Seaside Saint 2 Posted 17 November, 2010 Share Posted 17 November, 2010 Not sure I'd count Leon Best either, he hasn't played for Newcastle in the league at all this year, and he didn't exactly set the world on fire at Coventry.
norwaysaint Posted 17 November, 2010 Share Posted 17 November, 2010 Oakley? WTF? He was always class for us. Anyone who thought otherwise was just showing themselves to be clueless. Oakley was regularly slated for looking disinterested and not trying hard enough, often accused of straying in and out of the game. During Kevin Davies' second spell they often used to get similar criticism. Then he was injured for a while and it coincided with some pretty poor form. People wrote on here that it was Oakley that we were missing and that he quietly did the important stuff nobody noticed (nobody had really written this before he was out), then he came back again and was generally criticised, along with Delap, for being disinterested and playing poorly. He was one of those players who always got loads more praise when he wasn't playing. I know this is true because that was at a time when I didn't get to see or hear many matches and was mostly reliant on this place to find out how the team was playing. I can tell you for certain that in post match write ups Oakley was almost never described as having been "class", although he was often called that while he was injured. Kevin Davies was slated as an utter waste of space by about 95 percent of posts about matches at the same time.

The9 Posted 17 November, 2010 Share Posted 17 November, 2010 That is exactly how i remember it too. Same for Prutton, who at least we can all agree reached his peak before or at Saints. I'd like to put Agustin Delgado and Kleber Chala in that list too.

He played the same role that Hammond does, & like him, when he played well the team did well but he never got noticed till he wasn't there or played badly. I know we missed him badly in the relegation season. Also 300+ games in the top flight for us over 10 years hardly qualifies for this thread imo. That is the point of this thread though, players fans said were crap but obviously weren't and proved this. Oakley deserves his place because although he played 300 games for us and was a quality player fans slagged him off all of the time, i remember it clearly. Claims that he is slow, contributes nothing, never scores, only passes sideways and backwards etc, i remember Dave Jones i think saying Oakley was the best footballer at the club and him being mocked for this. Turns out he was far off the mark.

Turkish Posted 17 November, 2010 Author Share Posted 17 November, 2010 Paul Smith hasn't done it at a higher level, he did it in the top flight for us. And why do people keep saying DMG? Still, in L1, he is the worst player I've seen. His time at Forest hasn't shown any different, in fact he's been worse. Awful, awful player only eclipsed in awfulness by his attitude. I struggled with a GK TBH, couldn't think of anyone else. Paul jones was the only other one and in hindsight a better choice, slagged off when here but still in goal for Wales when he was 40 and we were relegated. Kevin Davies was slated as an utter waste of space by about 95 percent of posts about matches at the same time. Yep, that's about right! In my opinion we wasted Matt Oakley's talent plonking him in that crappy holding midfield role. I guess there was little option but to put him there as Delap was seen as being the one to push forward (Strachan made the decision early on that Delap was a liability at right-back and so put him in the middle), and obviously when he played with Svensson - well, there was no chance of him getting too far forward! This position has different variations throughout the world, but in English football if you're going to play there you need to be able to put in a decent tackle and help protect your defenders. He wasn't a particularly good tackler and had a lot more to offer than just simply passing it 5-10 yards (which incidentally he did very well). He's filled that role very well over the years but for me there will always be an element of regret that we never got the best out of him.

I agree, Forest fans consider him their worst buy for a long time, we sold him for a million I think? He hasn't done anything to justify that price-tag. rolosfc Posted 17 November, 2010 Share Posted 17 November, 2010 I don't know how Oakley or Ormerod can be in this. Both played regularly for us in the Prem and although they didn't set the world alight they were decent performers. Neither has exactly been a superb Prem player since. I would also argue that Kev Davies shouldn't be in there. I know he is now an 'international' but he was definitely good enough when he was here. Fans slagged off Oakley, Ormerod and Davies when they were here, yes they were good enough, but at the time most fans thought they weren't FFS!!
