A new Saints Fanzine for SFC - on sale (v Reading)

Hi guys, I am only an occasional poster on here but wanted to spread the word about a new club fanzine that myself and a fellow fan have set up. We are both lifelong fans and have put together The Saints Fanzine, which we will be distributing before tomorrow's game and on Tuesday against Eastleigh too.

It features:

- An exclusive Glenn ****erill interview

- World Cup chat with journo Jeremy Wilson

- A catch up with Saints ledge Marian Pahars

There is a little more info about it on my blog:

http://redandwhitebill.blogspot.com/2010/07/saints-fanzine-has-landed.html

But we are only charging a quid to cover costs and would love a few SaintsForum members to buy it as we know there a lot of diehards on here... So please come find us by the footbridge on Northam Rd and Britannia Rd too for a copy, only a quid.

Thanks, Will (Red and White Bill)

PS Once you have a copy, would love some feedback on here or on my blog... thanks.

I hope you succeed, as it's very difficult to take most PCs into the loo to read.

I've stuck the thread and hope you get a good response. I, for one can't make the two friendlies but will be keen to buy one before Plymouth.

Thanks for the positive response guys, and for making this a sticky -

I will be working out a way we can post these out, and write it on here over the weekend. Stay tuned!

If you are at the game tomorrow but can't locate us in the areas mentioned, please give me a ring on 07828 178154.

Why don't you just use something like http://issuu.com/explore instead of posting it out. You can still charge for content, I believe.

If you want to see a hard copy fanzine that works, and, from my limited knowledge, (son is a season ticket holder up there), is successful; try and get a copy of The Oatcake, Stoke City's fanzine. It's a terrific piece of opinionated writing, with elements of history, humour, and vitriol. Touted round the locals pubs on match days for £1.50.

The printed word can still work, at least for those who can read!

Good luck with it.

I often would buy the home team zine when going to Saints away games. I think quite a few people used to do that. The Internet obviously did cripple sales but I do think there is some sort of market out there for printed copy.

How many do you estimate you will sell? It's always a hard thing to get right. Especially the 1st issue. Print 100 and they sell out in an hour and you wish you had more. Print 1,000 and you only sell 400. Very hard to judge....

good to see a fanzine back, woner if it will be as 'clicky' as The Ugly, as mundane as 'Red Stripe' or as funny as 'On The March', probabaly missed one I bet.

Think you mean 'cliquey'. Red Stripe mundane? On The March funny?!

Redstripe was by far the funniest, and most intelligent. On The March was juvenile. The UI the most 'street'.

I fear the day of paper fanzines is over, but good luck to them. If I see them being sold before Plymouth I'll buy one.

Does it have a word search or crossword for half-time entertainment?

I have a copy here. It has a wordsearch and a Sudoku.

It's well printed, no typos found at the moment. Plenty of variety with input from Glen Co-ckerill and an interview with Super Marian.

Not outwardly political and well laid out.

I shall buy the next edition when I see it.

Well done boys!

Wasn't at all what I was expecting, but I quite enjoyed it.

It's an alternative to the official programme rather than a fanzine, really.

Probably not really opinionated/mocking/radical enough for my tastes, but could find a mainstream audience amongst the fanbase. In the "where are they now?" section, saying that Claus still "pops up in the papers" and suggesting the reason for the Bridge-Terry fallout is only "alleged" was a bit anodyne for a fanzine, I thought. Read more like something on the OS!

I'd think most hardened Saints fans would have found the 20 question quiz a bit easy, but maybe we're not the target audience.

A few typos/errors - but no worse than many official programmes.

1. "Ricky (sic) Lambert needs no introduction"

2. Wasn't Chris Marsden's wonder goal v Ipswich, not Leeds as suggested?

Wish you every success though and hope you make it a regular thing, I'd definitely buy future issues - and for a quid it was a bargain. It was well laid out, nicely presented, unpretentious and did pretty much exactly what it said on the tin.

Just started reading it after flicking through it and it seems really well laid out and a good mix of articles.

As the season starts and progresses I'm sure there will be much more to come with regards humour, opinion and critique.

Well done lads.

Couldn't find anyone selling it before the game but walking out there was someone on the road back towards Ocean Village so happily got one.

1) Think you need to be more specific where you are going to be and maybe times you are there, then people can make a detour to get one, more places the better!

2) Love the ex players bit and would be nice to expand on them, "where are they now" are always a good read and a Saintly England brought back memories (no not CB Fry)

3) 20 questions were way too easy but proved the grey matter is still working

4) Not enough "terrace humour" or is it gutter humour?, maybe not wanting to offend etc, but i hear worse from my 15 yr old, so maybe a "guest fan section recalling memories from matches, best away trip etc etc

5) Will you have "match reports" in future issues?

Have to say i enjoyed it, Shame i didnt get it before the match, plenty of effort put into it and worth a read by all, good luck i hope it pays off for you all

Hi everyone, thanks for all your positive comments and feedback, there were myself, Jim and two other friends selling yesterday and we shifted a lot. We will be selling at Eastleigh on Monday AND before the Plymouth game on Saturday. Again, if you are at these and can't locate us please give me a ring for a copy 07828 178154 and we can meet.

Some other points

- there are a couple of typos, and yes, Chris Marsden's mazy goal was against Ipswich not Leeds. Apologies! A friend has also pointed out that I don't actually say what Marsden is doing these days as well, so I don't really serve CMFG very well! Will try and get an interview for the next issue

- I have had some requests for them to be sent out and am very happy to do this. Just send me a private message and we can sort it out. I am also looking into online publishing which may be easier, but I know a lot of people would prefer a hard copy so will offer both alternatives. More to come on this shortly.

Again, thanks for the feedback, the more the better. We will be at Eastleigh on Monday (hopefully with signs this time to attract attention) so please look out and give us a ring if you are there and want a copy. Thanks, Will

Bought one yesterday was a good read. Could so with a section on something related to the fans or something similar. What have you given up to follow saints, what have you done out of the ordinary to get to a game, record of games - attended I heard someone from London hasn’t missed a match since the 70s. Something like that would be good, just an idea.

I've really been missing the old paper fanzines and have a box of old copies of OTM, UI, RS and BS (which I used to write in) so it's great to see some fans having a go at a new one. For all that's been said about online fanzines none of them have matched the old paper ones in terms of variety, amount and creativity of content.

I look forward to buying a copy before the Plymouth game.

RedStripe was bloody awful. The other two were much better.

Edit - actually I might be thinking of something else. I definitely preferred UI and OTM to one other one that was knocking around for a while.

Exactly. Good luck to the chaps who are doing this, really hope it gets off the ground, just hope it doesn't turn out to be an alternative programme. The best fanzines were always full of terrace humour, stories from travelling to away games, pubs, a few rants etc. Would be great to have a "proper" Saints fanzine back on the streets, I know plenty that would buy one.

Aye! to that. The official programmes are in my view worthless tat that add nothing to the match day experience so i don't buy them. Years ago, I used to buy every one and store them away as souvenirs, how times have changed now that commercial interests outweigh every thing else. I'll give the fanzine a whirl if a seller is in prominence on Saturday but please no filth, keep it clean, make it funny, fill it with good information taht we can't get anywhere else, no trips down memory lane. We all loved Channon, Keegan, Paine and Le Toss but that was then and this is now, the best may be yet to come.

Good Luck! A quid eh? Crikey! that used to buy two tickets at the Odeon and a nice F & C supper to follow, wrapped in an old copy of the Southern Evening Echo which you could read for free afterwards. If you were really lucky it would be the football edition.....

Hopefully some left for the Orient home game (unless you're planning on shipping a few out to Turkey this weekend?). ;)

For me the Ugly Inside was your classic fanzine *****il it got a bit too political towards the end) and when word went round a new one was coming out it added a bit of anticipation to the weekend.

Note to self, must go and dig out all those old copies from the loft.

How TUI was street when was written by Clive "and his brown leather jacket" Foley is beyond me!

I think Branfoot preferred OTM...

Personally I think the art of a good fanzine is being off the wall, contentious and perhaps juvenile (as you put it), the definition should be 'not to be taken too seriously' and I always thought TUI was a bit 'old', fine for your 70's terrace boys but it never really came up to date for me. OTM went in a completely different direction which probabaly did not appeal to the purists at all, more to the emrging Brit Pop generation. RS and The BS came a bit later and once again, a bit straight for my liking. As I said 'off the wall' and you can't get any more 'off the wall' than hoping your manager is going to die (and that was definately juvenile) but you get (or not perhaps) the idea.

I for one will be looking out for this zine at SMS, long overdue, **** the net, theres nothing better than sitting down at HT reading something funny and interesting, which is why i don't buy the programme!

There is definately still room for a "paper" publication amongst niche markets like football fans.

I, like many others, read this website because in between the in-fighting, points scoring and power mongering, there is

a healthy mix of decent debate, intelligent comment and humour.

Use these as your base requirements for content and your on to a winner.

good luck!
