The football league show

Her whole presence is deeply patronising. I don't blame her so much - more the format.

Claridge and the anchorman are pretty good - but the editorial stance of trying to show (mainly via Lizzie whatshername) "They're mental football fans...really mental...wow...look how mental they are..." is just lamentable.

It's almost as if it's a football show aimed at people who aren't really interested in football.

I agree that her contribution is little more than a distraction, but actually I think she's by far the most professional presenter on the show. The main man (don't even know his name), makes Lineker look like Jonathan Ross. He simply reads his links and sets up Claridge with tap ins, without actually contributing anything of value. Claridge would be alright ("22 years a professional") as an occasional pundit, but has a complete lack of charisma for what is effectively a co-presenter and his stuttering nonsense when effectively asked to condemn racism - something like "we just need to move on" was bordering on the offensive.

Oh well, at least theres a reason to watch theses days, even if it is with the FF button pressed until 47 mins.

In this day and age it should be possible for fans of all football league teams to receive a better service than this . Is it impossible for the BBC to provide a local version of this programme over the iPlayer ? The rights have been paid for and the cameras are there anyway so why not use that footage , split the programme so that each BBC TV region presents a version that concentrates on the teams in their area .

I find wading through a hour of TV just to find 1 minute of your teams game to be a singularly unsatisfactory experience .

Trouble is, we all want to see our own team and the BBC are responding to a very wide audience but have to lose the depth, due to the time available. Not ideal, but surely better than the prevailing idea that you concentrate on a few teams in the Prem as if all football fans were interested in them, which they are not. As for Lizzie's role, it does create a link to the fans, and she could be a role model for the girls to show that football is not just for men to follow.

The highlights that will appear in the Southampton section of the BBC web-site are always more extensive, so it's likely (I would think) that Lambert's shot will be shown then.

Sky also do a similar match highlights clip for each FL game from midnight tonight...

As per a previous posting the whole format is 'hog-wash'

The anchor-man should be fitted with one, and the 'Skate' summariser is merely reading from the 'Dictionary of Commentators Quotes', Loopy Liz should have been dumped after the first programme.

The programme is on too late for the non-technically equiped, i.e. IT, tape, and/or DVD, and like every other programme on the 'Beeb', it never starts on time and is preceded by the inevitable 'non-advertisements'.

Apart from that, I suppose it's adequate. !

Amen.

Just watched it via the red button and the whole show needs a rethink.

The BBC seem to have given up on employing people who can present.

Des Lynham and Steve Ryder are the last two presenters with any genuine skill and charisma to speak of.

They're now employing lightweight muppets to fund Jonathan Ross and his 18m...

Even Lineker is actually not very good as a presenter - he is stilted and doesn't have enough inflection in his voice.

Why not interview and recruit for genuinely good presenters? It's not like there aren't 3million unemployed.

And stop promoting people from Blue fecking Peter and Jackanory!!!

I couldnt give a monkeys if shes a Saints fan, its still bloody annoying, there's some knobs on this forum but I dont think "oh it's ok,he's a saints fan".

The format is ****.

And despite that it still makes ITV's efforts over the last few years look even worse!

The format is fine, but her bit just doesn't work. The anchor and Claridge play it pretty serious, but going to her for a 'mad' aside ruins the flow. She just needs to keep it a bit more serious.

To the chap who complained about the 'shallowness' of the highlights, you have to remember that it goes on pretty late as it is. If they showed much more of each game, those of us who are liable to nod off on the sofa wouldn't be able to cope.

Less annoying, patronising "fans opinion" and more highlights! We hit the bar two or three times yesterday didn't we? None of it was shown! I don't appreciate sitting up until 1 in the morning so that I can watch 15 seconds of Southampton highlights while you have three minutes of what Ipswich fans think of Keane.

Claridge is a kn*b. His monotone grates as does his 'stating the bl**ding obvious' comments - of course his heritage isn't going to endear him to many here!

The thing that irritates me more is that it is patently shown as a down market version of MOTD - cheaper set, lesser known presenters, poorer coverage. To be honest a Saints supporting blonde (if true) is an enhancement to the whole set up.

Yes....& where was RL's hafway line effort?!!

To be fair its alot better than itv's quite horrible efforts so I'll put up with her odd comments. At least they show (just about) more than the goals with some build up ply too, plus always from a normal camera angle, never itv's odd "drunk cam" from the touchline. It used to get me fuming when our highlights were shown like that, through bodies and legs at knee height with camera shakes for effect...

Question is, is it worth me trying to track the show down online?

Given the dire quality of live game commentary, decent quality game coverage although it is only available several days after the game when some of the excitement has worn off, what are the alternatives?

Hope a friend can put the phone near the radio so we can listen for free? Nope because the quality of commentary is still poor.

Move back to the UK? Because of the football show.

We need someone to create an alternative broadcaster to create some competition and increase the quality of the current drivel we receive. I would pay at least ten pounds more a year for better quality and one hundred or more for live games...

I don't actually mind the format, some of it is a bit cringe-worthy i must admit...but it's good having some live studio based content to cover the football league.

ITV were the best at creating excellent snazy glamor shots in games, whilst actually managing to miss the action.

I prefer the BBC's efforts so far.

I agree with SaintBobby above on 'Lizzie' - though it a MAHOOSIVE improvement on Jacqui Oatley, who was ****ing terrible.

But the show is general is very good - considering they have 72 clubs to wittle through where to Premier League only has 10-14 on average, they do it well. It's also worth taking into account just how bad ITV's coverage was... if you can't remember, I suggest you watch some of it back.... :o

I don't watch it very often but did last night and I quite liked the feature on the Swindon fan.

The guy got to meet Danny Wilson before the game and DW always comes over as a decent bloke whenever I've seen him ,a bit of joshing and banter before the game.

After the game (Swindon lost 0-2 at home) the guy gets to meet with DW pitchside and lays straight into the team including two f-words, Wilson keeps smiling, as the guy gives the team both barrels.

Who hasn't at sometime wanted to stand where that guy was stood, right after the game, and give it to one (or more!) of our managers?

Glad to see i'm not the only person that thinks TFLS is awful. When I get paid this month i'm definitely signing up to Saints Player, i'm fed up with 30 second highlights. It's worse than 'The Championship' imo!

The only upside is the slightly extended highlights on the BBC Sport page that appear the day after, it's quite good to be able to watch those back again.

I long for the day when there will be a decent Football League programme, that shows decent highlights for once. I like the regional idea that somebody posted up earlier, it could be done with South East, South West, London, Midlands and North East, North West shows. 6 shows lasting at about half an hour each, broadcast to the audiences in that area, in the way that regional news is. With added red button interactivity obviously, for fans that live outside of the region.

Pah, I could run this show easily! :D

Terestrial football coverage in general is pretty shocking IMO.

How often does a pundit / commentator / presenter tell you something you didn't already know?

When you watch other sports, those people actually add something. It's rare in football. I'm not sure if this is related to the intellect of people in the football industry or whether it's related to the broadcaster's perception of the intellect of those who watch.

What makes me laugh (not) is the way they tell you on MoTD, what games are 'still to come' -like they might be different to those played that day!!!??!!

I think it's all just a bit tired now.

I usually enjoy the Beeb's World Cup coverage though. Scenic studios.

I love the World Cup.

I love the world cup theme from Argentina 78. If anyone can tell me what it is, I will be very grateful. It was piano based and went kinda ding didy ding ding ding ding ding didy ding ding ding ding, ding diddy ding ding ding ding ding...

It was called Argentine Melody (Cancion De Argentina). Can be found on Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Premiere Collection Encore" album.

Considering we're in the third tier, I think it's pretty good that we get goal/match highlights on Sky Sports News (free on Freeview) by about 7pm, then the FL programme on BBC (along with 71 other teams) before bedtime - The FL programme is on red button until noon the following day - and then the Beeb uploads highlights on the web club by club at midnight Sunday/Monday.

If they got rid of the yakking altogether and showed more action then I'd have no complaints at all.
