Saints 2009/10 would comfortably beat Saints 2008/09

Can picture it- Lambert bullying Lancashire and Perry; Waigo scaring the living daylights out of Rudi; Gillett can't get in the side;Jaidi and Trottman outmuscling the battering-ram Euell. The sheer work-ethic and willingness of Harding giving no space to the likes of DMG; perhaps slightly vulnerable to the pace of BWP but unlikely to stay onside; 2009/10 Lallana looking pound for pound better than 2008/09 Lallana; midfield a slightly more contested area, though no reason why Hammond wouldn't give a Surman a run for his money. And if it came to chasing goal, the likes of Connolly on the bench compared to a loaned out/depleted strikeforce and young great hopes like Peckart. Of course, we would still have Kelv to beat :)

-------- Davis

James Perry Size Skacel

------- Gillett

Schneiderlin - Surman

------- Lallana

----- McG - Euell

vs

Davis

Murty - Jaidi - Trottman - Harding

------ Hammond - James

Waigo ---- Lallana ----- Mellis

Surman is the only player who'd get into the new side IMO.

Interesting thread

What about comparing current side v the Burley play off side and 1st year championship team

Have to say it is a good feeling at the moment but we have to be careful not to big up the current side too much until it starts performing consistently

Absolutely agree.

Im not getting too carried away just yet. I remember these threads poped up when we went on a 5 match winning streak in our playoff season ''We are better than our relegated premiership side..'' etc.

Still a long way to go before this lot can be compared to any past team!

I'd have Skacel in for Mellis, but that's just my opinion. Otherwise I'd agree. EVERYTHING about this team and even this club is miles better than last season.

The Burley side was a lot better, maybe next season with a few more players we might be at a similar level but not yet.

Davis

Wright - Baird - Lundekvam - Bale

Surman - Guthrie - Pele - Skacel

Jones - Rasiak

That was a decent team. From our current squad Waigo and Murty would walk into the side not sure who else maybe Lallana, Hammond and Jaidi.

Ahem, I see you mean the Burley/SNODIN side, rather than the appalling team from Burley's last season. Current team would beat the Burley "lardy boys" side from the following season.

Morgan was fantastic against rovers and apparently very good against Southend. He is in great form at the mo

He didn't play holding midfield against Southend. I'd say he was as good as anyone on the night playing as our furthest forward central midfielder.

He's not cut out to play holding midfield yet, maybe with a bit of experience but not yet.

Wether he's in the team or not it's a nice change to actually have options and decent players on the bench.

I've managed to blank that season out, not sure I could even remember a full XI. That was a shocking season.

we lost to rovers but beat Southend with Wotten in the side

my point is that to get out of this division we need the right TEAM structure NOT just the best players

We lost to rovers as we had no left hand side. Hammond and Morgan were both fantastic that night. We were crap down the wings

Would you have any of these players in the team now to replace existing players? If so, who?

Surman

McGoldrick

Skacel

BWP

Euell

Dyer

Rasiak

JPS

Stern John

I certainly wouldn't have any of those strikers instead of Lambert bearing in mind age, attitude and scoring rate this league. Skacel likewise, either at LB or LW. Surman is a tricky one, because I think he's a quality player, but Lallana is better in attack and Hammond/Schneiderlin looks a good partnership in front of DM. I'd have Papa over Dyer, McGoldrick or Euell any day too, so I think we are looking stronger.

Also, this year's Schneiderlin would definitely outplay last year's Schneiderlin. A vast improvement imo.

If it was just based on ability i'd take Skacel and Mcgoldrick back but neither of those really wanted to be here so we're better off with inferior players who want to play for us.

Shame we lost Euell as I think he could be usefull cover this season same with JPS, good player but not as good as Trottman or Jaidi imo.

Surman I'd take back in an instant, a front three of Lallana, Paga and Surman would be brilliant.

Glad to see BWP, Rasiak, Dyer gone.
