Robbie Fowler looking to end his career in England...CHDAJFU in this league?

Double page spread in today's Daily Mail ( http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1245126/In-Gods-country-Robbie-Fowler-wizard-Oz-lost-golden-touch.html )...aged 34....playing well in Australia...grown up - no longer a disruptive influence....probably at League One level now...could be the 'talisman' we're looking for? A hark back to the halcyon days of the 80s when we signed ex-england players in the twilights of their career...?

Connolly has never been on anywhere near the wages of Fowler, nor has Fowler ever played as low as this. I saw Connolly make his senior debut as a teenager and also saw him play regularly in league one in 1996/97 when he partnered Devon White (and Kevin Phillips) up front for Watford.

I don't think they were ever in the same class category, but if we have Connolly, why do we need a player who is two years older and going to cost us a lot in terms of wages? I was a big fan of Fowler back in the day, but he's not somebody I'd like to sign now. I watch football every day as part of my job and the standard of the Australian League is very poor. Don't be fooled by his recent goalscoring exploits, he's way past his best, but I am sure his wage demands would still be fairly high.

I remember when Fowler and Hasselbaink were playing for Cardiff at SMS a couple of years ago. They were just incredible to watch, it was amazing. I sat in awe at how two proffesional footballers could look so disinterested in a game of football. If the Championship didn't excite him, I don't think League 1 will either.

He really is playing well in Australia and will see out his contract until the end of next season, that is March 2011 up in Townsville.

By then we will be in the Championship. He will not be fit enough then I think. A great player, but out of England is where he needs to be to play his best football. Instead of criticise how rubbish he is now, the away and home fans there actually enjoy watching his natural talent instead of moaning about his lack of fitness and lesser killer instinct.

Scored 9 in 15 in Oz

North Queensland Fury

Fowler signed with the North Queensland Fury on 4 February 2009 and became their inaugural marquee player; with his family relocating to Townsville for the 2009-2010 season of the Australian A-League.[72] It was an important signing for the new franchise who struggled to sign a marquee player, while some questioned whether Fowler would be able to cope with the heat and humidity of North Queensland.[73]

Fowler made his debut in July 2009 in a 2–1 preseason loss against Wolverhampton Wanderers in Perth after recovering from groin and hip complaints.[74] Fowler has since been named North Queensland Fury's captain for the 2009/10 season and the first in the club's history. He scored his first A-League goal from a penalty kick in his club's first competitive match against Sydney FC on Saturday 8 August 2009. In rounds 4, 5, and 6 Fowler scored Solo's Hyundai A-League Goal of the Week.

nice goal in the vid

pay as you play and it'd be yes from me, but by the sounds of it and just by looking out the window, would he really want to?

No, no and more no.

Was a total washout at Cardiff 2 years ago, barely played for them as he was always injured and will only get more injured more often.

Plus blah blah property portfolio etc.

To be fair to Hasselbaink he at least scored a fair few goals there.

I thought Fowler looked decent in that game. He caused us a few problems but just didn't have the pace to hurt us.

The best striker in Australia by a mile is Archie Thompson. He's looking for a loan deal to further his wc2010 chances (the A-league ends here in Feb). HCDAJFU

Shane Smeltz has done it both for Wellington and GCU. Also how about a cheeky bid for Hernandez, or would he be too much of a luxury player? Agree about Archie, would also make an excellent foil for Lambert I would imagine

Or Paul Ifill, playing very well for the Wellington Phoenix and the main reason they are in the top half of the table.

I've only seen Ifill play once against Sydney in your 3-0 loss over here and he looked excellent although was chopped down by our thugs at every given opportunity. Although now gone to america I think, I've always thought Allsopp cdaj in the lower leagues due to his pace and strength, but doesn't have the footballing ability to take it higher then mid ccc.

I could play in the A league and score 9 in 15....

......if you were playing against the Perth Glory defence.

I must say I'm happy to see the A-League getting a run in Estonia as well.

As a new league you can't expect miracles. If Australia is going to be successful on the world stage we still need our best players playing in Europe. However the league is improving and it will expand to 11 teams next season and 12 the following season.

It pains me to say it but Dwight Yorke was terrific when he played for Sydney FC and he was subsequently snapped up by Sunderland in their promotion winning season.

Therefore it's not beyond the realms of possibility that a fit and rejuvenated Robbie Fowler could have a big impact if he returned to England.

I just don't think there's a place for him at Saints.
