As well as being amused that Pulis got bumped practically off the radar, the most interesting quirk I've noted is Oxlade-Chamberlain being given 26. I was "reliably informed" a few weeks ago that unless he had a "1" in his number, his name doesn't fit on the shirt. His old number was 41, so dunno how that's going to work. Rumour also has it that Cortese's been asking for him to drop a surname for convenience !

Well why move Harding from 2 to 3 and Puncheon from 4 to 10? Why not just put Richardson as 3 and move Morgan from 19 to 10?

Because Harding is a left back and Richardson a right back, so that's logical to give them 2 and 3 which are the traditional numbers for those positions.

Puncheon is a more attacking midfielder than Schneiderlin, which is reflected by their 10 and 4 numbers.

Falling out of the top XI are :

6 to 15 Jaidi

10 to 16 Wotton and

11 to 21 Holmes.

Pulis dropping from 21 to 36 makes me smile, except for the Ormerod-battering connotations.

Other "promotions" up the list :

Schneiderlin 19 to 4

Fonte 12 to 6

Barnard 17 to 9

Martin 39 to 17

Seaborne 35 to 19

McNish 34 to 28.

The interesting thing is that the numbers submitted to the FL (at least up til last season) had to be consecutive, so we've got a wodge of number-holes to fill !

...seriously where's connolly?

Maybe one of the "marquee" signings we've spoken to has said...."I'll sign for you at a reduced wage cost but I want the number 8 shirt as a token gesture in return from SFC"....and they're just waiting for the transfer to be confirmed (or dropped) before giving Connolly the number 8 if it falls through?

Perhaps.

Almost certainly the case that we'd at least want to leave some "decent" numbers free for new signings. I'm having squad number based fun with my Sunday side at the moment, never commit all the first XI, there's always someone who'll want to "negotiate". :)

Unlikely - Think of how many letters you'd have to pay for in the club shop if you wanted his name on your back! Ker-ching!:)

22, perhaps he was missed initially but he's there now

Good to see the swaps so that our RB is 2 and our LB is 3 at least some people understand proper numbering in football. But surprised at Dickson being given 5 unless he fancies being a CB.

It wasn't an oversight type of omission because they put up a sentence at the end of the original article saying "David Connolly is yet to be allocated a squad number" (or words to that effect).

So this must now mean that we've got a new high profile No.8 coming in very soon then.....

What I want to know is, who decides which player gets which number? Definitive answer please, not opnions.

Cortese gives out the squad numbers. In fact, he always refers to the players by their number because he doesn't like the familiarity of names. All of the staff at SMS all have numbers too, and he uses these to refer to them. The players that were released at the end of last season were ones that refused to accept the number that Cortese gave them, so they were dispensed with.

Probably more to do with Jaidi wanting to be 15 because that was his number for Tunisia. Then Fonte probably had the choice of 5 or 6, and it made sense to fill the other one with someone who will play regularly for the first team.

In the 11 minutes since I've posted this, my season ticket money has been refunded to me. I've called the ticket office over 30 times in the past two minutes and still haven't got an answer as to why this has happened.

Worry not all ye, Connolly has got 22 according to OS . AOC has indeed been short changed down to Alex Chamberlain in the list, so the girl who puts names on shirts has come off strike, and the rarely seen lesser spotted Gobern has indeed got a number, so is still with us then.

I reckon the number 8 will be given to our new "Rickie Lambert double" striker (probably Nathan Tyson!) and the number 11 will be for our new pacy attacking winger (not sure on who this will be though!)! Darren Carter to take number 24.

A great loan signing would be Jonjo Shelvey from Liverpool. He is less likely to get a game now at Liverpool after the arrival of Joe Cole (even though they have sold Yossi Benayoun) and I reckon he would be up for the challenge of getting us promoted this year! He also plays as in CM and can score and create goals too which is exactly what we need!

8 will be left for the midfielder that we need to sign. 11 will be left for the pacey winger we're going to sign. 13 for Bialkowski.

Makes sense, but that means Connolly will be no higher than 22. Surprising..

Ah, forget it. Behind the times
