Giordano Posted 19 April, 2010 Share Posted 19 April, 2010 The best goal we ever scored was Mick Channon versus Liverpool. 24th April 1982, almost exactly 28 years ago. I was there. It was a thing of beauty. Something you have to watch decades of average football just see once or twice live in front of your eyes. Younger Saints fans......look at the players, see the team sheet, watch the goal. THAT is our club. THAT is our football. THAT is part of our history. Its on Youtube...c/o Archersroad channel. Agghhhhhhhhhh.......lovely lovely....

Giordano Posted 19 April, 2010 Author Share Posted 19 April, 2010 (edited) " you won't see a better goal than that this season"....lol Thank you Saint clark for my oversight! I love it when commentator (maddeningly cant get his name - is it Motson? ) goes "Holmes, Armstrong, Keegan, Ball, Keegan, Armstrong, Baker, Keegan, Channon......"...all the time liverpool are chasing shadows....theres a bit of short passing, there's a long ball, there's a dribble, there's some one twos, there's a header, there's a wide ball, there's a cut inside, there's a half volley finish....there's a spin off blind pass, there's a lobbed header passs...jeez there's everything in the goal except may be a back heel! And in the background you can hear MC going something along the lines of " its quite a nice goal that was " or similar....lovely. Turkish Posted 19 April, 2010 Share Posted 19 April, 2010 two things that stand out about that goal are firstly the speed off passing and movement, the Liverpool players are putting the saints players under loads of pressure but every pass is spot on, quick, and movement first class again what was the best team in Europe, if not the world at that time. Also look at David Armstrongs contribution, he starts the move off on the edge of his own penalty area and then turns up on the edge of the Liverpool area to overhead kick to Keegan, a great great goal. Giordano Posted 19 April, 2010 Author Share Posted 19 April, 2010 Turkish- quite right. That Liverpool team were reigning Division One champions, won the League Cup and charity shield that year and were reigning European Cup (now Champions League) holders. That probably made them the best team on the planet in 1982. And that goal destroyed them with total football. Its the equivalent of us doing that to Barcelona today - not Man utd as i think Liverpool were more dominant at that time than man utd are today. mightysaints Posted 19 April, 2010 Share Posted 19 April, 2010 The game was on ITV at the time. It came second in the goal of the season. Suprise suprise Liverpool got goal of the season but it was so biased as Ian St John was the judge.

Badger Posted 19 April, 2010 Share Posted 19 April, 2010 MLT's first v Newcastle 1993(or 4?) is my favourite individual goal, but the Channon v Liverpool is easily the best team goal. If I have to come off the fence, perhaps Channon's goal shades it for several bits of individual brilliance..the overhead kick by Armstrong who incredibly is also involved in the start of the build up...how much ground did Armstrong,Channon and Keegan make up for that move?...and the wheeling arm celebration to end it.. There was a game a month or so ago (can't remember which) in which Papa got criticised on here for sticking a good chance over the bar. However the move was started by Papa himself on the edge of our box by nicking the ball from an opposition attacker and quickly switching the play to Harding. If if if if if, I know, but it would have been sweet if he'd managed to put it away properly.

Giordano Posted 19 April, 2010 Author Share Posted 19 April, 2010 poetic football.....total football.......guys that never got the chance to watch those early to mid eighties saints teams im sorry for you but at least we have the vids........i dont think we will see those kind of players at Saints for a long time.....plus, again for those that cant remember the Dell ( and especially Archers road) can you see how Channon smashed the ball so hard it looks like it can virtually hit the supporters the other side of the nets? Yes, we were that close to the pitch them days.....i think what really tops it off though is Channons windmill and smiling run direct into camera, great telly, copied, incidentally, by Marco Tardelli when he scored THAT goal against Germany in the 1982 World Cup Final only a few months later - direct rip off i reckons...Tardelli must have been watching Channon and thought- ooh that looks a good un if i scores... I was told by a Man City fan at the time, and have since read that Lawrie and John Bond came to an agreement after Lawrie agreed to let Steve Williams go to City(plus cash adjustment). The then City chairman Peter Swales vetoed it in fear of a backlash from their fans. Agghhhhhhhhhh....lovely lovely.... On the original video I saw it was a 14 ..or was it 17 pass move. From the team effort / skill point of view it is clearly a worthy winner. .....but many others are worth a look, too. Some great long-distance shot are memorable. The infamous 40 yard left foot effort from Brian O'Neil is still a favourite amongst older fans, as is that Ivan Golac screamer into the Archers Road goal. A deceiving 35 yarder from Nick Holmes that sailed inside the post at The Milton End looked like slow-motion at the time.(forgot the opposition.) However, it would be difficult to say which of a dozen efforts from Matt Le Tissier was the best...I could watch them forever.

I've just watched a fair few old games I hadn't seen for ages. The one I enjoyed most was this one - I won't give the score away in case someone doesn't know it. It obviously does have a happy ending but man, did we make it hard for ourselves... Man Utd v Saints. FA Cup 1992: Was this Branfoot's finest hour? Stuart Gray scoring as well. (shame about the Pompey goal at the end of this but ho-hum - they lost in the end). Thanks to the people who are putting these up on YouTube. Great stuff. As for best ever Saints goal? Pilchards Posted 19 April, 2010 Share Posted 19 April, 2010 Yes that Channon goal was special. He even scored it with his very weak left peg! I remember about 10 years after that happened it came on a sports channel, they showed the goal and I bursted out 'You won't see a better goal.......' About 5 seconds before the commentator said it and the 10 guys in the room looked at me as they was impressed with my knowledge.

MbaleSaint Posted 20 April, 2010 Share Posted 20 April, 2010 The Channon goal is definitely the best team goal I've seen Saints score (shame we lost the match 3-2) but for individual goals MLT must have the top five, with a special mention for Nick Holmes lang-range effort against Liverpool (in a 3-2 win) and, of course, Barry Horne. Oh, and Steve Moran against Leeds when he beat 4 or 5 defenders and then the keeper.
