Snippet in today's Guardian

bridge too far

Recommended Posts

"Southampton's owner, Markus Liebherr, has a background in hockey – a revelation that will send a shudder down the spines of Saints fans who recall Rupert Lowe's spells as chairman with anything but tenderness. But before St Mary's agitators use that fact as a jolly hockey stick with which to beat the owner of League One's only winless team, it must be pointed out that Liebherr only played the game at university. And as a scion of Europe's 42nd-richest family, the Swiss-based billionaire does not look like someone Southampton fans should be driving out of their club."

Would appear that the Leibherr name is associated with other sports as well. I am currently in Germany and was watching German Eurosport last night, looks like they are the main sponsor for the world championships as well:

Hopfully when Saints are competing for the world team championships as well, the Liebherr name will adorn many an advertising hoarding..!

It is this sort of sloppy, lazy journalism that has made us a laughing stock. The man played hockey a few times and this "journalist" is trying to say we will force him out because of it. Well, I for one won't be campaignng for his resignation and I plead with all of you to follow suit. We should not be held to randsom by the media. Markus may well have played hockey, but he is our saviour and we should respect his past and freedom to play whatever sports he wants.

I just hope to God that Markus didn't read the "article" as he may get the wrong impression about us and clear off on his own accord.

I don't think it's that at all. The Guardian has always given us a good press - I just think it was a bit tongue in cheek. If anything, it has a pop at he who shall not be named.

If u ain't tried it, don't knock it!

I'm 47 and I've played hockey, football, rugby and cricket (and golf and skiing and sailing and cycling) and if I could have my time over again it's not even close .... I would be re-incarnated as a hockey player!

Grant it's not a great game to watch, but it's second to none to play (and the social side ****es over any of those others too).

Take my word for it: Rupes and ML were onto something there.

I'm playing 5 a-side football tomorrow after work, and recuperating for the rest of the weekend, damn knees!

COYR's!

You may well be right actually. Whatever, perhaps I was just feeling a little homesick whilst in my Germany hotel room, and it was nice to see a friendly German name plastered all over the TV...!

Swaythling was my kicking ground in my formative years back in the day, but I was never aware of salmon - where was that then, Woodmill?

Salmon Pool behind Woodmill. Hours of almost harmless fun 40 years ago! Often caught by Cyril, the gamekeeper who had a white Alsation called Prince. Used to scare the **** out of me. Used to march me home to my mum and confiscate my fishing gear.

We were back there the next night!
