Thedelldays Posted 29 May, 2012 Share Posted 29 May, 2012 I remember being genuinely excited by us signing Prutton - he was the kind of player that was in all the "young players to watch" articles at the time and it felt like a genuine coup to sign him. In fact, I will feel just the same if we sign JR. Let's see how it pans out. he was a very very good player for the U21 at the time...captain I think..one of the stand out players. I remember a big fuss when we got prutton as "many" clubs wanted him etc etc
Lighthouse Posted 29 May, 2012 Share Posted 29 May, 2012 Prutton looked like he had some decent potential under Strachan. His career could have been completely different if it wasn't for a series of dodgy managers, sh*t teams, injuries and a long suspension. He had a terrible environment in which to develop his tallent, Jrod won't have this issue.

Under Weststand Posted 29 May, 2012 Share Posted 29 May, 2012 You just never know how a transfer will work out. One player can look bad at one club but great at another. Just look how Jos worked out. What we look to be trying to buy here is potential, Rodriguez appears to have pace touch scores all sorts of goals & fits into our player profile at the moment. 7~mill is a lot of money, but that's what life in the prem brings. I hope this deal goes through. Breaking news on Sky now Southampton in talks with Burnley over deal to sign Jay Rodriguez, which could be worth up to 7-mill. Gambol2K9 Posted 29 May, 2012 Share Posted 29 May, 2012 Look at the amount of players that have been brought in by Adkins and have improved massively due to the quality of our coaching setup. His stats for last season is irrelevant, he has bags of potential that can be developed into him becoming a top player. I trust our scouts and management, if they believe he's worth £7 million then so be it.

dellboypete Posted 29 May, 2012 Share Posted 29 May, 2012 from the Guardian today Southampton want Burnley's England Under-21 striker Jay Rodriguez, and are prepared to pay £6.5m. Imagine, that's nearly two Agustín Delgados. Richard Chaplow, 10 times a Cléber Chalá, will go the other way.

saintbob40 Posted 29 May, 2012 Share Posted 29 May, 2012 Two footed, decent in the hair and clever on the ball, English and 22. Think a young Teddy Sherringham ( I hope....) and a good foil to SRL. In the championship team of the year and a mate to Cork and Fox also so should settle quickly. Just the sort of player we should be signing. If we get Curtis Davies also I would be chuffed. Brussels Saint Posted 29 May, 2012 Share Posted 29 May, 2012 Good news if it works out. For me Jay Rodriguez is the most similar to Lambert as he can operate in a similar way, as a fulcrum for attack. Now if Lambert is injured/suspended we need to change our style. A lot of money, but I like this player.
buctootim Posted 29 May, 2012 Share Posted 29 May, 2012 I don't know, it was looking as if Sharp was going to struggle for games until Lee got injured. Dont disagree. Just think Sharp is more of a box striker, RL is very good at holding up, knocking down and set pieces, but TL and Rodriguez are more alike in that they are both creative and unpredictable and banging them in from long distance. doddisalegend Posted 29 May, 2012 Share Posted 29 May, 2012 Sorr to repeat but no chance of him and Hooper then I take it? I'm assuming not J-Rod would give us four strikers fighting it out for 2 spots and Lee Barnard. Can't see us adding another expensive striker in Hooper to the mix as well. I think he'll be first choice for most games, but that Adkins will try and mix it up a bit more this season now he has more options to play with. Our biggest fault last year was being a bit predictable. Rodriguez can also play as a winger....which is actually where we are most short atm. Matthew Le God Posted 29 May, 2012 Share Posted 29 May, 2012 Are Burnley still mad that Cork chose us over them? The9 Posted 29 May, 2012 Share Posted 29 May, 2012 Why? Because I think Sharp is more mobile, has more pace, makes better runs, creates more space and as a result, offers more of a threat at the top level. Also, he's less injury prone. Lambert's skillset and aerial ability will be very useful in some games, but I can't see us (for example) sticking him up front against Man U away and expecting him to chase down everything for 90 minutes, whereas I can see Sharp doing exactly that. It will also depend on who else we sign though, if we get someone mobile with aerial ability in, Lambert will be less used, if we get more nippy finishers in, Sharp might get phased out. I'm also looking at when we signed them and how the evolution of the team might progress. There's not going to be much room for one-paced, relatively immobile players who can't beat anyone in the Prem side.

Matthew Le God Posted 29 May, 2012 Share Posted 29 May, 2012 (edited) holt is more mobile than lambert...IN MY OPINION (before you go all statto on me) How many of Holt's league goals last season do you think came down to beating a Premier League defender for pace? A number of Lambert come about due to his clever movement away from centre-backs and onto fullback's to beat them in the air at the far post on diagonals. No matter how good a defender the likes of Ashley Cole are, Lambert will beat him in the air every time. Pace also not required for his superb free-kicks and penalty taking ability, nor his long range shots and good passing, first touch and vision.
