Why cross the channel in the first place if you're in a desperate situation?  Why not stay in one of the EU countries you cross to get to the Channel?

Edited for accuracy. Although tbf his mum could be one of the flag-holding grannies the other side of the bridge on that clip.

Think family links, language and historical ties are the main reasons. Being homeless, on your own and in a country where you don't speak the language is still a desperate situation.

I hadnt realised until I was doing some research on another matter that there have been at least two Aliens Acts introduced into Law in this country.

The first was in 1792 and was introduced to quell the number of immigrants coming into this country from France as a consequence of the French Revolution, as well as displaced Huguenots arriving in this sceptered isle due to religious pressure from the Catholic Church.

Interesting to learn that our friend (!!) Mr Farage is descended from Huguenot stock but his forefathers probably arrived in a wooden raft, containing a supply of decent ale, rather than a rubber dingy.

The second Aliens Act was introduced in 1905 when thousands of Jews were forced out of Russia due to the Progroms over there.

Since then there have been protests against Irish and Caribbean/Asian immigration but no sign of a modern Aliens Act.

No doubt copies of the old Legislation will be dusted off when Nige (or Rupes) and his merry crew win the next election.

Good stuff, deport him on the day on the sentence ending and permanent ban.

Dozens could have been killed, his age or what he saw in Sudan is irrelevant. Worst of all are the smugglers. Blatantly don’t care about any of the people crammed onto those inflatables.

you know and I know he wont be going anywhere.. Will be out in 9 months and straight into a HMO with a Deliveroo job lined up on day 1.

You have to wonder why he is not on a plane tomorrow...but there we are

On the second sentence, no pun intended, he does have a sentence. His coverage under the Refugee Convention is limited now by this offence and sentence. The policy tools are there, it’s up to the judge/tribunal by the time he gets out to finish off the job,

I’m sure his brief will do the whole ‘South Sudan is awful, he’s seen people decapitated etc etc, dangerous’, ‘the smuggling gangs coerced him to drive the raft’ but we know that’s BS, a 19 year old lad driving a wreck without an MOT, driving licence, and ten passengers crammed illegally in it would have the book thrown at him by our cops, and it’s no different. In fact, it’s far worse given the risks and volume of people involved. 

If the tribunal or judge fuck it up later on then they deserve the pile on they’ll no doubt receive. I don’t want to see him here after his sentence.

Dates back to the 16th Century particularly the St Bartholemew's Day massacre. Got quite a bit of a mention in one of the recent  Rest is History pods on Elizabeth I.

Obviously another person fleeing for their life. 2 yr and 3 months in jail for recklessly putting the lives of over 100 people at risk. Less than Lucy Connolly got for a tweet by the same judicial system. One of the guys at the Henry Novak protest got 3 years for throwing a cone and metal pan at the police. Are they serious? Those people smugglers will be really concerned by this…not
