the better fan???? A, B, C, or D Eurosaint???

Way too simplistic

So you are a dead set A. Home and away, why, in the old days even Europe.

Then you get married and get the shackles put on and there is DIY to do at the weekend so only make a few away and become a B.

Then you get Kids and the wife's income has gone and suddenly you struggle to pay the mortgage let alone the cost of getting to a game, so you become a C

Then your job takes you away, it's a 400 mile round trip or more, so you become a D.

Does that mean you are no longer worthy? What about those thousands of miles and the wind rain and snow of your earlier younger days? Does sitting in the bitter cold and driving snow at The Stadium of Light or Oldham away no longer count?

Then maybe, just maybe you become a DINKy, you have to choose between gardening and football every weekend and you find that you have the time and the money to start to move back up the scale again....

The only way to differentiate fans is whether, when you are cut open you bleed Red & White stripes or if you bend your work day/travel/family in order to simply get the latest news, latest gossip, or latest score, OR if you just look for the results.

Where you change your entire family holiday touring somewhere like France to find that internet cafe so you can find out the result, or you just wait to try and find an old copy of an English paper in the pile at the back of the Pub in whichever resort you are in.

That was not the point of the thread at all ! I was trying to stimulate debate on the notion (held by some) that stayaway supporters are responsible for our demise !

My view is that different categories exist in any case and that only success on the pitch brings in the non diehard/regulars !

I do agree that I put it in a very simplistic way and that many other circumstances intervene to change things !

Anyway this was only a little distraction before the real business this week of new takeover threads - bring them on.............

Great post. I'm a B but turning into C as I'm newly married and to be honest I can't justify peeing that much money up the wall next season as I have the last few years when the team/boardroom aren't putting anything in. Saints now have to earn their keep like the other leisure expenditures in my life. Earning their keep means I want to see 100% effort from players and boardroom, I've never had huge expectations on results but I do expect and grew up with a club that cared. Unfortunately, the club decided to treat us as "customers" in the good times and wanted us to become diehards when the going got tough without committing to any change themselves. Sorry, life doesn't work like that.

I used to live 3 hours away, and fitted neatly into the C, catching 8 games a season.

Now I live more than a day away, and therefore must be E > wishes they could go, but its impossible!!!

However, I look forward to what the fixture list holds in January, as I intend to catch a couple of games then (home & away).

Strikes me recently that Norwich already supposedly have 19K season tickets - will they pull almost 25,000 weekly in League 1? If that happens, that would be awesome for them. I'd be happy if we managed to get 18,000 for a single game!!! COME ON ENGLAND RESIDENTS, SUPPORT THE BOYS (no.......) MEN!!!
