Yeah... You are aware that you've made at least 20 posts on here over the course of the day and that was my first, right? That one's called irony, Alpine.
-
As I said, you have no understanding of what satire is. Jim Davidson takes the ****, do you consider him a satirist? Do you consider the great political satire of the last 50 years, for example, David Frost at his peak, to be simply "taking the ****" without highlighting serious matters? For that matter, if you think that people ridiculing your statements to be unacceptable as there are soldiers mentioned, do you also believe that political satirists are attacking the concept of democracy? Or just some silly people saying silly things? As you don't understand what satire actually is, here's a very simple quote from a simple source: How are you getting on finding a single example of me criticising you before by the way? And "a high brow philosophical exercise"? Really? This? All I've done is tell you what satire is, as it was going way over your head.
-
I don't remember ever responding to one of your posts before, but if you can give me a couple of examples, I'll concede the point. As I said before, some of the most brilliant minds regularly satirise situations to make a serious point. It's quite the opposite of disrespectful, it emphasises how serious that person thinks the situation is. I genuinely think satire goes over your head. I would say that your original post linking football to soldier and their family's suffering is far more trivial nd offensive. Wiltshire's post highlights this.
-
That's pretty weak. I would say your comments are trivial and he's highlighting how you are dealing with the subject. I don't think any negative opinion of soldiers comes across. As for using humour, I would say that humour has been a very effective way of tackiling serious issues for very many years. By pointing out how ridiculous something is, it becomes clearer what is serious. Satirising idiocy is a very good way of making good sense clear. There's nothing here for "his own ends". He makes some very good points very well, but I think they've gone over your head. I would say his point is far from trivial.
-
Actually, the point of satire is to highlight a ridiculous viewpoint by agreeing with it, which he did pretty well. The topic of the humour is very clearly not soldiers being killed. The topic of humour is your viewpoint, and it's pretty lame to try to deflect from your own humiliation by pretending he's ridiculing the soldiers.

So Dave Benson Phillips is the new name Stupidromseysaint came up with? Brilliant. -
The thing is that Americans aren't Canadians, but calling English people British is actually correct. It really doesn't make any difference. I can't believe so many people are so petty and whiny, is your self-image so fragile?

I was going to post the same. Junction 9 works in this general area (dishwashers etc, not Norway).

They were all grown ups, knowingly doing illegal things right in front of the police. Seems fair enough.
-
Yup, Scotland fans should get behind England and Saints fans should get behind Portsmouth. Very silly to hope your local rivals do badly.
-
I agree with the sentiments on this thread. That's why I always support our local rivals in any football match.

Bringing home the bacon...
norwaysaint replied to LVSaint's topic in Overseas Saints / Supporters Groups
Back when I first emigrated, I used to bring back loads of stuff like that every time. I even had to unpack my hand luggage at customs once once, which was packed with bacon and other stuff. It was at the England end though, never got stopped in Norway, which is non-EU. Never bother now though. -
Zack and Miri make a porno This was a very unoriginal story and the main character was just a carbon copy of a million others who'd been played better. A couple of laughs, but not enough. 6/10 Superbad Just really poor. All been done before by people better at it. 5/10 The Hurt Locker I was disappointed. I found it pretty hard to get involved and didn't feel like it really went anywhere unexpected or interesting. 7/10 District 9 I thought this was a lot of fun and had some great ideas and themes. 8/10 Avatar I finally got around to seeing this on DVD. It was better than I expected. The story was nothing new, but there were a few good ideas. I only got annoyed by the regular shots that were clearly just set up to look effective in 3D. Just another blockbuster really, but I expected it to be worse. 7/10

Well then you've got to go back the next step haven't you. Then, the British have to apologise again. I take it you know the history of why there is a situation in Northern Ireland in the first place. What happened on Bloody Sunday was a one sided attack, that's been recognised now, don't try to justify it.
-
Makes you proud to be British, doesn't it.
-
Or more sensibly, why doesn't SteveGrunt unlock the thread he started about it and people can post problems on there, then they'll also be able to see if the same problem has already been reported and if any help was given.

I'm pretty sure that map is from the Spitting Image book from about 1985, God knows why I remember that.

I find I've got no need to pay the five pounds. I like being restricted to three posts a day and would be disappointed with myself if I spent more time posting on here, I've never had the need to pm anybody either. I just can't see what I'd be paying for. I haven't missed being able to start threads and if I make a mistake I can't edit, it's not the end of the world.
-
Yeah, there was an article about it in my local paper. http://fotball.bt.no/england/article171541.ece

Netherlands not to get out of their group, New Zealand to get out of theirs. Portugal to beat Brazil but to lose at least one of their other group matches. South Africa to lose every match. Switzerland not to score a goal.

Bit harsh on DSM I thought, surely it's Eddie who just gives infractions to anyone he doesn't like due to an utter inability to understand satire. I first came onto this place or its equivelant about 9 years ago. To be honest it's pretty much the same now as it was then. People just move on and everyone thinks it was better when they and their mates were the ones posting regularly. It wasn't.
-
If you're spending two thousand pounds on a telly, then telly has become just a bit too important in your life.
-
Yeah, except neither of those posters ever really post in TMS and neither of them have ever started a thread there and neither of them have ever posted anything even similar to that. Otherwise I see your point though.
