Murty ?

Looking around on the beeb found this little article on Murty mostly about Reading. However in one place he says he hopes to play for Southampton again. Kind of weird I thought even if he got (is) fit at 36 couldn't see him getting a game for us again considering our options at RB this season.

Would have been interesting to see how the team would have done last season if Murty had stayed fit. He looked good for the few games he got and we might have done better with an experinced RB last season rather than geting by like we did.

I don't know what for or how NA feels about that, I have just seen him in the stadium and going in and out of the various rooms in and around the changing room and the changing room itself.

Strange then.I'd not tolerate an outsider hanging about myself but there you go,perhaps he has some sort of job with the club still.

he ( not the bbc journalist) says he still wants to play for saints - not saying it will happen - but he seems to believe there is a possibility it might. So not sure the club see him as an outsider.

Murty is still here, we are looking after him with treatment etc

not on a contract though I suppose, maybe he has some sort of staff job. Still I guess it's easier understand how leftback got his information though,

not that it's anything to do with Murty but if there are people hanging around that aren't really employed by the club and yet who are close to the team

like that it's so much easier to understand leaks of minor information like team make up.

He is out of contract - if he is being paid it is in a coaches role.

That quote about still hoping to play for Saints was after last season, before we signed Richardson and Butterfield.

As for whether Adkins likes him hanging around or not - if he didn't, he wouldn't be there. Simple as that.

Interesting editing then becuase they make out they spoke to him a few days ago after a Reading match and quote him as saying he still hopes to play for us the implication being that he said that during the interview not several months ago. Either way can't see it happening.

All of this;

"It's been very frustrating. I've had two operations on my ankle and I can't wait to get back on a footy pitch now," he said.

"I want to play, and hopefully I'll get to play for Southampton again. I want to play somewhere and do the job that I know I can do.

"But I'm also doing all my media work and completing all my coaching awards so I'll have to see what transpires from that," he said."

Is from an interview in pre-season. I'm sure of it.

but the BBC shoved it out on the 15th of November last, that's why it makes so little sense. There was an Echo piece in May where he says AP was allowing him treatment facilities and participation in pre-season.

It makes perfect sense. They got a quote from him regarding Readings season so far, and decided to fill the article out a bit by adding in a quote about him possibly playing again this season.

This is about as likely as me waxing my balls and ass crack, and then convincing my mrs to eat the removed hair in a sandwich with a thinly spread layer of mustard.

If you don't tell her about the hair you may just be able to get away with it. You may need a thicker layer of mustard, though.

  • 2 months later...
I can't see him displacing Butterfield or Richardson. Probably training with Saints until he gets a contract elsewhere.

If he played to the standard he did when he first joined us I think he would be first choice. However chances of getting back to that level at his age are slim.

It would be good if the club could retian him some way.

He really wasn't that good...absence makes the heart grow fonder and all that crap.

No, I remember saying how important he was when he was in the team. We know he wasn't a god, but I do agree that he'd be first choice in our team right now if he could perform how he did for us when he wasn't crocked.

I sat down the bottom of the itchen stand (towards the chapel end) for one of his first games at st mary's, so had a close up view of him, and, whilst not the best right back in the world, he brought a helluva lot to our championship side at the time (captain mentality, wealth of experience, a footballer who used his brain, winning 50/50 balls, etc)

Sometimes 'soft' skills are as important as 'hard' skills in this game they call football.

I would have him back in the team like a flash if he was fit.

Murty is doing his coaching badges and Saints have offered their assistance, he can often be seen around S/wood with J Dodd. I think its a good thing to have a guy with a couple of promotions under his belt around the squad.

If NA had a problem with that Murty would not be around its as simple as that. (Murty that is)

Seems like a level headed pro, and someone with the sort of experience that would be useful to have around the club in some capacity.

I thought his injury and our subsequent lack of decent cover at RB last season was quite a big factor in us not making the play offs. He was a very important player for us in terms of on-pitch organisation, and very solid in defence. We were quite comfortably winning the cup game against Birmingham before he got crocked. As soon as he went off we completely fell apart. After that we ended up playing the rest of the season with Lloyd James and Ostemobor at RB, both of whom to be fair were mediocre at best.

Brought a helluva lot to our championship side? What on earth are people talking about here?

He was a very good right back for the situation we were in, but IMO both Richardson and Butterfield are much better.

If I had to bet on it, I'd be inclined to think that what was meant was either

"he significantly improved the side that got relegated from the championship when he briefly played at the start of the following season"

or more likely

"oops, I meant our League One side, have we really been in this division that long?"

I also thought Murty did well for us at the time, but then any right back who was able to clear the ball without slicing it off the pitch looked good at the time - he ALWAYS tried to get it down the line if he could avoid putting it out.

As a 38-year old who is still (just) playing myself, I'm pretty sure that he won't be back at the level he was at 18 months ago, he wouldn't bring anything Butterfield or Richardson wouldn't already on the pitch, and they've got youth on their side, relatively speaking.

I'm pretty sure you can buy one of those in Subway.

That's sooooo last month ... Nigel would simply control the controllables now.

Do keep up ... ;)

Yeah, saw him reception in full Saints trackie gear on Sat and thought this was strange as I must have previously missed this thread. Fair play to him.

You were ITK and didn't even realise!!

I'm a fan of Butterfield but what Murty would bring to the team that we lack is organisation. He talks to everone around he through out the game and I think that is one of the biggest weaknesses with our team at the moment.

Are you kidding?? We're one of the most organised sides, defensively and at attacking set pieces, you'll see this season.

And don't bring up the couple of goals we conceded because Davis has come out and not shouted to the defender, because Murty being in the team wouldn't suddenly make Davis more vocal.
