dubai_phil Posted 10 August, 2009 Share Posted 10 August, 2009 Was thinking similar just now. It has been a REALLY long time since we signed a player who was PROVEN at our level and who would be rated as one of the better players to target. Often in the past signings have been potential, many have come off, but signing the leading scorer in the League in which we are competing. Hell yes it's only L1, but compare that to the PL and it is like siging last seasons' top scorer. Very impressive, sure not a KK signing but very impressive. They must have a plan. Wow
Under Weststand Posted 10 August, 2009 Share Posted 10 August, 2009 Kevin Keegan I Don't think any transfer will ever compare with that one. But having been through the last 5-years it does have that sort of feel good factor & a definite statement of intent can't stop :smt040 all day. NickG Posted 10 August, 2009 Share Posted 10 August, 2009 For where we are, at the time of signing, would struggle to beat it. I would suggest every team in division would want to have signed him - when have we been able to say that?

KMondo Posted 10 August, 2009 Share Posted 10 August, 2009 Lee Holmes. Derby were desperate to keep him apparently, but the young hot-shot was lured to Saints by the promise of a revolutionary coaching set-up.
S-Clarke Posted 10 August, 2009 Share Posted 10 August, 2009 It's not really been ''saints style'' to make big signings in the past few years, last one was probably Skacel - but that was so drawn out that when it finally did happen, it was a bit of a let down. Lambert is different - best player in this division and we moved for him within a couple of days, no fannying around for weeks. Shows we mean serious business. And of course John Sydenham followed by Tommy Jenkins who was a "wow" signing for me as though he was a bit inconsistent when he was good he was brilliant. Highamsaint Posted 10 August, 2009 Share Posted 10 August, 2009 The signing of Lambert shows that finally we are being taken seriously as a club again. As you say, when he was good he was unbelievable wasn't he....used to dribble past the entire opposition but always gave the impression that he didn't know what the end product was going to be. When it did come off, it was unbelievable. I seem to remember a game against Everton. I think we were 2-0 down and we ended up winning 3-2. I'm pretty sure that was his best game when everything came together. Ah,memories eh!

Arizona Posted 10 August, 2009 Share Posted 10 August, 2009 Completely agree. Pace, tricks, balance & goals. Sorry, er... we're talking about Lee Holmes yeah? :-s Thinking back to recent high profile signings (Schneiderlin, Saga, Skacel, BWP, Phillips) they've all suffered from their own hype. Not their fault admittedly, but I think people tend to get on their backs quicker when they don't reach expectations, even if they have done a reasonable enough job. I just hope we show Lambert a bit more patience.
Thedelldays Posted 10 August, 2009 Share Posted 10 August, 2009 biggest one for you recently then, if not Lambert? recently..i was laughing since the re-signing of davies...which was some time ago and we were in the premiership.. Rasiak was a big signing signing..the resigning of kelvin davies... yes this is big...but this is what I sort of expected by saints... League 1 is crap, lets be honest...with the facilities, resources we have and yes, the money, I would like to think we would be doing nothing else but go after one or two of the leagues best players. have been saying it all along, but I was called unrealistic and we should take our time and consolidate. signings like this to smell of consolidation to me

converted_saint Posted 10 August, 2009 Share Posted 10 August, 2009 lol this is the BIGGEST over reacting post to be fair... I'm not saying Kelv's necessarily been a "big name signing" in the great scheme of things, but I'd be worried about the goalkeeping situation were he not here. I certainly think he's been perhaps the most important signing (maybe with the exception of Lambert). Thing is with Kelv, I genuinely think we've got a PL quality 'keeper in League One which is huge

jasonbenali Posted 10 August, 2009 Share Posted 10 August, 2009 Biggest in the Prem was Phillips. In the fizzy, hate to say it, but it was Skacel. Surely you haven't forgotten the hype that accompanied his signing? Personally, was pretty pleased with Rasiak at the time and even Euell - I'm still staggered by just how clumsy a footballer Jason Euell is. In our current position, signing the League's top scorer is an ambitious and impressive signing and gets my 'wow' vote.

Tbh, i think you need to realise that we're in League One on -9 and realistically are going to struggle to get ourselves promoted this season so this season is going to be a little bit about consolidation. But signing him on a 3 year contract sends a message...2 yrs in L1 and a year in the CCC...then Prem beckons!
rallyboy Posted 10 August, 2009 Share Posted 10 August, 2009 I thought Millwall were poor and the quality gulf between Prem and Lg One looks huge. But....we have just signed the best goalscorer in the division and for that reason I think it's a great signing. Crap defences beware, Saints are coming to town (with our own crap defence, but hopefully the ball will be in your box most of the time) I haven't been this excited about a new player since Skacel signed......
