Same in Hampshire- going to cost an absolute fortune and far as I can see no real benefit. And Labour have done no cost of change analysis just wouldn’t it be good if changed a boundary here and there 

Seems a text book exercise on pissing away tax payers money on the basis of proposals not fully assessed and thought through.

Depends on which area and who is asked. Gloucestershire 6 LAs to roll into 1, making England’s third biggest LA overall. Positive cross-party support although the Reform Leader here made some surprisingly articulate comments about the ambitious timescale and people probably at risk of redundancy having to carry out the transition. Gloucester CC less happy by far.

Devon where my folks live mixed, Exeter, Plymouth and Torbay quite happy with it, Devon CC furious.

Rural Devonian (adopted) here... Yep, most people outside the three conurbations are scratching their heads this morning (to put it politely).

It's absolutely nothing to do with Labour attempting to seize control of key areas, rather than doing what's best for residents, of course...

Isn't one of the drivers supposed to be about rolling up all the individual LGPS schemes into fewer larger ones and then incentivising them to invest in UK businesses?  Thought I read that somewhere but could be wrong.  Far as I'm concerned it's a shit idea and I don't like it.  I don't want a sodding Mayor either.

These things always go in cycles of gradual centralisation followed by explosive decentralisation into much smaller units. It's the story of the universe.

Given there is little overlap in services between county councils and districts there isn't a lot of scope for de-duplication other than in areas such as HR administration, and most councils are already cut to the bone on staffing, ( despite what some media sources might tell you ). Also, the transition costs will be way higher than they will admit to, as they were in the 1990s version of LGR.

The big mistake in this current round, imo, is that the new authorities are being stitched together along the boundaries of the existing districts, rather than looking to create new more logical units drawn on effectively a blank canvass. In our case, Dolphinholme in the Forest of Bowland, is split between Wyre and Lancaster councils because the river running through it is the Borough boundary. The new authority layout merges Wyre with Blackpool, and will inevitably tend to focus things westwards towards Blackpool, which has very little in common with the areas towards the M6 and further east. It would make much more sense to make a new boundary west of the A6 and put Doplhinholne and it's surroundings totally within Lancaster, which is the nearest major centre. But then again, this was never about making sense.

It's not as if the new authorities would even match the Parliamentary boundaries. There is no logic to the proposal whatsoever.

I guess it might be more simple in some areas but Hampshire will have a new North Hampshire authority created the will need all the IT systems etc of Mid so feels like diseconomies of scale rather than the usual logic applied in commercial mergers and acquisitions. The money will no doubt be spent on PWC consultants and even less for services. From my research (admittedly minimal) I could see no cost of change and ROI numbers. Add in councillors egos and can see a train wreck of non-consensus
