Overall good performance, but the weaknesses are there to be seen. The depth in the squad is short and there are limited options with what we have available. Our striking options are obvious but I think Patterson picked up a knock and that just makes the striking situation even more desperate to get someone of quality in quickly. If we address these issues this week then the season looks VERY promising.

We need better strength in depth to make an impact on this league. Conceeded from a set piece, very dissapointing and gave away a needless penalty.

Excellent debut from Murty, Harding doesn't look the most mobile (comment from guy in pub, he has 'the turning circle of a tanker.') but we looked fairly cohesive.

A few more signings and we will be right up there.

Seems to me we're still weak in midfield: in the second half we couldn't keep the ball and couldn't pressure Millwall on the ball, which enabled them at times to put our defence under a lot of pressure. The penalty award was bullsh*t in my view: when two players fall down with the ball between them, how can you give handball if the ball hits the arm of one of them? But it came about because of the pressuire they were putting on us. And then the goal: a midfielder not properly covering his man. Maybe as the season goes on Morgan will get a bit fitter, and players will learn their roles; but for me, midfield reinforcements are needed as well as a tall strong CB.

Was surprised how well Saints played, esp. in the first half. Not only did we play the better football, but we matched Milwall in the "physical" stakes. Sadly, and typically Saints, we didn`t do the good things that we did in the first half, during the second half and I had the feeling that Milwall would score again every time that they attacked towards the end.

Overall though not too disappointed and certainly confident that we have a good platform to build on. Good performances all round (Saga excepted!) but MoM for me definately Dan Harding. Terrier-like performance. Didn`t lay off opposition players with the ball but attacked them.

Whilst I agree with pretty well everything you say here, for me it was the attack that was really the problem. Saga was uninterested and Matt Paterson, although he played well today (and scored) he is a bit lightweight physically. We need someone who can get stuck in and cause havoc and panic in the opposition box. Sadly at the moment we don`t have that.

I hope they are one of the better sides because we were fairly comfortable for much of the game, and played far better than I feared.

Great to see Matt, and amazing double save by Kelvin.

Happy! - And how often can you say that when home from a game in recent years?

Blimey Norwich 0-2 colchester,already.

Pretty pleased with the result overall,we looked quite impressive in patches but our frailtys are there for all too see.

0-4 down now

...we played ok though, very impressed with Harding and Patterson. Pato was really busy all game and we really lost our threat as soon as he went off (hope it's not a bad knock)

Interesting to leave Gillet out....still don't rate Wotton there tbh, but you can understand us not wanting to play too youngens together i guess.

Someone like Matt Holland would have been excellent out there today IMO.

Still work to be done - but it's a decent start. (Woo -9 now)

i thought we did look more solid then last year. harding was superb very good defensively

thought patterson also was superb up front we really need a targetman in this league saga on his own up front looked lost and thats when things started going downhill. nice couple of flashes of brilliance from shcneiderlin too

one thing i will say tho is i wish kelvin davies would roll the ball out and keep it on the floor

knocking long balls just gives the ball back to the other team

Thought Schneiderlin played really well until he screwed up the pass which led to the pen. He has a lot of ability so hopefully Pardew can get more out of him. Paterson getting injured messed us up as we had no forward onthe bench to bring on. Not bad - would have taken a draw before the game.

He was playing superbly...then you're right, that bloody pass. He did that last season too, seems to lose that bit of concentration and lacks awareness at key times.

If you can coach that into him, then he's a player - ooses class on the ball.

Very impressed with: Davis, Thomas, Musty, Harding, Morgan, Patterson.

Played well: Perry, Wotton, Saga.

Must do better: Lallana, James.

Thought Thomson looked ok when he came on, Gillett and Gobern not so much.

Overall i think it was a fair result, though the ref wasn't brilliant. It's clearly obvious to everyone we need strengthening, but i believe we can put out a starting eleven to beat anyone in this league currently, on our day.

If we keep hold of Morgan we could have the player of League One this season. A class above in my opinion and my man of the match for Saints, although i thought Thomas was brilliant. A key player for us if he stays fit. Lallana is lost on the left, and then the right. When Patterson came off he should have pushed up to support Saga. Musty's experience showed, he knew exactly what he was doing, and a good long throw to boot.

A good first game, fitness will come. Bring on the transfers!

If only one of those lob's had gone in ...would of been b.e.a. utiful ... I agree we need to sign two or three players, would love a chirssy marsden style midfield general, and getting a big black 6'4 centre back would be helpful as well as someone whos a proven scorer in league football, other than that not a bad start, result as i predicted in the match score thread, looking forward to Swindon away, losing 5-0 to the newly promoted gillingham, think we might get our first away win there! Are defense was under pressure most of the game and looked good patterson looks like he found his level.

James was never in the game at RM should of taken him off earlyer then we did.

Harding looked good MOM.

Wayne Thomas was good untill he decied to pull down the striker for the pen which then resulted in a save from davis 2 courners and there goal.

Saga did ok his goal or would of been goal should of counted and he worked hard.

Overall ok result get in a decent striker and 2 or 3 roation players and were be sorted i think.

I thought James had a good game today, him and Lallana were having their shirts tugged at and being held the whole time they were on the pitch.

Also thought Gobern looked decent when he came on - Won every header.

Anyway - I thought we did enough to get 3 points today.

Disappointed that Saganowski's goal was seen as a foul on the goalkeeper - No way was it a foul.

We dominated the first hour imo, then after a very odd penalty decision it changed the game. Never a penalty.

Atmosphere seemed great today, after we scored it felt like the ground was rocking.

Good point imo, but yet the referee spoiled it a bit for me.

For however is interested:

Norwich 0-5 Colchester

WHAT!?

Back on topic though. Saga dissapointed me, I would rather have a less skillful player who wants to get stuck in out there then a luxury man who doesn't want to be there.

I agree re: Saga, he was really frustrating. His touch was off today as well and it kind of looked like he was running in treacle at times.

We need a giant focal point up top, with someone with pace to run off him. (we were sadly lacking pace today, when we had chances on the break)

Sorry to sound a bore, but our lack of physical strength to bully a game or bully our way back into a game is there for all to see.

And the signings we have so far made obviously are trying to address that.

We will get a few more in and finally have a bit of muscle to compliment the skill.

Completely agree.

Severely lacked any strength up front (although Pato tried his hardest) also midfield was good on the ball...but when the going got tough, it kind of evaporated.

I'm sure pard's is aware, he's constantly said we need stronger/experienced heads out there - i'm sure we'll get them!

Biggest problem today was out wide in midfield, neither James nor Lallanaare natural wide midfielders, we lacked an outball and they exploited it. There number 26 was very good, and just as well that 22 didn't come on earlier he ran the show when he came on. AP can we have them please in addition to a couple of wide players.

Harding showed good pace, Murty adds some footballing brain, and looks a bit of a character, hope we can get to to add a column to our site!

agree mate..we lacked some pace and power for sure..deffo up front and in the middle

We battled well but the lack of real pace up front and out wide means are build ups are slow and delibrate.

Whilst the defence played well in open play are in ability to defend set pieces is still a big worry for me.

Their goal came as a result of their non-penalty, which was a blatant dive. We could of been 2 even 3 up at that point, so all in all, satisfied. The Ref was not our best friend today, thought Patterson showed great promise, and young Morgan, showed the potential, missing last season, we will do well to hold onto him IMHO............. The full backs were solid, which was missing last year, played with confidence, the AP effect!!!

Murty, Davis, Harding and Paterson were all excellent today.

Schneiderlin was playing well until that dodgy pass, after which his confidence went.

Unfortunately, after we scored Millwall bullied us in the midfield and pulled the goal back.

IMO we're 4 or 5 players away from having a squad capable of climbing into the play offs. A CB, a CM and 2 or 3 strikers depending on what Saga decides to do.

Good analysis. We had no outlet on the flanks today and not enough balls crossed into the box hence a lack of clear-cut chances.

Still, a very solid back line and good foundations to build on for the season. Considering Millwall are supposedly one of the top teams in the league we should do alright this season.
