Morgan Guilavogui has agreed personal terms with Saints and didn't participate in Lens training today according to L'Equipe

Looks like he is coming in, Lens are just lining up a new signing in parallel by the sounds of the French reports

Right winger. 6 foot 2. 6 goals in 25 appearances on loan for St Pauli in the Bundesliga last season, plus 1 more in the cup. 

Couldn't get in the side the season before that at Lens. 

2 in 15 games for Guinea. 

He's 27 so they can't say he's one for the future. Dibling replacement so would need to come straight in and perform, and be better than Fraser to improve the squad.

Not sure if he is the " right kind of winger", and of course the recruitment people know better than me (!!) but I'd choose Edozie over him right now. Of course he may be of similar quality and save us some money, which seems the likely reason for this to happen.

Hopefully he'll be great for us......

27 years old, 8 goals and 3 assists in his 62 career appearances. Marvellous. 

Should have kept Sulemana.

 

Edit; the website I looked at only had top flight stats, not Ligue 2.

6 goals and 2 assists in Bundesliga last season in 25 games.

As a comparison to a player we know Nathan Tella was 2 goals and 4 assists in 27 games.

On the face of it..

Pro's: 

You'd have to imagine Will Still knows him and has signed the deal off. Must see something in him. (however he went out on loan a month after WS joined the Lens as manager...)

Probably relatively cheap. 

Cons:

Seemingly everything else.

Right but no one is calling for signings just for the sake of it. They want players that are near the best in the division for the most part.

Morgan Guilavogui spent the 2024/25 season on loan at St. Pauli from Lens before making the move a permanent transfer this summer. However, the Guinean forward won’t actually play for the Bundesliga club again…

Guilavogui joined Pauli ahead of their Bundesliga return in 2024 on a season-long loan from Lens in France, having previously played for Paris FC, hometown club Toulon and also in the Saint-Étienne youth academy.

The forward went on to impress for Alexander Blessin’s side, scoring six goals and providing two assists in 25 league appearances as the top-flight new boys ensured another year in the big time. Only a two-month layoff for an ankle injury prevented him from contributing more.

* Lens decided to activate the buy-back option from St.Pauli…I wonder why? Probably because good old SR/Spors had £42m burning a hole in the proverbial collective pocket and they fancied some of that. To be fair, while he’s not prolific, he’s not afraid to shoot and does score some nice goals, plus he does appear to have some pace about him *

Would be interesting to know which of our transfers Spors has actually been responsible for. We know he was definitely responsible for the Stephens three year contract but there was a suggestion this week that he had nothing to do with Downs or Quarshie.

If nothing else, this is a man who has not been poisoned by Martinball.

I quite like this personally (providing he isn't our only attacking signing). Physical player who St Pauli fans like (and wanted to keep) - if i'm not mistaken, he was amongst their top scorers in the Bundesliga. Contributed goals to a team tasked with staying in the top division in Germany. 

International experience, top flight experience both in Germany and this season he has some, albeit very few, minutes in Ligue 1. 

Him + Rak-Sakyi would be some nice depth on the right, allow Fraser to continue his utility player role, and likely doesn't cost much either. That, plus he likely knows how WS wants to play. 

I'm all for scrutiny, but we have very little to go on, other than this, a goal every 4 games in his career, and soem versatility across the front 3. 

Obvs, if we were prem, I'd perhaps be less positive, but I don't think this is as disappointing as some are making out. And, as ever, he might be inspired in a Saints shirt. Or not. We will find out I guess.

Putting an objective hat on, he had a productive loan last season in a Top European League. St Pauli saw enough in him to sign him, then Lens bought him back which was odd - and by all accounts, St Pauli fans were sad that it happened as they saw him as one of their main attacking threats.

I think the negativity around this stems from the views of Lens fans who can't stand him nor do they rate him at all, and were infuriated when they bought him back. However, they're basing that on his season(s) prior to St Pauli and he may well have developed a lot in that year and is finally fulfilling potential.

It's not the 'ready made' name I thought we'd go for, nor that we need, but we're clearly watching the pennies and he does add to our attack.

Looks a decent enough signing but definitely a cheaper option that, along with Quarshie and Downs, flys in the face of Spors' supposed philiosophy of a preference to domestic signings.

He had a good season in the Bundesliga so I think the outrage is unjustified but we definitely need to start bringing in some known quantities along the lines of an Azaz or Fellows.

I thought that of Sugawara and BBD and they were possibly one of the worst players, pound for pound, that i've seen in a saints shirt.

Getting some quality in the 10 is what we deseperatley need to not skimp out on.

As long as we don't give him a four deal. Hopefully a two year contract with an option for a third year
