Colinjb Posted 5 January, 2011 Share Posted 5 January, 2011 Give the fringe players a chance and rest the main few. The league is too important to risk on cup runs this year.
Saint Garrett Posted 5 January, 2011 Share Posted 5 January, 2011 Keep the momentum...maybe just rest Chambo, but I think we should go with strongest possible team.
SaintDonkey Posted 5 January, 2011 Share Posted 5 January, 2011 So if it were a fringe 11 who would it be? Bart certainly but across the back four there's only really Aaron Martin who's not in regular rotation at the moment. In midfield there's Gobern drifting around the fringes of the first team and possibly Harlee Dean with one bench warming to his name. Up front Connolly and Doble? Joesaint Posted 5 January, 2011 Share Posted 5 January, 2011 I would rest some of the team as league is important and use the game to help players like Barny to improve there sharpness, after not playing from the start. I would play Golbern and would resh OC. I would def play Bart in goal.

Posted on the other thread, made up of players who have not been starting consistently recently (if not out of the frame completely), with one obvious exception. ----------------- Barnard ------------ Connolly ------------------ Lallana ---------- Gobern ----------- Schneiderlin ----------- Dean Dickson ---------- Martin ------------ Seaborne -------- Butterfield -------------------------- Bialkowski ----------------------------- Struggled to think of someone who could play in Adam's place. Doble would be a good shout to come on as sub.
Redbul Posted 5 January, 2011 Share Posted 5 January, 2011 Go for it. It's a win/win game, even if we lose (that does make sense, give it a moment). If we put out a team of fringe players and we get spanked morale goes out the window. We've got some momentum at the moment so let's keep rolling with it. Lighthouse Posted 5 January, 2011 Share Posted 5 January, 2011 I say play a strong team and go all out for the win. 'Pool have just lost at home to Brum, through a last minute goal. That will have been hugely demoralising and have them looking tentatively over their shoulder (5 points above the drop zone as it stands). It could get worse for them before Saturday with Everton, Wigan, West Ham, Villa and Blackburn all in action tonight. I'd swap a few players personally, but I'd expect Adkins to go with a pretty much full strength side. MY pick: Bart FR Fonte Martin Harding Lallana Chaplow Morgan Dickson Lambert Barnard

badgerx16 Posted 5 January, 2011 Share Posted 5 January, 2011 It should be an open game; assuming Ollie sticks with 4-3-3 there will be headaches for our back four and opportunities for our attackers. Kingson can be quite static in goal, and as long as we can find a way of controlling Charlie Adam, if he plays, I think we have a very good chance. JRM Posted 5 January, 2011 Share Posted 5 January, 2011 I watched the highlights on sky last night of their game v Birmingham, was an excellent match both team really going for it, Blackpool players sank to their knees at the end having lost to a last minute goal after giving it so much effort. Jason Euell came on and is a threat physically, but no pace, will be strange seeing Ormerod again will bring back a few memories. We might as well go for it, play a strong team, and as fans stop bloody panicing about what might happen and enjoy what should be a cracking cup tie. I noticed someone posted yesterday lunchtime that over 15k tickets had been sold, hopefully that gets over 20k and Blackpool bring a few down should make it a decent atmosphere. K,Billy's supersound Posted 5 January, 2011 Share Posted 5 January, 2011 i really wouldnt play the strongest possible team so my team with the more important league game away to oldham on tuesday in mind would be. davis frazer fonte seabounre dickson hammond chaplow puncheon if still here on the right gobern on the left lambert guly subs, bart, butters, jaidi, morgan, lallana, barnard, doble in defence we are very stong so can afford to make minimal changes if any atall so only the one for me, i dont really like upsetting the defence to much. but in midfeild though we are abit light. with only 6 players i would ever want to begin a game fighting for 4 spots imo we really need to bring in new bodys to improve options and competition. if we suffer injuires and more likley suspensions to 2 or more then we will be struggling and would have to turn to lesser tried players like gobern. same with strikers cant really change them much as options for me arn't there so its two from barnard, lambert and guly. really need 1 more. if our season were to fail because of a lack of goals scored from now untill may then it would be a travesty. The Cat Posted 5 January, 2011 Share Posted 5 January, 2011 I agree, play a strong side. This is a winnable game against a better team than us which could lead to a plum 4th round tie. We may even get Pompey away. Hopefully it will be an exciting game as I'm taking my 5 year old son to his first match and I don't want him to witness a dull 0-0 that will put him off for life! Please no.....not this season......if there's anything that could derail our quest for automatic promotion it's the cut and thrust of a clash against our local rivals....the hype would be a huge distraction for the players..... IMHO of course (that said, if we were to beat them and come out injury free it could turn out to be a catalyst.....now, how do I get down from this fence....?) saintjay77 Posted 5 January, 2011 Share Posted 5 January, 2011 Should be a good game as both them and us do better at attacking than defending. Next round is not important but would be a bonus if we got there so it's a no pressure game for us IMO. Blackpool will be expected to beat us and won't be happy to lose to a league 1 club. trousers Posted 5 January, 2011 Share Posted 5 January, 2011 Blackpool will be expected to beat us and won't be happy to lose to a league 1 club. True....although, arguably, losing to a 'big name' (aka relatively recent ex-prem side) in League One, such as Saints, Sheff Wed or Charlton, is psychologically less embarrassing than losing to a 'minnow' League One team, such as Bournemouth, Brighton or Dagenham ..... ;-)

Saint 76er Posted 5 January, 2011 Share Posted 5 January, 2011 Hard for us to play our "reserves", as what passes for our reserve side don't really seem to play matches any more. Just a 1st team squad and under 21's that include 1st team squad members if they need match practice at any time. They play against any team that want a match by all accounts and do fairly well all things considered. I doubt many of them will get a run out against Blackpool considering they didnt get a run out in the last round either I think.

Lighthouse Posted 5 January, 2011 Share Posted 5 January, 2011 (edited) Genuine question. Did the JPT really cost us any league games last season? No, a 10 point deduction did. Without it we'd have been second in all likelyhood, haven't pretty much build a new squad from scratch. By far our worst run of results last season came in August and September, before the JPT had even started. Last time we got to the FA Cup final we finished 8th in the Premier League. Says it all IMO. Edit: Here's the League 1 table SINCE the first round of the JPT last season (2-2 draw with Torquay) Norwich - 79 Saints - 71 (Bearing in mind we played a weakend squad for the penultimate fixture, knowing we were already out of it, should really be 74) Millwall - 71 Swindon - 64 Charlton - 60 Leeds - 59 Edited 5 January, 2011 by Lighthouse
