Message From Big Ron

Our ex-superstar centre forward is thrilled to bits that we've been put back into operation. He shared a few (horror) stories of old school football finance matters and said things ain't always what they seem.

The main thing is that wanted to express that he too shares our joy, it makes him very happy to think of his 'Southampton Family' in a much better place.

On the health front he is breathing better (he needs to quit the cigars FFS) and therefore able to do more excersise for his repaired hips. Chris, his wife is a little improved also after her illness set-back.

Benjii, good call mate. The problem is the travel. From his home in New Mexico he has to get at least one connection to London, it's a long haul. With his big, long legs and hip disposition it is uncomfortable to say the least.

He was wanted big time for the Terry Paine book signing, however, due to the timing of his second hip op - rehab etc it was regrettably not possible.

However...I will work on it. Just image the fan impact on Big Ron appearing before a critical game and throwing up some of his magnificent goals on the 'big-screen'.

Bloody hell, Sydenham was useful too!

Sydy was a fantastic player...thrilling, a real crowd please. Exhilerating and an even nicer person.

Met my young American girlfriend at Heathrow in '06 after she flew in from New York. She had no clue who he was, but commented on his red 'Saints' jacket. He kept her company and was totally charming for over an hour 'til my flight arrived from LA.

I saw her running up to me with (you guessed it) a red 'Saints' jacket on. I know you'll think he was probably hitting on her...not the case, just a total gentleman. Of course he let her keep the jacket. She treasures it and enjoys watching the crossing more than the scoring in that clip...even tho' she was instigative in Ron's ops and adores him too.

Darn right he was ! Won't take anything away from Terry Paine, but TP often was given the medialimelight and Sydenham was much underrated..even with almost 400 games. He was one time So'ton Schools sprint champion and it showed.

I recall his greyhound-like speed bursts, when he teasingly showed the full- back the ball, pushed it five yards ahead..and he was gone ! Sometimes he even had the time to get to the bye-line, stop and kill the ball, and centre

with ease. Not a great goal scorer himself but he made hundreds for others.

Great game John.

My Dad used to say that if it wasn't for the Milton Road wall he would have ended up in the docks.

Thanks to TT for posting the vid. It shows that even the top sides had no idea how to stop Big Ron. It also shows what the game looked like when teams actually used the fifteen yards just inside both touchlines.

Message from Big Ron...................don't make me laugh!

When he gave the initial interview (just before we forked out for his hip operation), he clearly knew very little about modern day Saints

He hardly painted a picture of a guy who is still an avid Saints fan

If I remember correctly, he said George Best told him the result of the 76 cup final

Good to see those goalden oldies again but frankly you could probably see better football on the Common nowadays.Nomarking, fouls that would be straight reds just ignored, pedestrian pace of the game, backpassing to the keeper, acres of spaces, first touches where the ball runs a good 10 yards before the second touch, it just wouldn't cut the mustard nowadays.

Football has changed and the players would act differently today but as they were? Blue Square south at best.

Best, Law, Charlton and Kidd were all class in that era. Mind you we were not a bad side either.

Nice to see the highlightes again. We used to call Sydenham the "road runner" for those who remember the cartoon of that era.

You are right though WC different game now but that can be said about most sports.

I'd happily donate towards a more comfortable flight if it meant he could get over here. You're the only one who seems to have contact with him Tim, put the idea forward!

What you say is so true...however, they were the best of their era. Undoubtedly with today's training, nutrition and preparation players like Ron Davies would have been every bit as effective and incredible. With Big Ron and modern methodology we would not have been relegated in '05 and no way in the mess we recently found ourselves.....just the same as MLT would have saved us with youth and and the latest technical training.

Yet, we have to leave them in their time and place - they are both Saints Gods.

This is a man of incredibly few resources by today's standards. I speak to him frequently and sorry to disappoint, but he truly cares about Saints in a form that mostly manifests in his concern about us Southampton fans. Please understand he has never used a pc like us. He has no cable tv and his only updates are when we tell him.

Thank you for your contribution to an ex-Saint who was living crippled with daily pain in the most humble of surrounds. He really appreciates not waking each day in his previous abject agony.

In my opinion great sportsmen of past eras would have been great sportsmen today too. The natural talent was clearly there and they would have benefited from the modern approach to training, diet and tactics. Best and Pele would have been footballing geniuses of any era.

I have just watched the clip and all I can say is that you must watch some f*****g good games on the common. Let us know the next time those teams are playing and we can all watch.

PS on the back pass - the only reason that it was outlawed was because it was used as a deliberate time wasting tactic. No evidence of that in this clip. And nowadays Theo uses the push the ball 10 yards and then use your speed - its not so different really

Tim, if he had 2 tickets in business class would Ron be fit enough to travel to the UK?

Dunc and TwentyTwenty, fantastic offers. I'll talk to Ron and Chris tomorrow (today for you) and see how they feel.

I know f'sure that it is actually Chris, Ron's wife that is actually the worse off of the two at the moment. She has had a fairly long term, nagging ailment that has seen her lose a considerable amount of weight.

I think Ron maybe up for it. Then there would be accomodation and transport stuff to work out as well???

I'll keep you posted.

Old Bill wasn't wrong, But what the hell do you know about width, most of the games you were dozing, leaning on the upright or winding up the opposition:cool:;).

From what I am hearing they are not into "charity" right now with all people who used to get comps etc being asked to buy their own STs - this includes the President!

Screw um then, we only need to let them know when he's coming over (if it happens) so they can get it sorted on the matchday and get him on the pitch.

But considering that our owner is meant to be interested in our history, if we could explain the situation to him maybe he would be accommodating? What President are you talking about btw?

John Mortimore I suspect.

Nice guy BTW and I suspect he would be well OK with buying his own season ticket.

No wonder season tickets in the Itchen Centre are going so well.

Any chance of finding out what that is for me? ??

But sheeriushly, put me down for £100 too if you need some cash for the tickets, Duncan.

We are not sure what is up with Chris, however, My girlfriend who was instigative in getting Ron his two ops with one of the West's finest surgeons, is looking into getting her some help also.

Chris can't keep her food down, she eats a little and then frequently throws it up. It leaves her weak :-(
