Pilchards Posted 18 January, 2010 Share Posted 18 January, 2010 Who do you reckon was the highest paid manager for Saints? We always hear about players but never the managers On the subject I was asked yesterday by my lady 'Do managers get the same pay as players?' I have no idea but I reckon Rednapp was on a fair bit! John B Posted 18 January, 2010 Share Posted 18 January, 2010 (edited) I dont know the answer to your question but Probably Hoddle but I do know the lowest paid manager;) Edited 18 January, 2010 by John B
Rory Posted 18 January, 2010 Share Posted 18 January, 2010 I would have said Hoddle as well. First job after England and all that....
Pilchards Posted 18 January, 2010 Author Share Posted 18 January, 2010 I dont know the answer to your question but Probably Hoddle but I do know the lowest paid manager;) I knew how much Jason Dodd was on when he was our manager but I've forgotten now, I remember thinking at the time how could he survive on that. At a guess I would say Hoddle 25k a week?
stevegrant Posted 18 January, 2010 Share Posted 18 January, 2010 Redknapp, I'd have thought. Desperation appointment, and he'd have haggled his way to a fortune as a result.

forever a red and white Posted 18 January, 2010 Share Posted 18 January, 2010 i was told by a teacher who knew someone in the know at the club that when redknapp came in he was on huge wages. Difficult to imagine another manager earning as much, but its all time relative, wgaes can't compared now from ten years ago

westmidlandsaint Posted 18 January, 2010 Share Posted 18 January, 2010 i have nothing what so ever to back this up with but i was once told by somone quite high up (at the time) at saints (not going to divulge name either) that hoddle was on with bonuses (to qualify for european football) £4m a year. not sure i believe this as we were only at the dell at the time. Certainly not Alan Ball, I think he was on £60K a year. I could imagine McMenemy being on more than that in the 80's.

At last a figure, but at 4m a year with Wupert being the chairman I just can't see it. that's 80k a week, nah I can't see it somehow sorry! benjii Posted 18 January, 2010 Share Posted 18 January, 2010 Surely it's Nigel Pearson. That's why we had to sack him. We had no option. He must've been on a couple of billion at least.

I'd have to go for old saggy chops, Wupie must've offered him a small fortune to jump ship from the blue-few - oh hang on, he didn't know he would end up down here after walking out of the skates did he :^o
St Landrew Posted 18 January, 2010 Share Posted 18 January, 2010 Certainly not Alan Ball, I think he was on £60K a year. I could imagine McMenemy being on more than that in the 80's. That's true, it was £60K plus he got a bonus of £10K if he kept Saints in the Premier League. The average, at the time was £225K. After Bally kept us up, Askham offered him £72K, but Franny Lee came along from Man City and offered £288K plus bonuses. Not exactly the hardest decision you're ever going to make. He wrote in his biography that if he had felt wanted [Askham was very iffy with him], he'd have stayed even for £72K. As Lawrie was there too, Bally thought Askham was splitting Branfoot's wages between them.

INFLUENCED.COM Posted 18 January, 2010 Share Posted 18 January, 2010 Whatever we were paying Burley was too much. Shouldn't be that hard to arrive at the figure based on our 'compensation' of 300k
Saint 76er Posted 18 January, 2010 Share Posted 18 January, 2010 TBH it's not how much any individual manager was paid as such, it's more about the seemingly endless payouts to failed managers that we had to endure...
Foxstone Posted 18 January, 2010 Share Posted 18 January, 2010 Whatever we were paying Burley was too much. We are owed one hell of a rebate with that joker ! As for the highest paid, I reckon Souness must have been on a wedge!
Window Cleaner Posted 18 January, 2010 Share Posted 18 January, 2010 Wonder if Bagpuss had to take a pay cut when we were relegated... yes he did, he spoke of it at the time, "the players have had a trim, the Chairman has had a trim and I've had a short back and sides". The9 Posted 18 January, 2010 Share Posted 18 January, 2010 yes he did, he spoke of it at the time, "the players have had a trim, the Chairman has had a trim and I've had a short back and sides". Considering he got us relegated, spent most of the summer faffing over whether he'd carry on at the expense of strengthening the squad or clearing out the players who wanted to leave, and then bailed after 4 months of the new season, he was hardly in a position to complain. Junior Mullet Posted 18 January, 2010 Share Posted 18 January, 2010 Redknapp, I'd have thought. Desperation appointment, and he'd have haggled his way to a fortune as a result. Totally agree - bet it was him by a mile. It really was a desperate appointment - the last roll of the dice by a desperate Chairman who realised he had (A) appointed the wrong people previously and (B) neglected the first team in favour of the youth team farming enterprise

Saint Bones Posted 19 January, 2010 Share Posted 19 January, 2010 Ok it was a while ago - and maybe not in the big money era - But I reckon mr G Souness would have been on a great wicket. - Thankfully he sure as hell never got any "performance" bonuses
