Jay Rodriguez - Signs on a 4 Year Deal

I remember being genuinely excited by us signing Prutton - he was the kind of player that was in all the "young players to watch" articles at the time and it felt like a genuine coup to sign him.

In fact, I will feel just the same if we sign JR. Let's see how it pans out.

he was a very very good player for the U21 at the time...captain I think..one of the stand out players.

I remember a big fuss when we got prutton as "many" clubs wanted him etc etc

Prutton looked like he had some decent potential under Strachan. His career could have been completely different if it wasn't for a series of dodgy managers, sh*t teams, injuries and a long suspension. He had a terrible environment in which to develop his tallent, Jrod won't have this issue.

You just never know how a transfer will work out. One player can look bad at one club but great at another. Just look how Jos worked out. What we look to be trying to buy here is potential, Rodriguez appears to have pace touch scores all sorts of goals & fits into our player profile at the moment. 7~mill is a lot of money, but that's what life in the prem brings. I hope this deal goes through. Breaking news on Sky now Southampton in talks with Burnley over deal to sign Jay Rodriguez, which could be worth up to 7-mill.

Look at the amount of players that have been brought in by Adkins and have improved massively due to the quality of our coaching setup. His stats for last season is irrelevant, he has bags of potential that can be developed into him becoming a top player.

I trust our scouts and management, if they believe he's worth £7 million then so be it.

Two footed, decent in the hair and clever on the ball, English and 22. Think a young Teddy Sherringham ( I hope....) and a good foil to SRL.

In the championship team of the year and a mate to Cork and Fox also so should settle quickly.

Just the sort of player we should be signing. If we get Curtis Davies also I would be chuffed. Thomas Ince apparently fancies himself a bit, not sure he would fit in as well.....

Curtis Davies was good an awfully long time ago. Has looked awful in recent years. Wouldn't want him anywhere near us.

I'm guessing Billy Sharp is 3rd/4th choice striker now then..

Not sure. RL, Sharp and Rodriguez are all quite different so would enable Adkins to play lots of permutations. Tadanari Lee would be the one most usurped by Rodriguez's arrival imo.

I don't know, it was looking as if Sharp was going to struggle for games until Lee got injured.

Dont disagree. Just think Sharp is more of a box striker, RL is very good at holding up, knocking down and set pieces, but TL and Rodriguez are more alike in that they are both creative and unpredictable and banging them in from long distance.

Sorr to repeat but no chance of him and Hooper then I take it?

I'm assuming not J-Rod would give us four strikers fighting it out for 2 spots and Lee Barnard. Can't see us adding another expensive striker in Hooper to the mix as well. Rather we got in some extra defenders TBH.

Well I doubt we're going to spend near on 7 million on a player and not have him down as pretty much a first choice every game. Can't see rickie being dropped so that leaves Billy and Tadanari as back up/Carling cup players.

I think he'll be first choice for most games, but that Adkins will try and mix it up a bit more this season now he has more options to play with. Our biggest fault last year was being a bit predictable. Rodriguez can also play as a winger....which is actually where we are most short atm.

Strange that the Burnley fans site sem to think nothing will happen now because Jay is on holiday. Given that it will be his agent doing all the real negotiations I reckon a couple of mobile phone calls to the beach will cover a 'yes' or 'no' from the player. Maybe modern technology hasn't reached lancashire yet?

Ricky will no doubt NOT play every game. He has done very well with injuries and there is a chance he could lose form.

Norwich managed holt very well the season just gone IMO

You mean apart from him handing in a transfer request:lol:

Yes Rickie might get injured but I was more interested in who will be our first choice paring up front I'm guessing a 7 million pound fee gets your name on the team sheet and Rickie isn't going to be left out unless,as you say, he is injuried.

Contrary to popular opinion, it's probably worth pointing out that JRod played a season in the PL with Burnley and although only young was widely praised for his potential.

There you are, he is already a PL star! ;)

Not sure that he actually played a single game though, got injured in the reserves and then went on loan to Barnsley.

Contrary to your opinion, he's never kicked a ball in the Prem. He only played in two Carling Cup matches in their Prem season and was sent out on loan to Barnsley. Burnley were then relegated and he made his first team league debut for Burnley in the Championship.

that was about money....I was on about getting the most out of him this season...getting many saying he should be in the EUROs

Why?

Because I think Sharp is more mobile, has more pace, makes better runs, creates more space and as a result, offers more of a threat at the top level. Also, he's less injury prone.

Lambert's skillset and aerial ability will be very useful in some games, but I can't see us (for example) sticking him up front against Man U away and expecting him to chase down everything for 90 minutes, whereas I can see Sharp doing exactly that. It will also depend on who else we sign though, if we get someone mobile with aerial ability in, Lambert will be less used, if we get more nippy finishers in, Sharp might get phased out.

I'm also looking at when we signed them and how the evolution of the team might progress. There's not going to be much room for one-paced, relatively immobile players who can't beat anyone in the Prem side.

So he should second highest english scorer in the PL would make that a no brainer (you'd of thought)

No reason why we can't manage Rickie like that though...after all by his own admission he is the shape of his life and fitness management is Nigel's thing.

How did Grant Holt become the Premier League's 2nd highest English scorer last season (8th overall in the League with 15 league goals)? Not that I like to compare Holt with Lambert (as I think Lambert has more to his game than Holt), but both lack pace.

Just checking we're talking about Billy Sharp here?...didn't see much evidence of the first two from Sharp last season and how many games has Lambert missed for saints through injury the last three seasons?

How many of Holt's league goals last season do you think came down to beating a Premier League defender for pace?

A number of Lambert come about due to his clever movement away from centre-backs and onto fullback's to beat them in the air at the far post on diagonals. No matter how good a defender the likes of Ashley Cole are, Lambert will beat him in the air every time. Pace also not required for his superb free-kicks and penalty taking ability, nor his long range shots and good passing, first touch and vision.
