sad saints fan Posted 2 February, 2010 Share Posted 2 February, 2010 Looking at tonight league one games ,we could drop 3 places tonight .But seeing who the games are I think that wins for Carlisle ,leyton Orient andWallsall are preferable to Colchester, Bristol Rovers and Charlton pulling further away. Matthew Le God Posted 2 February, 2010 Share Posted 2 February, 2010 (edited) Charlton are too far away already to be caught by Saints. I doubt Colchester will be caught either. Saints are basically going for the final playoff spot or possibly 5th. Edited 2 February, 2010 by Matthew Le God

I agree with you on Charlton but Colchester Swindon Huddersfield have roughly the same number of points at the moment and I would have thought we wanted them to lose
Dalek2003 Posted 2 February, 2010 Share Posted 2 February, 2010 We have to keep a gap between us and the bottom four. Promotion is not really a possibility this season but the JPT is and we should try and beat Pompey. As we put our efforts into the cups we need to avoid being sucked into a relegation battle. Matthew Le God Posted 2 February, 2010 Share Posted 2 February, 2010 I do think the playoffs are almost impossible now though, Why impossible? Saints can still in theory get 90 points. It will most likely take around 76 points to get 6th spot. The current Saints squad shouldn't really drop more than the 14 points in the next 19 games against the teams in League One. brmbrm Posted 2 February, 2010 Share Posted 2 February, 2010 Seriously, we want everyone in the top 8 to lose, except if they play each other when we want Leeds, Norwich to win, then Charlton and Colchester, then draws. (I dont think Charlton are uncatchable - their form is not so good recently, it could get worse). relegation! That dalek makes me PMSL!!!!! If we have clear water between us and thae bottom four we can enjoy the Cups without looking over our shoulder.

Let's be positive. We are 15 points behind 6th place (if Huddersfield win just one of there 2 games in hand) We are 50% (points wise) worse off than when we started the season. Only 7 points ahead of Oldham and the bottom 4! Shocking! Thankfully this season is just a practice and doesnt count.

Glasgow_Saint Posted 2 February, 2010 Share Posted 2 February, 2010 For all those that talk about our amazing form: Last 6 games 'current form' has us 13th in the form table, level with big spenders Brighton and behind L1 greats Leyton Orient, Carlisle and 10 other top sides. WATERSIDEIFASAINT Posted 2 February, 2010 Share Posted 2 February, 2010 I think it is very realistic with our current squad and home form to think we could at least win 8 out of our remaining 10 home games. You then look at our away fixtures Exeter,Wycombe,Tranmere,Brighton,Gillingham,Yeovil,Bristol Rovers and MK Dons are all very winable games.Norwich is the 1 real tough game.I could easily see us winning 6 out of the 9 games which would give us the 14 wins AP was saying we needed. Play offs difficult but not impossible imho

The Kraken Posted 2 February, 2010 Share Posted 2 February, 2010 Form means NOTHING in our case. We started on -10, took ages to get going and lost momentum in December/January. Our league season is over. It really isn't. This coming part of the season was always going to be hugely important, either for this campaign and/or next year. Unlike you I won't be giving up this season's promotion push until its mathematically impossible, but it is looking increasingly unlikely that it won't happen this year. However, from now until the end of the season is when the side really need to start finding their consistency, putting strings of consistently strong performances together and getting back that winning mentality. If we make the playoffs this year then great; but if not we need to finish the season as one of the top form teams of the division so that the summer is spent making small modifications to a winning team rather than wholesale changes. Then we can hit the next season running. So to that end, our form from here on in means everything. This season's expectations have divided opinion amongst many on here, but there is very little doubt that pretty much everyone (including Pardew, Cortese etc) views the initial goal of this project to get out of League 1 within two seasons. Not getting promoted in half that time is ibviously a bone of contention for some, but I for one am still looking at the bigger picture.

St Landrew Posted 3 February, 2010 Share Posted 3 February, 2010 For them to lose, someone else has to win, so ideally we want everyone else to draw and Saints to win. Normally, that is perfect reasoning, as a draw between rivals means 1 point is lost forever. However, if teams immediately above, are playing other teams who are out of sight, or are so low in the division as to be no immediate threat, then a loss to the immediate rival is the result to hope for. In a sense, Walsall 1-1 Charlton was the 2nd best result [a win for Walsall would have been the worst]; and Orient blasting Bristol Rovers 5-0 was also the 2nd best result, as they are both immediate rivals, and a draw would have been best. However, Rovers are now very much out of form, which makes a space for a team to fill, if they continue that way. Plus, Orient are only a point above Saints, and have played one game more. After tonight's fixtures, Saints lie in 12th spot. We're still in the mix, with an outside chance of making the playoffs. But we must convert every point possible. northam soul Posted 3 February, 2010 Share Posted 3 February, 2010 Surely the most important thing is winning at exeter, everything else is of no importance at the moment. If we win there then its the JPT to worry about so just forget all about other teams results and what might happen in 2 months time. Every game needs to be treated as a cup final now and just maybe we will edge closer to the top.

ludgershallsaint Posted 3 February, 2010 Share Posted 3 February, 2010 It isn't what other teams do that is most important. We need 73/74 points to have hope - it is as simple as that. 6/7 out of 9 in the next 3 league games that are all away and we'll be well placed for a push over the last 16 games (10 of which are at home).
