Colchester 2-1 Saints. Post match chat.

For me, if there is such a difference in performance between first half and second half, AP has got his starting selection and/or motivation/preparation desperately wrong.

Yes, we are winning more games than in recent years and we feel good, but something significant is missing from the team still.

Damn it....

Unfortunately looking more likely that our local derby nexyt year is Bournemouth and not Poopey!

We need to sort out our defence we cannot depend on getting 3 every match even though we make the chances!

We also need to find form against the top 8 sides so far our only win in the league against any of them is MK Dons!

Too little, too late.

bit ****ed off with the first half from us, sounded totally half hearted and you know that if you start games like that, you very rarely get anything out of them.

I still think we've got a long way to go in terms of quality in certain positions, we've got some good individuals...but the depth isn't there and i don't really think Jaidi has a solid partner...that should be priority for january IMO.

FFS we lost! From where we were in August we are miles better, but we still need more work.

We were not good on Boxing day, but this is not the end of the world. We still have a slim chance of the play offs, but I think this & the Leeds result gives Pardew more ammunition to get better players in.

Onwards & Upwards.

We're doing well, getting better, showing top 6 form, but we will lose games - that is the Saints of December 2009. We have come such a long way in 4 months and have the promise of signings next month, so we are well placed to make further progress. Not too gutted about today; second in 48 hours and away to a top of the table side. People need to be realistic in their expectations. We may still make the play offs, we may not, but all along people have been saying that next season is the season we take this league by storm so anything over and above that this season is a bonus. Bottom line - we aren't there yet, but we are heading in the right direction.

Happy New Year one and all.

Yes but we have defensive problems, plus APs insistence on finding Lloyd James a place somewhere or other for every game, plus his suicidal penchant for starting Antonio who can run around all day against old heads like U's and produce f*ck all.I don't know what he has against Papa starting but it's becoming a problem, especially when Connolly doesn't start either.

Yep, asolutely.

Surprise, surprise, we're not the finished article just yet. But of course, we probably should have been the finished article after what, 2 or 3 games in under AP?

We have some funny fans, we really do.

It's a shame we lost today, but the U's are a good team and we have an exciting January ahead. It's still a great time to be a Saints fan.

I'm annoyed with Pardew's team selection.

A 3 of Hammond, James and Schneiderlin is not going to work.

Schneiderlin and James are far too pedestrian to pose any threat to the other side.

If we're going to play that system then Wotton has to come in to allow the other two to push on more. I would also like to see us play that with Lallana as one of the three and some genuine width on the left.

------------------Wotton--------------

-----Hammond---------Lallana--------

Also, Antonio should not be starting.

But, although I am annoyed, I am not a plonker so will simply leave at it that without saying that we are pathetic.

What is it with Saints managers and their little b*m-ch*ms ???

Whilst disapointing, you have to respect where Colchester are in the league and their good home form. We are far from the finished article but this result is not a Swindon or Huddersfield.

My money is on us still making the playoffs and the next 4 league games are crucial!

Agreed. The 18 man squad needs strengthening. We've still got lots to work on - I don't think we've beaten any of the top six in the league this season have we?

Ok another loss against one of the top sides but I am less concerned.

We had 57% of possession.

We had 8 shots on target against their 5

We know we can score goals. Just did not happen for us today, particularly in the 2nd half.

We have dropped to 13th but we are on target.

This is correct + we still have scope for significant imporvement in January.

On target for what? Oh right being Champions in League next season.

Look, I am willing to wait 2 seasons to get into the CCC, really I am.

But AP is trying to build a team, and I fear he will be starting again in June if we dont do it this year, because Lallana, Lambert and a few others will be off.

This has all the feell about it for me of Burley having had all that money to spend in the play-off season but knowing the consequence if we didnt make it,

Until we sort the defence out once & for all we will continue to lose these sort of games. Now I thought the team was right at the start to try to compete against a physical side & protect our back 4. It proved wrong & throwing caution to the wind we were a real threat 2nd half, however it exposed our leaky defence & cost us in the end. I know its not all doom & gloom their Keeper made what sounded like at least 3 blinding saves & on another day we may have got back into it. Hopefully we can get the defence sorted in January.

Colchester was always going to be a tough place to go.

Moving on, a nice break now with the FA Cup, and the excitement of a transfer window for Pardew to strengthen - and not in a hurry like at the beginning of the season.

By the end of January, we'll be better placed to judge how the season will pan out, both in terms of squad strength and January results. I'm looking forward to it.

Who would have take this position at the start of the season. only losing 6 games so far, positive goal difference, scoring lots of goals! yes please. however frustrating it is it does show we lack depth in the squad. as others have said January should be quite interesting.

I know why you might be feeling like this Alps, but I don't fear what you fear, I really don't. The regime Burley was working under was one which needed results far more quickly and which consequently put more pressure on the team manager. They [Wilde et al] bet the house, garden and granny's jewellery on us going up and knew it was either win or bust. None of us can say that Liebherr and Cortese have shown any sign of behaving in the same way; quite the opposite in fact. We don't have to sell, we can probably match CCC wages and beyond, so AP doesn't have to worry in the way Burley must have [if he was capable of such anxiety :-) ]. If we don't go up at the end of next season, maybe certain players will move on, but I look at us now in a position of strength, built on foundations of stone, whereas Burley's Saints were running on quicksand.

Quite right.

We have to remember that the defence Pardew inherited looked like:

James----Perry/Lancashire---Thomas----Molyneux/Mills

When Colchester 2nd goal went in Sky Sports said `game over for the Saints`, interesting to see those who went why that could have been said...was it that bad.

How we got a win vs Exeter was probally due to them not taking chances but today its not the case. Quite often Saints get away with letting in more due to the opponents forwards not hitting the target.

I will settle for more the same in Jan...and a big 3-0 away win at MKD for the JTP. Saints in a better position than I expected at this point so who know maybe 1 forward and a defender in Jan window will help!
