SaintRobbie Posted 9 July, 2009 Share Posted 9 July, 2009 Sorry, I know there's a thread on the story of KD signing for Saints on a 3 year deal today but I thought it was right to start a new one, given the fact we're all now wondering what the next piece of good news is going to be and may forget this... but, Kelvin Davis today parked a good contract and £s to stay loyal to Southampton FC in League 1. That doesnt happen much in football these days and I think it is the most significant moment of a historic day. I know he'll play more often and may be captain more here than in Premiership West Ham. But, it is a statement worthy of real praise. We witnessed real loyalty today. What a Saint! A player genuinely proud to wear the shirt. I am proud of one of our players for the first time in a long time. Genuinely proud. Kelvin Davis. Saints legend in the making. Anyone else agree? Patrick Bateman Posted 9 July, 2009 Share Posted 9 July, 2009 I agree. He started off very shaky and took some really bad stick, but, he showed strength of character to get through it and become (easily) our best player last season. And a top bloke as well! Mr Nice Posted 9 July, 2009 Share Posted 9 July, 2009 "loyal" where does that come into it ? He chose less commuting and actually getting a game rather than sitting on his arse all season. He earned his corn in the final year of his four year contract and was utter gash for the first three.

Smirking_Saint Posted 9 July, 2009 Share Posted 9 July, 2009 I agree too, he slowly won us over and i will agree i at first gave him some stick, but TBF he was flaky !!! But he has came on leaps and bounds and has won me over, as well as many more of our fans. A true footballing gent and yeah, a could be legend in the making. Cheers super Kelv

I disagree ... and as he has only been at the club for 3 years & not 4 as you claim, I would resprectfully suggest that you do not know what you are talking about. Yup, 3 seasons. Has to be said, he was pretty shaky in the first season and he did cost us points with some real blunders, but he has improved the longer he has been with us. If we can get a big commanding centre-half to make up for Davis' tendency not to command his penalty area we'll be looking a lot stronger.
waterlooville saint Posted 10 July, 2009 Share Posted 10 July, 2009 Glad to find this thread here, as I think it's really good news that KD has turned down an opportunity to earn good money warming the bench to stay with us and play. I'm sure there are lots of reasons, but we should be celebrating this as good news ... all part of a really good week after what's frankly been a disaster of a year so far (especially as I not only live in a Pompey area but my wife and step family are all die hard pompey fans). Yeah know what you mean we are surrounded by them and at times its been like the indians circling the wagons, but now things will start to go our way and our fishy friends will have less to shout about, my sons team plays in the port*mouth local league and i know how warmly they greet a saints shirt over there!! alki_in_korea Posted 10 July, 2009 Share Posted 10 July, 2009 Got a lot of time for him. He may have started a little slow here but didn't let it get to him n has now shown not just what a great keeper he is but what a great bloke he is too. True saint Kelvin.Thank you
Iowsaintsfan Posted 10 July, 2009 Share Posted 10 July, 2009 Great to see loyalty, there are alot of players up and down the country that could do with taking a leaf out of KD book, if you are happy where you are and playing well - why go somewhere just for a few extra quid? Surely it must be better to make yourself a local icon / hero / legend? Well done KD, you have come on such along way from that awful day at Sheffield Wed

Nice comments and providing we can get a good defence in front of him, he should easily be the best keeper in this league. After all he's been at the club almost as long as some of the Academy lads at the club..his experience will be invaluable.
The9 Posted 10 July, 2009 Share Posted 10 July, 2009 I just don't see where loyalty comes into it. We have no idea if Saints matched his West Ham offer or not, and playing and not having to change location is going to beat bench-sitting hands down if the money is the same. If it turns out he's getting paid far less than West Ham offered, fair play.

He earned his corn in the final year of his four year contract and was utter gash for the first three. according to your logic, he would be happier sitting on the bench (at a very much higher salary) every week waiting for Robert Green to get injured . Of course he made a personal decision but there are many others who would have plumped for the Premiership team first, and topped up their bank accounts every month. Whatever " loyalty " means i this day and age, I think KD has more of it than many others who've already left the club.

Wes Tender Posted 10 July, 2009 Share Posted 10 July, 2009 I wonder if Surman is kicking himself yet? Probably not at this moment. He might do so when Wolves are relegated and we are promoted, especially if he spends a lot of next season warming the bench. In the meantime, he can reflect on what a crappy environment Wolverhampton is compared to down here if he lives there, or else how tiring it is commuting down here to see family and friends. TRUE, but I wonder ..did he jump or was he pushed ?..at that time we didn't have funds for the June salaries !

I think you mean, 'did he jump or was he nudged?', as he could not have been pushed if he really did not want to go. However, good luck to Drew and, more importantly, well done Kelvin and thank you! As pointed out, your logic suggests that he would go to WH and take the money. Instead he spoke to his family, considered how much he likes Saints and took what is probably a lot less pay. Good on you Kelvin!

a1ex2001 Posted 10 July, 2009 Share Posted 10 July, 2009 Never thought I'd see the day we were celebrating Kelvin signing a new contract after the game at Sheffield Wednesday the season before last. A remarkable turnaround and while i'm sure he's still earning plenty more than most of us I have to respect him for turning down big bucks to sit on the bench in favour of first team football and keeping his family settled.
