Fergie Posted 12 February, 2010 Share Posted 12 February, 2010 So we all like to think were Alan Pardew from time to time and like to think we can pick the team...so what do you think about the line-up tomorrow?? Will pards go for it and play 4-4-2...or will he be careful and go for a 4-5-1?? here i go... -----------------------------Davis---------------------------- --Thomas---------Fonte------------Seabourne-------Harding-- ----Antonio------Schneiderlin-------Hammond------Lallana----- ---------------Papa Waigo-----------Lambert----------------- Subs: Bailkowski, Jaidi, Mills, Holmes, Wotton, James, Barnard What you all think. callysaint76 Posted 12 February, 2010 Share Posted 12 February, 2010 Much as i would like to see that, i think it is too attacking and he will revert to the 4-5-1 and may possibly recall James or Wotton into the centre. Also Lee Holmes might start, like against Ipswich, due to him being better defensively than Antonio.

Their attack and midfield are quite good, they are just shocking in defence. We NEED to push forward all the time, to put their defence under pressure and also pull the midfield back to help out, thereby eliminating most of their attacking threat. It's not that, it's just that I feel that Pardew rates highly James whereas some of us don't, well not so much anyway.Wouldn't be at all surprised if he drops Morgan and plays James instead, unless he goes for a more defensive midfield and Antonio is the fall guy. CitySaint Posted 12 February, 2010 Share Posted 12 February, 2010 I think Perry, for Fonte will be the only change from Tuesday. In one of his interviews on Saints player he suggested that Antonio and Papa would play (although he did mistakenly call him Papa Dioup!!). No Reason for James to return, unless he feels Thomas can't play too games in a week or Chris Perry shouldn't start (which i disagree with). Onlt chance of James playing is at right back. Saint_clark Posted 12 February, 2010 Share Posted 12 February, 2010 Worried about central defence. Maybe we should play 4-5-1 and put Wotton in there. Wotton will do more harm than good. Jaidi worries me after tuesdays performance BUT he hadn't played for a couple of weeks. Perry has been unbeatable whenever he's played this season, he is a fantastic pro. As I keep saying, we NEED to attack in this game. If we set out to defend we will lose.
saints-cris Posted 12 February, 2010 Share Posted 12 February, 2010 Davis Thomas-Perry-Jaidi-Harding Antonio-Hammon-Schneiderlin-Lallana Lambert-Waigo Easily changing to: Davis Thomas-Peryy-Jaidi-Harding Antonio-Hammond-Schneiderlin-Waigo Lallana Lambert They'll have a lot of pace, we have to be really weary of that. However, we need to use our pace on the wings, I think thats where we can get at them. Get lallana in the middle if we're going a bit more defensive as I still think his best position is a kind of second striker role. That way with a 451 we can still use the wings as a real threat. Have to start 451 though, the crowd will be buzzing, get straight into them and maybe get an early goal. We just have to start positively. I sense magic tomorrow. Matthew Le God Posted 12 February, 2010 Share Posted 12 February, 2010 Worried about central defence. Maybe we should play 4-5-1 and put Wotton in there. Wotton is terrible. He has no pace and can't pass or control a ball. Yes, he works hard but as soon as he gets the ball Saints lose possession as he hoofs everything aimlessly. Saints need to go 442 against Pompey with Lambert and Papa Wagio upfront.

Window Cleaner Posted 12 February, 2010 Share Posted 12 February, 2010 (edited) Wow, that would be super. Especially as Pompey have an absolutely dire defence. We are the better side no matter what anyone may say.I looked at them against Utd and I've seen Midanbury Sports and the Clump Inn play better football than Pompey in that game. They only got an equaliser against Sunderland because they were down to 9 men mind you Skates were down to 10 as well. Portsmouth are a premier side in name only, their brand of football would keep them barely above the relegation places in the Championship, bad side, crap players. Fergie Posted 12 February, 2010 Author Share Posted 12 February, 2010 didn't realise Fonte was cup-tied...ouch!! massive loss! Feel without him there there will be uncertaincy in the back line! Fonte leads that line like a soilder. Big loss. I was in Madrid when we played Ipswich so didn't see the line-up!! Dont trust Jaidi after seeing him against MK in the week, very un-impressed with him. and the pace of utaka will have to be watched. I can see us playing a very deep defensive line to accomodate with this, and morgan and hammond playing box to box the whole game...would not be surprised is pards played the 4-5-1 to help cover the gap between morgan, hammond and the defence with james sitting in there. Free's Le Tiss....cough....i mean rickie to be in the box for corners and free-kicks too.

Chez Posted 12 February, 2010 Share Posted 12 February, 2010 Also Lee Holmes might start, like against Ipswich, due to him being better defensively than Antonio. ignoring the fact that one plays on the left and the other on the right, I would dispute the theory that Holmes is better than pretty much anyone defensively. All IMO of course. It will be the 4-4-2 line up mentioned on here already, if we go to 4-5-1 we'd have to drop Waigo and he has been very good in the recent home games. Tom28 Posted 12 February, 2010 Share Posted 12 February, 2010 -----------------------------Davis---------------------------- --Thomas---------Jaidi------------Perry----------Harding-- ----Antonio------Schneiderlin-------Hammond------Lallana----- ---------------Papa Waigo-----------Lambert----------------- Really hope this is the line up. Pardew might be tempted to go 4-5-1 and leave out Waigo or Antonio for Wotton or James to play the holding role but I think its a cup tie, and the best chance we've got of beating them is now, at home, so lets go for it. With a bench of Bart, James, Mills, Holmes, Wotton, Barnard and Connolly, if rumours are true he's fit again, I think that gives us enough options from the bench if we need to change things. I'm not sure I'll be able to sleep tonight.

Yes, he works hard but as soon as he gets the ball Saints lose possession as he hoofs everything aimlessly. Saints need to go 442 against Pompey with Lambert and Papa Wagio upfront. I would actually think that he has a pretty decent pass completion rate. He doesn't give the ball away that often. He generally plays quite short passes IMO rather than hoofs, the problem is more speed of thought, he takes ages to decide what to do, the opposition get back into position and we lose momentum. Occasionally he does, but most of the time he does a retarded little clippy forward pass thing, like a chip shot in golf. Gets held up in the air, doesn't go very far and the defender is always the favourite to win the ball.
Bartosz Bialkowski Posted 12 February, 2010 Share Posted 12 February, 2010 what scenario? When/if Lee Holmes comes in for Antonio. James Posted 12 February, 2010 Share Posted 12 February, 2010 Think it should be: Davis Thomas Jaidi Perry Harding Antonio Hammond Morgan Lallana Lambert Waigo Other than that I was thinking maybe: Davis Thomas Jaidi Perry Harding Antonio Hammond Morgan Waigo Lallana Lambert Only because their full backs are so slow that two pacey guys up against them might bring us some joy. If Connolly was fit I would controversially suggest dropping Lallana and playing 4-4-2 with Waigo and Antonio down the flanks purely for their pace. jasoneuelllfanclub Posted 12 February, 2010 Share Posted 12 February, 2010 James will play RM cus Antonio will leave Thomas exposed against Belhadj/Boateng. Antonio much better as impact sub anyway. James better crosser than Antonio. Pompey crap in defence so Waigo pace and trickery will mean he will take place up front with Lambert.
richardc Posted 12 February, 2010 Share Posted 12 February, 2010 Our recent poor patch was caused by being bereft of any creativity in midfield both James and Holmes in that period were slow, lightweight, predictable and lacking in any creativity - hammond has come in and given the midfield a backbone that the other more creative midfielders can build from - Antonio might not be the best crosser but he is always positive and scares the sh*t out of defenders so they have to double up on him which gives more space for the others at Millwall and MK he was the only one to create anything - James is at best a squad player to fill in if someone gets injured
beatlesaint Posted 12 February, 2010 Share Posted 12 February, 2010 I'm hoping the bit about Connolly being fit is true. If its 0-0 with 20 odd mins to go he would be ideal with his ability to create space for Lambert and Lallana, not to mention the undoubted goal threat he is. I agree with this and think Pardew will make this change, along with Perry for Fonte. I think Wotton (by his own standards) has done relatively well when he has played over the last few months, but he would really get found out playing against an (admittedly poor) Premiership team. He should be kept well away from the fray. I thought Thomas was truly shocking in all regards on Tuesday by the way, but it's pretty difficult to see who could play in place of him at r-b. I can see him getting torn to shreds by some of their pace though.
