Jan Signing who would you get?

We are a level 4 club and seem more than happy to bend over when a level 1-3 wants/needs our players

We should be looking to take the best players from level 5-6 clubs (AFCB, Norwich, Brighton) or simply continue buying relative unknowns from overseas (France needs tapping more)

I would expect us to use Puel's in-depth knowledge of the French leagues for our next acquisitions.

Bad call, he's a talentless donkey. Only in the dutch league could he score as many as he does.

Like Pelle and Tadic you mean? or Suarez, van Nistelrooy and van Hoojdonk maybe?

The donkey has scored 10 goals in 18 for France U21s. Anyway a lot of clubs looking at him given he's talentless.

A striker, a goalscorer, no idea who though. Not Behrahino too much baggage now, Ings is not really a striker, he's more of all round forward/second striker.

We have the players to create plenty of chances, we just didn't play that great against a very good Chelsea side who were able to sit on a lead. But overall we've been creating a lot of chances but not putting them away (think Leicester away, Inter away etc.), even Austin who's probably our best striker and finisher.

We need to unearth a Pahars from somewhere, or get the next Aguero or Suarez before their move to big clubs. That real quality striker who'll we will have for a couple of years. We seem to do quite well finding the young up and coming talents if they are midfielders/defenders/wingers (Van Dijk, Cedric, Boufal, Redmond, Wanyama, Mane etc.) but our recent out and out strikers are all a bit older, later bloomers (Pelle, Austin, Long, Osvlado)

We need to find the striker equivalent of a Boufal or Tadic or Cedric or Van Dijk, that up and coming 21-22 year old, someone like Milik (who went to Napoli this summer) would have fit the bill.

Aside that another centre midfielder to improve on Clasie/Davis who could also play if Romeu was injured and Fonte's long term replacement but they probably aren't January signings.

I'd not expect any Jan signings though.

Tom Rogic at Celtic. Strong bodied no. 10 who has a habit of scoring 'worldies' and would be a great fit for Saints. Still in early twenties yet an experienced international and improving all the time. Would lose him to Asian qualifiers ( like Yoshi ) but get in before the crowd. We seem to have a trusted relationship with Celtic so this is realistic, unlike M. Dembele who won't end up with us, unfortunately.

Why do people think a striker is the solution? If you don't move the ball quick enough and create clear openings, then it doesn't matter who is up front. That was the case yesterday, just a little too slow in the buildup and it allowed Chelsea to regroup and block the avenues - so the service was never really there for Austin.

We'll score goals if we move the ball quicker, not sure why people want to reinvent the wheel after yesterday. We're not a bad side as it stands.

Clearly the squad is short of goal-scorers.

Long is a middling-at-best Premier League player and Jay Rod is crocked. That leaves Austin who is not exactly dynamic and is also probably, middling-at-best over any sort of prolonged period.

The weakest areas of our squad are striker and right back, so it's quite sensible that people want to sign a striker.

Er Micky Quinn, is he reliable as source? , as far as I can tell Mickey Quinn has gone, van dijk is a good Southampton player + Liverpool buy Southampton players, so they are buying Van Dijk. Also they bought two new centre-backs this year.

I agree with the above as well, don't think they can afford him, he should be upwards of £50 million and that is Man City/Chelsea/Utd/PSG/Barca/Real territory, I'm hoping when he does go it's outside the league

Van Dijk is good, really really good even but he's not that good that he should become the most expensive defender in the history of the sport, lets be real here. 35m, around same fee as what guys like Bailly and Mustafi were sold for would be a good fee and a ****load of money for a defender. Stones is just a exception cause he's English.

Incorrect. Stones cost what he did not because he's English but because he plays for an English club, this inflation applies equally to both foreign and English players.

Think of it this way, two players equal in every way from position, age, ability, length of contract and importance to the team, but one plays for a club with an annual revenue of 200m and the other for a club with 100m revenue. The players wouldn't cost the same, as the same transfer fee would be of much less value to the club with the higher revenue, they would demand a fee that adequately reflects the player's importance to them.

Van Dijk is better than Stones, more important to us than Stones was to Everton, is on a much longer contract and both clubs' annual revenues are about the same.

Not only would he not be cheaper, he would actually cost a lot more to buy.

Of course it matters that Stones is English. As a English team you want the best English players cause just like a lot of people here, most fans prefer "own" players above foreign players when possible. There arent a lot of those so that jacks up the price, plus clubs in England have to deal with the homegrown player rule, which jacks up the price even more in comparison to other leagues.

And sure in general players in England are worth relatively more and more to English clubs because of the high revenues. High revenues and high wages and selling to your opponent who you compete directly against jacks up the price but saying it doesnt matter if a player is foreign or not just isnt true, it doesnt make sense if it didnt and Stones wouldnt have been more expensive as for example Sané, who came in as a world class young talent from a club with a higher revenue as Everton and just like Stones had a contract until 2019. Just because Schalke doesnt play in the same league as Everton should not make Stones as a defender worth more then winger like Sané, that makes no sense.

Not a chance City would have paid 50m for Stones if he wasnt English and a homegrown player cause why would they? There's no reason to do so, so its a factor and it makes sense that it is a factor.

Supply and demand, a 29 year old David Luiz cost 30m, Bailly cost about the same from Villarreal whose revenue is lower than any premier league club. Prices for centre backs are hugely inflated now because there so few good ones available.

City have plenty of homegrown players now, they didn't need another, the homegrown rule isn't as restrictive as it's made out to be and certainly not to the extent that it would massively inflate the prices of homegrown players.

They did need a CB though and paid what it took to get him, the reason he cost 50m is because it's what Everton demanded and City's choices in the market were very limited, as they were for everyone who wanted a CB.

Look at Wijnaldum, Sissoko or Fellaini, england based foreigners are every bit as overvalued as their english counterparts.

And even if homegrown status inflation was real, we have a lot of homegrown players, so that status is worth very little to us. There is no incentive whatsoever for us to give other clubs a non homegrown player discount.

Van Dijk will be valued as a key 25 year old player for a club with an annual revenue of around 150m on a contract until 2022 who plays in a position where there is a worldwide shortage of high quality players available for transfer.

In other words, a mind blowing fortune that no club in their right mind will likely pay.

Whilst your point may be valid you'd do well to remember for every Suarez, van Nistelrooy and van Hooijdonk (questionable), there is a Mateja Kezman, Afonso Alves or Memphis Depay.

I can't believe you made that comparison without the utterly hilarious Jozy Altidore.

This basically, the fact that Bailly and Mustafi, players not as good as Van Dijk, from a not very rich clubs, that didn't have premier league experience and are thus more of a gamble cost that much shows how much Van Dijk would cost.

Premier league player instantly adds like £15 - 20 million I'd reckon. Sissoko from a relegated spanish club would have been like £15 million.

But that just emphasises the point - you cant judge a player by what league he is playing in, especially young players who are also high scoring at international level.
