Where are all these signings then ?

Its July 1st, and supposedly every contract in english football has ended or been dissolved. The World Cup, that other great block to trasnfer activity in the third Division of the English Football League, is almost over. The domestic game has been ended long enough for players and managers alike to buy and bring home their straw donkeys, kiss-me-quick hats and crap paintings of flamenco dancers.

So all of those huge inconveniences to NC and AP bringing new players in, according to many of you, are gone.

Whats your new excuses ????????

Do you simply love being agressively contentious, Alpine, and practice in front of the mirror, or do you manage it without any effort at all?

Why not go searching for an Edelweiss or something and just let whatever happens happens without the "I told you so" attitude?

Does anyone have to live with you or are you a high altitude hermit?

These questions do not require an answer........

I don't normally agree with many things Alpine posts but on this i think he raises a good point.

Last season we used the excuse that we didn't have time to bed the team together in the pre-season for our poor start.

Well our first pre-season friendly is on July 27th at Barnet. It would be reassuring to see some signings, let the team train together for a week before the first pre-season friendly. So not a lot of time left to get this sorted!

Just looking through some of your posts recently Alpine and you have a pretty impressive record at making yourself look like a right tit. You also had the nerve to tell someone in the Germany v England thread to "get a life" despite the fact you have been waiting however long for this very date so you can post this new thread.

Well done.

All these signings? What are you expecting? We already have the strongest squad in the league. Our squad was far too bloated last season which is why we have let a lot of players who didn't play go.

We will probably add one or two more players but no more than that. Certainly not enough for your to trot out your yearly depressive thread about not having time to 'gel'.

I think you worry about things too much.

I think 3 to 4 weeks is plenty of time to sort out the 4 or 5 transfers we probably need, actually.

Alpine in 'negative post with leading question as the title' shocker.

He's only giving his opinion. I don't agree with it, but it's hardly a big deal. I don't get why so many people flap so much on here.

It's still too early to question transfer activity (or lack of it) and in any case we've got a good team anyway so it's not as if there's any real urgency.

disagree with both points.

1. We have no recognised RB, we need another playmaker in CM, and we have limited options up front since Papa and Antonio are gone

2. The season is only about 5 weeks away, and we need to get through the proverbial "gelling" b*ll*cks. And all the excuses for no activity in June appear to have ellapsed, to me..

hardly been a flurry of activity elsewhere either......

Both Huddersfield and Peterboro have been active recruiting.

Having said that we have a strong nucleus of a squad so are perhaps looking at specific positions and am hopeful that the quality of player we are seeking might make it a more complex deal to complete. The players Huddersfield etc are signing might only be on the fringe of our squad wheras we need a couple to go into the first team to make a difference.

Mind you, we could also loose a couple of good players as well. I should imagine some of the better players in our squad may be targets for other teams in ccc. Who knows!

Exactly. We get to the beginning of August, Lallana and Schniederlin f**k off, and we are left scrabbling around for second-rate replacements.

Sorry, my bad. We signed a 4th LB.

Incorrect; by all acounts we signed a first-choice left back.

Anyway, I know you love a good tantrum, but your "gelling" argument from last year has to be taken in context with when the players were actually signed. From Soccerbase.com....

Dan Harding, 21 July 2009

Rickie Lambert, 11 August 2009

Dean Hammond, 20 August 2009

Radhi Jaidi, 3 September 2009

Add in the loanees...

Jacob Melliss, 14 August 2009

Neal trotman, 19 August 2009

Pap Waigo, 1 September 2009

Michail Antonio, 5 October 2009

So last season we signed just 1 player before the start of the season. We had already matched that by the start of July. I'll start to get worried if by the start of August we haven't signed at least 3 more players; making a fuss of it before then is just foot-stamping nonsense.

So what are you suggesting

1 We sell them now

or

2 Get in two players in case they leave

Sorry guys, but there is some valid points in the thread. Cortese and Liebherr have not bought the club to be an also ran, i think the years of mediocrity has filtered into the fans thinking and a lot of you are just happy with what we have got.

To those who say we don't need signings are crazy. Firstly we are weaker than last season, no right back at the club, therefore at least 2 needed or one and another covering right back.

We have lsot Papa and Antonio, so both need to be covered and we are weak in the middle of the park.

The current team would not run away with the league and needs at least 6 new players, so hence the urgency from the fans.

Top clubs always refresh their squads with better players each year, its called progression! we are in a unique postion where there are a lot of teams in financial trouble and we are financially strong, even stronger than teams in the championship. This is a buyers market and we would be foolish not to cherry pick the best players.

I trust Pards and i am sure the work is being done, however i also hope we get our work done early so we can have a pre-season for once.

There are a lot of holes to fill so lets not kid ourselves, we are still lacking in the middle of the park and are crying out for an enfrocer.

Lots of work to be done, lets hope it starts soon....

we don't need too many new players, we will have RB a striker and probably a CM in before the start of the season.

Transfer activity usually starts to get going mid-july time, the fact that the window is ''now'' open means sod all really.

wait till the world cup has been over for a week or so, we'll then start seeing movement...panic when we get to the 1st of august with no signings.

What he is saying and I agree with him is that Pardew was saying because he was late in coming he missed lots of Bosman gems well he has not got any so far this season as Dixon will cost money

We have lost Semi Waigio Antonio Thomas James plus others who played from time to time

We have the same central midfielders who played for us last season, minus the mighty James and Gillett. We have three strikers, four if you include Lallana. We just need one player, a right back, to start the season. We will need more cover in some areas, but if we sign a RB we can put out easily the strongest XI in League 1.

Keep taking the pills.

If I were to predict the first person to panic I would have picked you.

We're presumably biding our time to ensure we sign players of the highest achievable quality. So I see it as a good thing that we aren't rushing. We could have gone and signed any old toss just to keep you happy but then you'd moan during the season that the team was cack.

Southampton doesn't exist to meet your need for instant gratification and luckily most fans seem to have more patience than the average 5 year old.

Certainly if Dickson is a sign of the kind of quality we're looking to bring in then I am more than happy to leave it in the capable hands of Pardew and Cortese.

Basically Alpine...we've got a list of targets and most of those targets will be players that are slightly too good for us. We'll be punching above our weight in most cases. This is because we need championship players in a league one squad. Eg Fonte. Do you think there's been more than one offer for these players and quite possibly due to the amount of time left in the transfer window, they might be holding out to see if another club comes in so they can negotiate a better deal? I expect they are hard at work negotiating as we waste our time on here.

The concern is that by trying to get nPC level players & still being in L1, we'll completely miss out & the best L1 players will have gone. It is a dangerous strategy being played out by the club here & one that may backfire. Yes the existing first 11 is strong, but there is little depth at the moment considering we've released a number of fringe players.

That said, there is still plenty of time so no-one (except Alpine) should be panicking just yet.

Is this crass comment really necessary ?

No because we need another half a dozen players to make up the squad it is OK having 11 good players but if the replacements for injury or suspension are crap then problems arise.

Look at England when Ferdinand was injured we got Upson playing we need four five new players

But I do expect some signings this week

Again, you're taking the gelling argument out of context. We had a wholesale change of team last year, look at the team we kicked off with a compare it to the team we scored our first win with.

This year we already have a gelled nucleus of a very good side. We obviously need a new right back to plug that hole, but other signings will be made to strengthen and reinforce other positions on the pitch where we are already strong.

We only need a couple of CCC clubs or PL clubs to come in for our couple of our currrent players for the situation to become "wholesale" again, imo. And by then, the available options will have become limited.

We all agree about hitting the ground running in August. I find it shocking that a contingent of our fans think leaving team strengthening until the end of July / early August is a sensible idea.

I just want to ask a genuine question to Alpine here.

What do you actually think we are doing regarding these signings? Do you think that absolutely nothing is going on behind the scenes at all?

You complain about how nothing has been announced etc but its worded in such a way that you genuinely believe that you are the only person to realise that nothing has been announced so far and that you genuinely believe you are the only person to realise that we need to streghten in certain areas. It's almost as if you think its Football Manager and you are able to get things sorted pretty quickly but you believe Cortese/Pardew/Whoever is genuinely not doing anything at all...?

Agree, hope you are right about the signings.

Here's a genuine answer. I am not sure that something is going on about transfers, tbh. There are signs that the club is somehow consolidating revenue streams, it could be we are not going to make signings. Maybe ML was so p*ssed off at least seasons result, he has told the club to stand on its own two feet now. In which case, maybe Cortese now has to work under the same constraints as Lowe did, but without the smug supercillious attitude.
