As Steve has said above, the mods won't tell people what to think or do. I doubt anyone is really *backing* The Sun or The Echo, and as I said, I have no time for either of them myself particularly. However on this issue I feel the club is wrong, and I am willing to say so.

Personally I don't think there will be enough people who are that bothered about the Sun (and other papers as well - are you going to hypothetically boycott the Telegraph and Guardian, even though you may not even buy them? They've negatively covered the story as well, after all) and its coverage of the photography situation to boycott the paper if they do buy it regularly.

I'd be inclined to think that libelling an entire city's population on the front of the paper based on half-truths and outright lies in the wake of a national tragedy is a LITTLE bit more of a motivator than a tedious dispute about who pays for photographs of a team which rarely even makes their pages.

If you are unable to go to a game, watch the highlights on youtube, loads of people post there videos from mobiles on there...

I agree with Goalie66. I hate the paper with a passion. I have many clients in Liverpool & wether they are blue or red despise them for what they wrote about Hillsborough. I have never looked at the paper again even if its sitting on a seat on a train. NC should back track & allow them in even if he looks a little silly.

If for example a saints player headbutted an opposition player would Saints release a photo of the player getting sent off?

I hadn't bothered to even look at what the Sun were doing, as to my mind the comic is an irrelevance to me and I'm sure that most serious minded people don't bother with reading it either.

 

But out of curiosity, I read their article on that other thread that I hadn't bothered to read also (because there were several other threads going on this subject of the press ban) and I re-established the reason why the Sun is mainly read by either people of a low IQ, or those who get their jollies looking at the page three girls with their kit off.

 

This is what I read together with my comments, the article written in typical over-the-top language and making allegations dressed up as fact, much as some on here do.

This senseless move will not make him extra money but it will turn the fans and, more importantly, sponsors away from the club.

 

So the fans are going to stop supporting the club, are they? And arguably the extra publicity garnered by this story might actually make the club more attractive to sponsors, not that I'd expect the Sun to realise that.

 

After so many dismal years of decline Southampton need all the publicity they can get while they fight their way back up the divisions.

 

And thanks to the Sun, publicity is exactly what we are getting.

 

What they don't need is a dictator who thinks he knows what's best for the club by denying fans the pictures they deserve in their No 1 paper.

 

Who cares whether we have pictures of the team in the Sun? Apart from the Sun, of course. And whilst we are talking about dictators, the name Rupert Murdoch sprung into my mind.

 

We apologise to the supporters who have stuck by their club through thick and thin. We make no apology to Cortese.

 

So there are fans who have stuck with the club through thick and thin, but who will be turned away from the club according to the Sun a few lines above. Contradiction alert.

I must admit that I really do not understand this decision by Mr. Cortese at all, as the Echo did report today that Saints used to get free photogrpahs from the away games; rather than send their own photographer at Saints cost, so the whole thing has left me baffled frankly, I just fail to see what was wrong with doing things they way we did along with all the other league clubs.

When it comes down to it, a load of us think he's in the wrong, and everything other than the Saints OS which is media-based is going to tell us he's wrong at every opportunity as well. And if I'm he's in the right (I'm wholly unconvinced), if you repeat a lie often enough it becomes regarded as fact.

 

Anyone who doesn't believe that might like to cast their mind back to when we beat Man U 6-3 and they changed kit at half time... which gets an airing from a commentator pretty much every time Saints are mentioned from a recent historical perspective, and got mentioned when we played them in the FA Cup in 2009, but never actually happened.

Whatever the rights and wrongs of this move it is certainly NOT about press freedom. The Echo claim that it challenges "the freedom of expression and of free press" is ridiculous. League Football matches are events held on private property which the public have to pay to see. There has never been a right for press photographers to take pictures where and when they like and the press have no 'right' to stand behind the goal at St Mary's with a camera. The real issue here is about who distributes the photos. Yes, the press might argue that the club will censor pictures showing the Saints in a bad light. The club could equally argue that some parts of the press would deliberately select pictures that harm the club. There is no absolute right and wrong position. If the press are that concerned about fighting for their freedom to report why do they turn up at endless, stage managed press conferences which tell the public only what the clubs want them to know?
