Ambitious Manager, ambitious club. Interesting that he's had no promises about funds to improve the team (but doesn't have to sell anyone). Canny or what?

Pardew interviews very intelligently - there is no doubt about that.

hmmm interesting read... we certainly need to hang on to a manager for a longer period than we have been able to for some time... a five year plan would do us nicely. But we must all be ready for those "lean periods" and not be so hasty as to call for the managers head.. it happens all to often in so many clubs!! We need stability at manager level like we had "in the old days" for a start. Just one negative for me... the call back for West Ham... the fact that he sees himself back there one day... thats a little niggling worry that he may up and leave for his very own "spiritual home" when WHU come knocking regardless of the 5 year plan (or am I being a bit too sensitive?)

Our job, the clubs job is to make a niche for him so that he finds that pull a weaker one and saints too good a job to walk away from.

I have been on record at being "underwhelmed" by AP's appointment and boy did I get some stick, but now, he gets my vote (for what it is worth) and he appears inextricably linked to the forward forces of the executive Markus/Nicola... so... we have turned the corner... and thanks to all concerned for that... we have our club back and some pride to boot.

Merry Christmas saints fans... for once!

The best quotes I have heard from a Saints manager for a long time...

I think it's very important not to lose the British mentality

We have a certain aggression that lifts us as a nation sometimes and we should never lose sight of that.

We are not here to breed mediocrity.

To finish middle of the table doesn't really interest me.

There is no doubt in my mind that Southampton have a very good chance of being in the Premier League in the next five years and I'm hoping I take them.

Merry Christmas!

I love the way he talks, he's a good guy.

I also love how keen he is to install a winning mentality here, that's all he wants to do. He's right as well, it's the key to everything.

Once you get a winning mentality at a big club it steam rolls, look at Leeds for e.g. - when they get promoted this year they will go on and push the top 6 in the championship next season, guaranteed.

I honestly cannot see us in another relegation battle until we're back in the premiership.

I actually love the fact that we are rarely in the news these days.... but when we are, it all appears positive stuff, buying good players, planning new training facilities, a manager with vision and plans for the future with the Owner backing him - life couldn't be better right now.

As far as West Ham goes, there is a good chance we'll be playing them next season! ;)

I actually have a bit of a soft spot for the 'ammers - so I will be rooting for them to stay up. Pompey on the other hand - hopefully the south coast derby returns next year...!

3rd richest owner now?

I guess that puts us just behind Chelsea and Man City then...

I wonder if we'll end up doing the same as them... would be a dream to see us win the Prem eventually...

What, you mean ludicrously sacking managers left, right and centre? Thankfully, we appear to have rich, but not megalomanianic owners...I doubt Man City have got a 5-minute plan, let alone a 5-year plan. Ourselves, on the other hand, have owners who are implementing a carefully devised business plan...let's face it, if they wanted to make money fast they wouldn't have touched a League One club with a bargepole.

Given the progress being made from top to bottom I guess AP will be returning to West Ham as victorious visiting manager...possibly as early as next season but that's still a long shot.

I do feel we would not have to do any reinventing if it should happen though - the majority of the current squad would fit seamlessly in to most Championship sides & would do so for us - without a doubt our owner will continue to back the progression - it was in his first vision/business plan.

Happy Xmas....isn't it?!

I'm having a soft spot for all the bottom eight or so teams (bar one) in the Prem this season. :D

Good interview. Couple of important points that clearly had been forgotten about

The mental side of football - motivation, mind sets etc now seem to have been realised and processes put in place. Probably a lot easier to do in an environment where professionals are allowed to do their job without "the boss" telling everyone what to do...

The "British" aspect, that extra little bit of "aggression" making the training ground "unpleasant" a really big dig at the Dutch experiment. We moaned the players weren't fit and boy has AP & his team shown us what should have been done, Staplewood now sounds like it is a football training ground not a holiday camp.

Everything is about giving us that extra edge, finding that "magical" 110% effort.

Am liking it, I worry he will be too successful for us to hold onto and I worry about the depth of the squad and the work rate on Lambert, but this interview just helps set up a feeling of....

Merry Christmas everyone

I thought this bit in the article was very well put:

The club have been involved in a slow-motion car crash over the past five years that has been every bit as gruesome as the fate that previously engulfed Leeds United, the League One leaders.

Then, reading on, it makes me realise how far we've come in such a short time - and also how far we still have to go. But at least now it's clear that we have people running the club - at all levels - who are properly equipped to get us there. And I'm sure they'll do just that.

Absolutely!

Contrast Pards to the dreary, mediocre bumbling mumblings of the likes of Georgie Boy!

There is nothing more uplifting than hearing a manager speak with such positivity and common sense, and engendering a positive winning mentality is absolutely essential for any team aspiring to climb the leagues.

For the first time in many, many years I am convinced we have the right men in charge of this club.

What a turnaround in only a matter of months.

"Come and get me" plea to West Ham at the end.........tut tut

Of everything that Pardew says in the article - all the wonderful, positive, "I want to be the one to take them back to the Premier League" things - I am really disappointed that you choose to infer something negative - something which I don't think one can infer to be honest.

I tend to ignore all the fluff 'have to say' bollix and look behind, in-between and inside the words.

Football managers are like politicians as far as they are programmed/robot like with interviews. Few speak the whole truth, saying more what the fans and chairman want to hear.

They will however occasionally slip up and when they do only a few will be able to spot it!

Its a gift. :)

when did a manager last change mentality and build at team as quickly, and, so far, as successfully?

Lambert @ Norwich

Simon Grayson @ Leeds

Lee Clark @ Huddersfield

Wilson @ Swindon

Phil Parkinson @ Charlton

Hughton @ Newcastle

Davies @ Forest

Pearson @ Leicester

Holloway @ Blackpool

Paul Lambert- Norwich

Really?

They had one crap result and fired their manager. And that result might have been a total fluke. Look at Wigan's 9-1 loss.

I don't remember them coming out of administration, with new owners and then having to buy eight new first team players...(Harding, Trottman, Jaidi, Lambert, Hammond, Waigo, Antonio, Connolly).

The whole point was that he was being judged way too early. A reasonable amount of time would have been to give him to Christmas and if that had happened rather than that silly its not if we sack him but when thread only a few weeks into his tenure I am sure the fanbase would have been more than happy with his management.

Fully agree. But it is one thing having a manager who is personally motivated by his own ambition and sheer bloody-minded will to succeed, quite another to inspire the players to have that never say die attitude on the pitch.

However, where Pardew has been extremely astute is in the choice of his signings. We are quite possibly the best example in this division of a team packed with captains from other teams. These are individuals whose leadership qualities have been recognised in the past, players who lead by example and command the respect of their colleagues. There is always the difficulty that having so many of them, that there might be jealousy or animosity between them, but these are professionals who recognise that through the success of the team as a unit, they will also enjoy individual success too.

This winning mentality is demonstrated clearly and epitomised by the two JPT matches where we went to a penalty shoot out and under previous teams would have capitulated. The winning of matches at the death, or the trials by penalty are invaluable experiences, so that a belief is instilled in the players minds that they are not beaten until the referee blows the final whistle. Pardew deserves great credit for choosing the right players and then getting that winning mentality into their minds.

But it must not be overlooked that at the beginning Cortese and Liebherr also had the ability to choose the right man and attract him against the odds to share the vision that they had for us.

All managers would love to be able to buy 8 new players - this is not a curse but a blessing.

Most of the managers ive listed above have needed to make do with the players they have and are succesful despite this.
