Legod Third Coming Posted 7 November, 2009 Share Posted 7 November, 2009 We thought is was moving from 4-5-1 to 4-4-2 that meant we were 'rescuing' games. Perhaps the formation is neither here nor there, after last night. Perhaps we just come on strong late in games because that's how we are? Fitter maybe? Or we just take time to get going?? Anyone worked out how many goals we are actually scoing from 50mins +???
Thedelldays Posted 7 November, 2009 Share Posted 7 November, 2009 it does also help when our first 11 is usually better than theirs.. good team
VectisSaint Posted 7 November, 2009 Share Posted 7 November, 2009 Padrew is the king of half time team talks. Lets get him in then, he could Pardew
shurlock Posted 7 November, 2009 Share Posted 7 November, 2009 We looked totally different second half - thought that brizzle bossed the centre of midfield in the first half (admittedly without threatening), something which an extra man in the middle -Wotton etc- would have made difficult. I thought Hammond had one of his poorer games for us last night.
Thedelldays Posted 7 November, 2009 Share Posted 7 November, 2009 i really believe if pardew had a full pre season and had most of this team in place ready for the millwall game..we would have gone up in the top 2... I really believe that

Anyone worked out how many goals we are actually scoing from 50mins +??? Just after I've posted something to much the same effect in the post-match thread, here's this one. As far as I'm concerned, it's a matter of quality, pure and simple (TDD makes much the same observation in this thread I see). Formation is less important; we've dominated matches whichever we've played because we're better than our opponents. Sometimes it takes a while for that quality to tell, as it did last night and against MK Dons; other times we score early and control the game (Southend being an example). Fitness must surely play a major part as well - I thought Pardew's comments about spending a lot of time working on Lambert's fitness were very telling. Lambert scored plenty last season, but Pardew still saw room for improvement. Now that's an attitude I like to see.

Thedelldays Posted 7 November, 2009 Share Posted 7 November, 2009 So now not having a full pre-season IS an excuse? no...I still maintain we should have done better in the first 10 games or so...alot better..
Saint Fan CaM Posted 7 November, 2009 Share Posted 7 November, 2009 Mmm, my thoughts are that AP needed to change BACK to 4-5-1 later in the game to protect the 3-1 lead and also not tinker with the defence. To be fair though we held out (as we should have expected to do) and perhaps there is something to be said for trying new ideas out.
St Marco Posted 7 November, 2009 Share Posted 7 November, 2009 no...I still maintain we should have done better in the first 10 games or so...alot better.. We had no Lambert,Harding,Mellis,Antonio,Waigo,Connolly,Hammond,Jaidi,Trotman etc..until the season had pretty much started. If i look at the first team from the first couple of games a few things stand out. Light weight and no pace. That team was always going to struggle. Hence why most of them no longer start or are used at all. Let's face it, the team now is probably the best Saints team since we were in the PL. We have strength, pace but more importantly many people who can contribute goals. If this team started the season things would be very different. Well the start of it would because they have already shown how good they are by winning 6 of their last 7 games.

I really believe that So do I, which is why I consider our poor start acceptable as it's taken longer than I hoped to get the players in place. It's also why I fully expect us to go up via the play offs which I've also been saying since August.

benjii Posted 7 November, 2009 Share Posted 7 November, 2009 The fact is, not only do we have better players we are also able to dominate most teams physically. We're still not the quickest team around but blimey, we must be one of the strongest. We are able to pin teams into their own half for long periods and therefore we will eventually score goals at this level whether we play 4-5-1 or 4-4-2 because those teams will crack and we have the quality to punish errors and take chances. The squad still needs a bit of strengthening overall IMO (could we sustain play-off form without one of Lambert, Hammond, Harding, Jaidi, Trottman for a while?) but Pardew has done an exceptional job in a very impressive manner. SNSUN Posted 7 November, 2009 Share Posted 7 November, 2009 If your players are better than the other teams players, formation rarely matters. Our squad could wee wee over all the others in this league - I'm looking forward to the Norwich and Leeds games with relish.

We beat Rovers without Trottman, we still have Perry and Thomas as backup for him and Jaidi maybe even Murty at a pinch. Hammond is probably irreplaceable but we do have some midfield cover and Connely seems to be a fair shout as a cover striker
barney Posted 7 November, 2009 Share Posted 7 November, 2009 I just think some people are reading too much into this. 3-0 up and cruising, antonio loses the ball in midfield bang 3-1. Dodgy penalty later 3-2. I think the points defecit added with the pinnacle debacle might be a bridge too far this season BUT for the first time in a long while the futures red+white.
