mine in no order 

Joe Calzaghie - 46-0 record never beaten, world champion for 11 years an incredibly skilful boxer. Some will say he never beat any big names in their prime but he had some big names on his CV and his performance against Jeff Lacy was one of the best I’ve ever seen considering no one gave him a chance 

Matt Frazer - 5 times CrossFit world champion. Most guys don’t even podium twice this guy won in 5 years in a row. There is an argument that the winner of the CrossFit games is the fittest person on earth, hard to disagree with the reasoning of it

Franceso Totti - probably wouldn’t be top of anyone else’s list but loyal to Roma a wonderful player. Used to love watching him back in the day, his documentary is a great watch.

Micheal Jordan’s about how many shots he missed but that’s why he wins should be given to every kid when they start a sport, truly inspiring 

one of the reasons I’m so in awe of Matt Fraser is because he knew his weakness and work liked fuck on them until the were no longer weaknesses. There is a story about him struggling with rowing in one of the games workouts so he spent a year rowing every day on top Of his other training to be better. That mindset is incredible

The mental thing about Ronnie is the notion that whilst he’s already the greatest snooker player that ever lived, just imagine how many more trophies he could have won if he could have always got on top of his demons.

There’s not many sports men and women that good that you can still say they underachieved slightly.

Exactly this. Him, Woods, and countless others, were the best at that they did despite having various issues. To have achieved what they have against that backdrop is remarkable.

Shane Warne, incredible cricketer but also a top pundit, always very fair in his analysis.

Muhamed Ali, growing up in the 70's he was perhaps the most famous man on the planet.

Jessica Ennis, for that Saturday, as the poster girl for London 2012 she must have been under enormous pressure, will never forget her medal ceremony, goosebumps when the National anthem kicked in.

Went to a charity dinner a while back and Shane Warne was the guest. He did about an hour of stories and Q&A. He was brilliant, really funny. Chatted to him after and let him get a photo with me

Having met him, I can confirm that Sir Steve Redgrave is a) an excellent bloke and b) an absolute mountain of a bloke.

Gus Fraser was our tour guide in Barbados for the Test in 2004 - top fella, always liked him as bowler. Not much smaller a mountain than Redgrave. Told us over dinner that Shane Warne used to pay for his own flights to play for Hampshire and that Bransgrove had said Shane was an unbelievable fella as well as cricketer. So lucky to have him play for and captain the county.

Met and talked with Sir Colin Cowdrey for about an hour when our local pub re-opened. Asked him about what it was like to face Lillee and Thomson at the WACA having come out of retirement in winter of 1974 in his 40s. Aussies thought he was still a class player and was a world class, stylish batsman in the 1950s and 60s.

I walked past Shane Warne as he was coming out of Staples in the West Quay bit opposite McDonalds.

One of the broadsheets printed a rumour after we moved to the Rose Bowl that the Hedge End restaurant would get a call coming up to the lunch break if Hampshire were at home with order for two buns, fries and no burgers. Shane’s lunch was allegedly a chip butty. 🥪 

No idea if true or not. Same article said that during the difficult first season when we were relegated at Northlands Rd, there was a drinking club called Australia & USA = Warne, Udal, Smith and Aymes. 

When you’re THAT good, it doesn’t matter and what a brilliant player.

On a slightly related theme, I once went on a stag do which started at Northlands Road and was gatecrashed by Aymes, Smith and a couple of others. Absolute carnage.
