How many points we will have by 1st Sept?

There are 5 LG1 matches up to 31 Aug, so 15 points available but only 2 are home games. The squad is weaker than it was last year, and unless Rasiak fails to find a club, the ability to score goals looks woefully weak. Assuming there will be some signings, they will still be settling in during August, having had no pre-season with us.

It looks very unlikely that the -10 will have been cleared by 1st Sept and my prediction is that we might make it to -5. If so, thats not play-off form, and if its less, it will be relegation form.

I'm usually optimistic every August, but not this year. Boyed up by the club being saved from extinction, an 'easier' league to play-in, the financial situation turned round, all should make for a hopeful start, but instead I'm very pessimistic. Can anyone cheer me up or do others feel the same?

The squad may be weaker but we are in League 1 not the CCC

But there is no reason why the squad with a couple of new players cannot perform well

We will be on 0 exactly after three wins, a draw and a loss.

Saga will be gone, Rasiak will still be here but is on fire as he tries to play for a move. Patterson and Lallana perform admirably and Thomas has a new lease of life alongside Murty. Spiderman starts to show his class (at last) and we do rather well.

Compared to this time last season when we knew that Pearson had gone, Lowe and the Quisling ruled the roost, we had two Dutch minnows in charge and would be playing the kids, I am ecstatic at the transformation of our fortunes this season.

I am happy that we have a new manager experienced at this level and above, successful in achieving promotions. We still have the remnants of a decent team at this level and just need some fine tuning and some strength in depth to make it viable. We have managed to keep the best goalkeeper in the division by far, against all expectations. Most would have predicted that Lallana would have gone too. Murty and Harding will strengthen the defence and other players introduced too early last season are developing into decent prospects.

We are no longer in the position we had as paupers whereby we could not afford to either buy or keep the best players. We will buy sensibly, but secure in the knowledge that if we really want to buy or keep a player, money is no object within reason. If players like John, Rasiak and Saganowski choose to go elsewhere, they can be replaced by either better players nearing the end of their careers (as they are) from divions above, or the best young prospects from within this division.

What's not to feel positive about?

A good thread in order to gauge fans' opinions, or at least confidence before a ball has been kicked. Personally, I would like to wait for a few games in order to let the dust settle. Even going into September, I don't think I would be able to tell if we were promotion, relegation or also rans. Come October, we should be able to judge the manager and the squad a bit more realistically. I will be there, shouting encouragement and wanting us to win every game. But, we ain't gonna win every game, so, I just want us to battle, try hard and move forward. let's get our feet again, having been knocked out last season. Let's not go in throwing everything at it, but posturing, forming and building a decent playing squad, that is well drilled and organised. If we do that, we will do ok, how well we do will be down to confidence, consistency and luck (plus a lot of effort and heart of course).

On the back of that, Prof, can you let us know what the Times replied after this quote from the beginning of last season, because you were right, we didn't finish 20th! 23rd, IMO, wasn;t great though, and maybe The Times didn't see the bigger picture of the failings of this club, but they were obviously optimistic in our position!

Prof quote -

"The Times today (4th Aug 200 predicts that Saints will be in 20th position at the end of the season. This just goes to show how little real attention the London journalists give to the detail of changes at this and at other clubs. Easier just to predict that the relegated teams will be at the top, despite the evidence of recent years. I've filed the page, and look forward to writing to them next April!"

I'm kinda with you on all of that. I wish at this point in time we could say for certain that Murty will be with us though.

I personal think we are in for a very long and hard season. Maybe the same as last year if we have not got a striker (pair) and still NOT learnt from last year silly mistake from loaning out striker. This year selling or releasing goal getter. Hope Im wrong -8

very hard to say.

The first 11, with Rasiak instead of John, would do ok in CCC if properly managed.

No idea what our first 11 will be come end of August.

Don't really know what the standard of League 1 will be.

in short, not got a clue.

-7 after three boring draws where we hang on for grim life.

How on earth do some on here think any different? It takes a long time for any team to gel and footballers - well hardly the quickest learners are they?

With Laziak up front we'll hardly be a threat - saw him at Bomo where he was an utter disgrace and unless we get some experienced strong men in like a Marsden or Howard(N'ton,Leicster, Derby) we will just be bullied out of most games playing kids.

Don't delude yourselves. It will be another long hard season. Just check the bookies!!
