Season Ticket emails

People mentioned the lack of email reminders to buy Season Tickets last year as part of the Cortese Conspiracy to get people to buy on a match-by-match basis and pay Cortese Tax.

This year, as a 2010/11 ST holder I got an email from Leila Habibi (as opposed to Southampton FC) with pretty much the most perfunctory "don't forget to renew" message possible. It was in no way any kind of sales job or marketing, but at least they actually sent one this year.

Have any of the non-ST holders here on the database had an email enticing them into buying an ST yet ? Or is that something that looks like it can wait until the renewal period is up in a fortnight ?

I'm not sure whether this is an improvement or just another sign that the communication from the club is as minimal as possible.

I wouldn't bother sending an email if I was Saints. Everyone knows you can buy season tickets before the season. Everyone knows what they will get. The ST is an expensive discretionary spend and I doubt anyone will be swayed one way or the other by whether or not they receive an email.

There is absolutely no need to send email reminders to people. Waste of resources.

What resources might they be? Someone going 'click'?

Not as much of a waste as printing flyers or hiring Lawrie Mac for a recorded telephone message. While I would say about 95% of season ticket holders would have already checked up on the details for the coming season, a 1 hour job for an office hand to knock together a reminder would certainly be a good idea.

Interesting you say that, I work with someone who moved over from Germany, lives in Bracknell, went to a couple of Reading games and was on their database, the marketing sent out by them highlighting the early deals to be had buying season tickets has resulted in him buying one for him and one for his son.

Sorry mate I can't agree with that. With less than ten clicks of a mouse they can email the entire database, which may act as a timely reminder for some, an oh fook, forgot all about it for others and a gentle nudge in the right direction for a few.

The window is very short..... with holidays and such like coming up, it will be easy for a few to forget or miss.

All they have is my address, like with most on their database. If they really wanted to contact the fanbase they should do it by mail.

However, I think it is unlikely that someone that spends 23 days+ at St Mary's each year and hundreds of pounds is likely to forget season tickets are done in the summer or know that they can visit the ticket page of the OS to know the details.

IIRC, they actually DID send one out last season, but it turned out that most people just didn't have their email addresses on the database.

I haven't changed my details for ages, and I didn't get one last year and did this. Maybe they used a different method of compiling the list.

That's true, but it's been a few weeks since the ST prices were announced, and though some of us (inc me) have been counting the days until they or someone else stumps up for their ST, not everyone has it in the front of their minds, nor will they necessarily remember that within the fairly short renewal period.

That does of course mean that the club would get more money for the same product having missed out on the renewal price, but call me a cynic...

Not necessarily true - I wasn't sure of the renewal and cut-off dates for my ST (which are artificially determined - its fatuous to say that its enough to know that STs are done in the summer - renewals have a very tight window) and sometimes these things can be difficult to find on an awkward OS, especially as we're human and occassionally misread things- so yes yesterday's reminder was helpful - not a lifesaver; but reassuring.

I also nearly missed out on tickets for the Leyton Orient game because of poor communication and a surge in demand. An email reminder on the Monday morning would have made a huge difference, though I managed to get a ticket in the second batch. Indeed, the club's whole approach to communicating away ticket sales could be made simpler; but of course it doesnt have any straightforward incentive to do so.

But as I said, every fan is surely aware of this existing aren't they?

It isn't exactly hidden away on the OS, there is a ticket tab on the top bar. It links quickly to this page...

Rare slip up from you here MLG, however not 'every fan' has the internet.

If it was up to me I'd at least send postal reminders to the senior citizen season ticket holders as they are the most likely group of fans to not use the internet.

Matthew Le God has clearly never worked in sales & marketing.

If you have a product you want to sell, you make your market aware and promote it to maximise sales.

If you assume that everyone knows, yet offer a 2 week period it does not follow that your market will neccessarily all go out of their way to hunt down and buy the product.

I look at other clubs who's mailing lists i am on.

emails, detailing dates on sale (for long periods of time) , costs etc, clearly set out and making it easy to make the purchase.

Not every season-ticket holder has internet access, nor emails, especially the 'agedly challenged', in which case a postal reminder/invitation would have been the sensible approach.

Looks like we're in agreement there!

Its far from straightforward to me when and how long the cut-off for renewing STs is - there's nothing logical about starting on July1 and ending on July 14, esp compared to your facetious statement that STs are bought during the summer (I wish it were that simple). We're also human - we sometimes get lost in mountains of text -more likely when a price plan is written for all kinds of customers with all kinds of needs (surely a personalised email or letter just for existing STs is clearer?). Finally science underlines how humans procastrinate, how we tend put off decisions off to our cost and regret; as such, any gentle reminder or nudge, even a cursory email on something as ultimately trivial as a ST renewal, is to be welcomed. FFS am a mug for getting caught up in this...

Me too but they've stopped surface mailing renewal forms so looks like a scrummage up there on Friday. Why people panic and have to be first in line is anybody's guess but panic they do and no bets taken on how long the queue will be at 8.00 am

In fairness the season tickets page is exactly hidden away.

Actually not all ST holders with internet access ( who have rec'd emails from the club in the past) have rec'd anything.

Interesting that I am email contact for 3 accounts, of which one was dropped a few years back and I have only rec'd one for the old account and NOT the current two.

Cheers

Alan

I got one, but I deleted it without reading it as I thought it was spam (I've been getting spam from people with unusual names recently). If it had come from "Southampton FC", I'd have read it. I wonder how many others did this?
