In today's Times and can be found here

Quite lengthy and not sure who the author is, but a good read all the same.

Edit: it's actually dated yesterday so I'm surprised no one else picked this up!

Steve Keenan, one of the London Saints and works for the times. London Saints members voted throughout the summer and those with the most votes made it in.

I wont argue with the list because we would all have variations, but (given their eras) I would probably have included most of those 50 in my own list. Well done for publishing such a wonderful piece of journalism. Note to all... we all have our favourites. If we judge our players on the list based on... is ...xxxx playing ? and feeling very good about it... then Ruben Agboola would be there as well... but I was a teenager!!!

Great read. Don't necessarily agree with some of the rankings though I do with the top 4 - would be definitely be mine as well - Big Ron, Elvis Paine, Matt Le Tiss and Mick Channon - my all time hero. When is it going to Sir Mick? Long overdue.

Quote,

'It was always going to be between Le Tiss and Mick, but as much as Le Tiss was the epitome of Saints in the 1990s, so Channon was the backbone of the club in the 1970s. It's a generational thing. Those aged in their 30s would vote Le Tiss: those in their 50s for Channon'.

And I would write, those in their 60s might have said No 1 was Terry.

makes me upset to read all those names that have graced our club, and then to think about all the **** that have played for us over the last 4 or 5 years.

It would be interesting to see a graph of player 'ins' versus 'outs' over the last 50 seasons.

If someone would like to spend hours and hours researching and compiling the information, then I'm more than happy to spend 30 seconds reading it whilst stroking my beard and saying in a sagely way 'that's interesting', before moving on with my life and forgetting all about it.

That gave me my first genuine laugh of a rather **** day. Thank you.

Great article! Can't argue with a top 4 of Davies, Paine, Davies, Le Tissier and Channon, although personally I would still have put Le Tiss at number 1 (and I am in my 50s).

The McMenemy era rightly dominates the upper part of the list. Not sure that I would rate Steve Williams as high as 5th though - he had some great days but could also be a bit inconsistent. Armstrong at 9 is possibly a bit generous - higher than Case and Keegan at 13. I think Sydenham and Chivers deserve to be a bit higher than 22/23.

Thanks for the link.

Was Dodd really at the helm with Gorman for 5 months?

Was Niemi really substituted BY Paul Jones in the Cup Final?

"..n 1980 leading Keegan, Ball et all"

Yes. Niemi went off injured in the Cup Final and Jones came on, thereby claiming the distinction of keeping a clean sheet in a cup final and still finishing on the losing side.

First time ever a keeper had been substituted in an FA Cup Final.

Where the heck was Bobby Stokes?

Made 216 appearances, scoring 40 goals - including the most famous Saints goal ever!

There is 50 places to fill. If we all put in our favourites, we could probably come up with 250. There are some in the list I don't agree with but most I do. On the subject of Bobby Stokes, he obviously scored the cup final goal but he wasn't a great player (much the same as Ipswich coming up with a list without Roger Osbourne). He would be ahead of the likes of Hugh Fisher in my list but not necessarily in my top 50.

I believe you missed the pedantry, the word in question was BY, it should have been FOR. ;)

If we're proofing the article then I believe it was Souness who came out with the 'Struggling Southampton' line, not Strachan.

Tommy Jenkins FFS. He was another cameo player of little substance. Leaving out George O'Brien, unbelievable, he was in a different class to Derek Reeves. Reeves missed so many goals whilst George was a deadly finisher. Reeves scored freely in the third division but that his level.

Ted Drake? Eric Day?

Well done to the guy's who compiled that article, a great read, and those photo's brought back plenty of memories.

I too have been lucky enough to have watched most of the 50 in action for the Saints.

I was sat in the West Stand right behind Ivan Golac when he hit that rocket mentioned in the article.

The one touch "triangles" between Golac,Williams and Alan Ball really were a joy to watch.
