My point is that P&O has been what we now call a brand so despite there being different firms with P&O in the title the general public will think of P&O as connected but I understand your point that the P&O cruise firm are a good employer !

P&O cruises and ferries are distinctly different companies. What P&O Ferries did to their staff has no connection what so ever with P&O cruises, as they are separately owned companies without any connection to one an other. P&O Cruises is thoroughly embedded into Carnival as their overall owner. It's kinda like kicking up a fuss if Microsoft took us over, because you didn't like what Apple had done.

P&O Cruises are the proper boats which leave Southampton and go all over Europe and the world, P&O ferries are the noddy lot who base themselves out of skatesville.

Oh dear, do not under any circumstances tell anyone in Kent, but both P & O's stand for "Peninsular and Oriental". I have avoided the ferries but will try another cruise as they are totally different companies. Not sure if anyone outside Kent knew that 😀

I have had shares in Carnival PLC for twenty years. They entitle me to a useful on board credit whenever I cruise on one of their brands.

I also used to have shares in P&O Ferries until they were taken over by Dubai Ports. They used to give me a useful discount when I used to travel several times a year to France.

Believe me, there is no connection between them.

Of course I knew its origins. You don't spend hundreds of nights on its cruise ships and ferries without knowing something of the brand and its history. As I have said above, I am or have been a shareholder in both enterprises. 

The Peninsular bit came first with the Oriental added later. The four quartered colours on the house flag combine the yellow and red of Spain with the blue and white of the Portuguese royal colours. The founders Brodie McGhie Willcox and Arthur Anderson are still recognised in the names of bars on their cruise ships.
