If we are both in CCC next season who would fair better?

Saints

no money

possibly financially stabilised by then

probably much same squad

no money for signings

experience of this league

squad would have finished on high if stay up

Skates

parachute payment

huge debts

poor home support

possibly some money for signings

demotivated squad following relegation

surely lose -David James, Sol Campbell, Crouch, Glen Johnson -possibly others

Skate could offload another 30 million in players, we're scratching around for 30 bob.

Sorry Nick, I don't think I could cope with them coming down and whipping us...which even with the loss of those players you mention...they would do at the moment.

I can't see our squad being the same next season - we're probably going to lose half the first team anyway...to be replaced with what???

Final Straws and all that...christ it doesn't bear thinking about...

On the same subject though, we should take a leaf out of Bournemouth's book regarding how to get yourself out of this situation - shame is, by the time we wake up it will probably be too late.

depends how much they need to pay off their debts - if they lose a whole first team and have to use any cash raised to pay debts they may not be strong.

But at least they will be able to stage world cup finals in their stadium!

why - I am sure of you were a fan of theirs, with their debt etc you would be talking about administration, all players leaving, owner cashing in on sales not re-investing etc and perhaps concerned about how portsmouth would do?

If the Skates did come down to our level and we managed to stay in this league by the skin of our teeth, then they would beat us easily with the team we have.

Just think of the teams that have beaten us at SMS this season.

Also as someone has already said, most of our first team wont be here next season anyway.

Sad times indeed.

If we do end up playing them I can't see any of our players apart from maybe Davis, Euell and Perry being up for a derby day at Fratton. We'd get slaughtered with the likes of Surman, Lallana, Schneiderlin, Skacel and McGoldrick going missing when we need them most.

why cos about football?

why do you feel the need to criticise everything? its a discussion forum - for chatting about football issues.

Alpine cannot discuss a reasoned debate only criticise, he may have a few decent points sometimes but it's how he delivers it that annoys posters. As for who would fare better, pompey without a doubt. They may be in debt and will probably lose some players but they will have parachute payments and I'm sure they will have a lot stronger squad than us. We will be lucky if we are still in this league next season.

TBF we have done well at home against the better teams this season and we can assume pompey will be one of the better teams, however will we still be in this league next season?

Pompey have something like 14 players out of contract in the summer (including Kanu/Campbell/etc) - and will lose most of those whether they go down or not as their wage bill is simply too big for them to sustain

they are also £40 million or more in debt still - so even if they stay up they'll have to sell players like Kranjkar and Crouch to raise money

if they do go down they will lose nearly all of their current squad - so I'll think they will struggle in the CCC if it comes to it

I'm not really bothered, most of them are over rated and ****e. I'd quite happily see Surman, Lallana, Schneiderlin, Skacel and McGoldrick all sold in the summer.

But we don't have anything better or could afford anything better. I think Lallana is played out of position, maybe we should try him behind the front two and drop McGoldrick. I think Surman has lost confidence but he has potential as does Schneiderlain. Skacel wants to go anyway so he will be gone in the summer but until then why don't we play him on the left of midfield, that's his best position imo and he proved it in our play off season with plenty of assists (8 along with Bale).

I know it's hypothetical but they will probably be two leagues above us next season.

They would fair better as most other relegated teams have kept most of their team for at least two seasons, replacing leavers with quality and have shown ambition to get back into the top flight. If they are still in the CCC five seasons later, it might be more of a fair comparison.

What a f*cking ridiculous question, this cannot be serious, surely? We probably won't even fare that well in League One next season, let alone the CCC.

p.s. I do assume you mean 'fare' rather than 'fair' (as stated) as if the latter it may well be the other way round of course (bigger fairground, less likely for the staff/punters to be robbed etc...)

I like to add statistics to these arguments, so here's the performance of every team that's been relegated from the Prem since 2000 (at least until they leave the CCC again, whether up or down).

X indicates how many seasons since they came down before changing divisions again, P = Promoted, R=Relegated.

2007

Sheff U 9th.

Charlton 12th.

Watford 6th.

2006

Brum 2nd PX

W Brom 4th, 1st PXX

Sunderland 1st PX

2005

Palace 6th, 12th, 5th

Norwich 9th, 16th, 17th,

Saints 12th, 6th, 20th,

2004

Leic 15th, 16th, 19th, 22nd RXXXX

Leeds 14th, 5th, 24 RXXX

Wolves 9th, 7th, 5th, 7th.

2003

W Ham 4th, 6th PXX

W Brom 2nd PX

Sunderland 3rd, 1st PXX

2002

Ips 7th, 5th, 3rd, 15th, 14th, 8th.

Derby 18th, 20th, 4th, 20th, 3rd PXXXXX

Leic 2nd PX

2001

Man C 1st PX

Cov 11th, 20th, 12th, 19th, 8th, 17th, 20th.

Bradford 15th, 19th, 23rd RELXXX

2000

Wimb 8th, 9th, 10th, 24th RELXXXX

Sheff Wed 17th, 20th, 22nd RELXXX

Watford 9th, 14th, 13th, 16th, 18th, 3rd PXXXXXX

Simple fact is that of the last 12 teams to be relegated from the Prem, only 3 (all in 2006) have gone back up - two at the first attempt and one at the second. And whilst 3 went back up, 2 of the teams relegated since 2004 went down into League One.

If we go back another year though, all 3 of the 2002/3 season Prem relegated sides bounced back within 2 years.

Overall :

24 Prem teams relegated since 2000 (not inc 2008/9 teams as the following season isn't finished)

10 have been promoted back up to the Prem (Derby and Watford being the only teams to take more than 2 seasons to do so)

5 have been relegated further (only Sheff Wed have come back so far).

9 are still in the CCC.

Spin it how you like...

Oh, and I don't want to worry anyone, but you can also see that all of the teams who've come down from the Prem and been relegated further were relegated in their 3rd or 4th season after the relegation. (Leicester 4 years, Leeds 3, Bradford 3, Wimbledon 4, Sheff Wed 3).

We're in season 4.

Congratulations on finding any excuse to have dig at Alpine

Well, in fairness I did point out that his question was stupid. Not surprised by the reaction.

But then, NickG does seem to be one of that ever-diminishing group of fans who think somehow the CCC League Table is lying about the state of SFC...

What's this got to do with the title of the thread?

post is meant to be bit of interest/fun to those who want to talk about it, ignored if not - not every post has to be insulting/negative.

As for your second paragraph you are just, once again, making things up to play to your pantomime villain image.

Please try not turn every thread into arguments for the sake of it.

and it was you questioning why the forum has got quieter?

THE daftest question EVER posted on this site...

majority of other posters managed to express a football opinion without insulting - there are many threads on here that don't interest me or I think are irrelevant - guess what I don't post on them!

neither of us will be in the championship next season :-(

Nope. We'll be in the third division and the Skates will survive in the Premiership. Why not let's have a nice bit of fun predicting whether we can manage a higher position in the third than they can in the first, next season.

Can find any source of fun in that, all too much of a depressing thought:(

I was just quoting along similar lines to Nick's post:-

"post is meant to be bit of interest/fun to those who want to talk about it,"

Personally, I'm consoling myself with the optimistic thought that the probability is that Lowe, Wilde and all the other charlatans will be gone when we go down, so there is a silver lining to console me. ;)
