You should watch the movie ‘The Swimmers’, gives a good insight in how people end up in these sort of situations. If you are fleeing war, persecution or grinding poverty you are in a desperate situation so won’t care for legalities and most probably don’t know the full risks involved in the crossing.

I have sympathy for anyone desperate enough to attempt the English Channel in one of those dinghies.

Why cross the channel in the first place if you're in a desperate situation?  Why not stay in one of the EU countries you cross to get to the Channel?

Edited for accuracy. Although tbf his mum could be one of the flag-holding grannies the other side of the bridge on that clip.

No income for local dental practices either way.

Think family links, language and historical ties are the main reasons. Being homeless, on your own and in a country where you don't speak the language is still a desperate situation.

I hadnt realised until I was doing some research on another matter that there have been at least two Aliens Acts introduced into Law in this country.

The first was in 1792 and was introduced to quell the number of immigrants coming into this country from France as a consequence of the French Revolution, as well as displaced Huguenots arriving in this sceptered isle due to religious pressure from the Catholic Church.

Interesting to learn that our friend (!!) Mr Farage is descended from Huguenot stock but his forefathers probably arrived in a wooden raft, containing a supply of decent ale, rather than a rubber dingy.

The second Aliens Act was introduced in 1905 when thousands of Jews were forced out of Russia due to the Progroms over there.

Since then there have been protests against Irish and Caribbean/Asian immigration but no sign of a modern Aliens Act.

No doubt copies of the old Legislation will be dusted off when Nige (or Rupes) and his merry crew win the next election.

Good stuff, deport him on the day on the sentence ending and permanent ban.

Dozens could have been killed, his age or what he saw in Sudan is irrelevant. Worst of all are the smugglers. Blatantly don’t care about any of the people crammed onto those inflatables.

you know and I know he wont be going anywhere.. Will be out in 9 months and straight into a HMO with a Deliveroo job lined up on day 1.

You have to wonder why he is not on a plane tomorrow...but there we are

On the second sentence, no pun intended, he does have a sentence. His coverage under the Refugee Convention is limited now by this offence and sentence. The policy tools are there, it’s up to the judge/tribunal by the time he gets out to finish off the job,

I’m sure his brief will do the whole ‘South Sudan is awful, he’s seen people decapitated etc etc, dangerous’, ‘the smuggling gangs coerced him to drive the raft’ but we know that’s BS, a 19 year old lad driving a wreck without an MOT, driving licence, and ten passengers crammed illegally in it would have the book thrown at him by our cops, and it’s no different. In fact, it’s far worse given the risks and volume of people involved.

If the tribunal or judge fuck it up later on then they deserve the pile on they’ll no doubt receive. I don’t want to see him here after his sentence.

Dates back to the 16th Century particularly the St Bartholemew's Day massacre. Got quite a bit of a mention in one of the recent  Rest is History pods on Elizabeth I.

Obviously another person fleeing for their life. 2 yr and 3 months in jail for recklessly putting the lives of over 100 people at risk. Less than Lucy Connolly got for a tweet by the same judicial system. One of the guys at the Henry Novak protest got 3 years for throwing a cone and metal pan at the police. Are they serious? Those people smugglers will be really concerned by this…not

Apparently British men need to get ready for war. Maybe an idea should be that we use all those asylum seekers, send them to war in exchange for being given citizenship.

Depends if it was in French waters (presumably if the French were still on board?)?

But fingers crossed. Deportation would be funny.

It is technically a crime on both sides of the Channel. Imagine him being banged up in a French jail.

I will refuse on the grounds that Burnham is not my prime minister.

Weller had it right when he wrote Little Boy Soilders nearly 50 years ago, nothings changed

Just you and Gloucester Saint? whereabouts will you open fire from?
How do you plan on sinking the boat after you have fired upon him? capsizing it, or weigh it down with something?
Why is he still at sea now anyway, I thought this happened yesterday.

It hardly endangering life - if there was an emergency worker in the boat (which i couldn’t see) they would have stepped into his boat. If they had refused to let the emergency worker on a different matter. Storm in a teacup and all politically motivated. Bet he gets a Jail sentence longer than the guy who captained the mega boat and endangered over one hundred lives

Absolutely no surprise that you are defending the criminal grifter.

I hope he gets a long sentence because he is repeat offender, certainly not the hero the easily led think he is.

I didn’t comment on the rights and wrong of what he did. I said that I didn’t believe he was endangering life and that an action like that shouldn’t result in a heavy punishment. If he had slashed the boat and then stopped the French worker from entering his boat or the neighbouring lifeboat I would agree that is dangerous but that doesn’t appear to be the case.  I agree the action in itself won’t reduce illegal immigration but some people might say that actions like this are intended to get media attention to keep the issue at the top of the news stories, which seems to be the case

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said a 37-year-old man of no fixed abode had been arrested after a "boat that had an emergency responder on board" was damaged in the Channel.

He was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage with intent to endanger life, "destroying ships" under the Aviation and Maritime Security Act 1990 and "conduct endangering ships" under the Merchant Shipping Act 1995. He remains in custody.

The dopey twat.  He seems like a good egg, though.

In July 2016, Thomas pleaded guilty to attempting to kidnap a man at knifepoint. Thomas, along with two others, burst into the man's house armed with knives, shouting "You're coming with us". The group falsely alleged that the man had stolen £10,000 worth of drugs from them.

The judge, who sentenced Thomas to two years in prison, called the incident "extraordinarily frightening" and said it was matched only by its "stupidity".  The judge told Thomas and his accomplices "Go and serve your sentences, learn the lesson and for God's sake don't get involved in anything as stupid again".

That worked well.....

A bit simple and easily-led?  Don't realise that you've been conned?

Well we have just the fundraiser for you to get behind!...

The buckets are out already, the GoFundMe has launched, roll up, roll up, Tommy and Danny need more of your money.

And so the grift continues.

It's the same as wankers in the green lobby who lie in the road or twat about near our military bases. All of them deserve punishment and they are all pricks imo.

They are stopping the general public and military from going about their business. The is not the same level of disruption compared to a single empty boat being slashed and a French worker having to step off onto the neighbouring boat. Punishment needs to be disproportionate to the action or crime. He should be punished if the law says so but it needs to be proportionate and not politically motivated

I just think if you start slashing dinghys in the water then you run the risk of getting prosecuted. Any idiot would know that.

You mean like the two years and 3 months for the guy who captained the mega boat with over 100 illegal migrants in it and risked all their lives and his. The same judiciary surely wanted to deter others from risking the lives of hundreds of people but the sentence doesn’t. If you compare the two, this guy who slashed the boat should even be getting a jail sentence in this context.
