Supersubpuckett Posted 6 April, 2010 Share Posted 6 April, 2010 Since when have we been known as the Reds? This chant was doing the rounds quite a lot yesterday, have I missed something as I thought we were the Saints? Are Newcastle known as the blacks? Apologies if this post has been dealt with before (so feel free to abuse me in the way only this forum knows) but I can't see why we're calling ourselves this when we've got a well established and distinctive nickname that goes right back to our heritage. Guest Dark Sotonic Mills Posted 6 April, 2010 Share Posted 6 April, 2010 So when we shout 'come on you yellows' at away matches, surely, by your logic, we should shout 'Come on you yellow and blues with a little bit of black for the manufacturer's logo, oh and don't forget the club crest which of course is red, white, green, blue and black...' Weston Saint Posted 6 April, 2010 Share Posted 6 April, 2010 It was always "Come on you Saints" in the 60's Why it changed to Reds when we are red & white is anyones guess. Lets get back to Saints please.

JonnyLove Posted 6 April, 2010 Share Posted 6 April, 2010 So next year if we do go back to our white shirt with a single red stripe will it be come on you whites, Reds or Saints. Personally I feel we should ditch Reds in favour of Saints. Oh and at Away matches with We always just used to chant Yellow, not come on you yellows. I suppose if we use Come on you Saints we can use this home and away

100%Red&White Posted 6 April, 2010 Share Posted 6 April, 2010 I do remember "Yellows, yellows, yellows... (etc)" and Come on you yellows" at Wembley in 1976. Throughout the 70s and 80s if we were playing in Yellow it was always "C'mon You Yeeelloooooows", it only changed after Swindon visited the Dell some time in the 90s and made quite a racket with "Yellows, Yellows, Yellows, etc." and, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, we just copied it. And it's always been "C'mon You Reds" since I started going early 70s - and it used to be belted out with a bit of feeling rather then the limp-wristed effort we get these dayszzzzzzzzzzz! The9 Posted 6 April, 2010 Share Posted 6 April, 2010 So next year if we do go back to our white shirt with a single red stripe... I have been wondering this for about 2 months but couldn't be arsed to post it on here because I know how little people care about our kits (except when they're "wrong", i.e. exist). COYR will have been remarkably short-sighted as a marketing campaign if next season will be white with red sash/white/black like the original. Am getting flashbacks now of midweek cup replays under the dell floodlights and the spine tingling moment when the chant would go up as we prepared to take a corner....... come on you reeeedddddddddsssssssssssssssssss!!! She went to her first saints game at the end of last season, as I didn't know if there would even be a club this season, (Markus be praised), but at the MK dons Semi at the SMS she did make me and my bestest friend laugh when we were 3 up and she shouted out 'GREEN army' by accident. docker-p Posted 6 April, 2010 Share Posted 6 April, 2010 It's always been "Come on you Reds" since I've been going (1975) although if we could change it to "Come on you Saints" it would be better. One thing at a time though. I still would like us to sing "Oh when the Saints" just steadily over and over, not starting too slow and getting faster, just one slowish pace throughout and then again without the repeated bit.
