MarkSFC Posted 9 September, 2010 Share Posted 9 September, 2010 Completely underwhelmed if this finally dies happen. Really hoped for a more high profile man, someone who will instantly lift the club (fans and players) and give everyone a boost, especially after the last tough few weeks. Nevertheless on paper I think Adkins has alot going for him and does appear to prefer a passing flowing style of football. He has also dealt with a few reasonably good strikers so hopefully will get our lot (plus one more!) scoring for fun! It's easy for us to be critical without talking to individuals and although this could be regarded as a cheaper option he may well "really be the best fit" for Corteses vision. In that we must trust. Adkins appears loyal and that aspect may well have played a bigger part than normal in the decision making process. All the "other potential candidates" I could see moving on in 2-3 years. Adkins I think could be of similar character to Moyes (only perception!) and bebhere for ages assuming success. Regardless of our personal feelings we should get behind him and get promotion!!! Dr Who? Posted 9 September, 2010 Share Posted 9 September, 2010 Where did this wow factor thing come from??? Saturday from the club via either radio solent or 5 live. 'An appoint will be made by the middle of the week and it will show the fans that he (NC) is serious and knows what he is doing'. I took this rightly or wrongly to be that a big name was coming in, but maybe he does know what he is doing... only time will tell.

Weston Saint Posted 9 September, 2010 Author Share Posted 9 September, 2010 (edited) I am very happy with the appointment. Adkins ticks all the boxes for me. I know he is not the "wow" factor that many wanted but this is all about a Manager who has a proven record at this level, will grow in the job as we move up the leagues and shows the signs of having the ability to Manage at the highest level. His previous team plays flowing football, using the whole pitch and I fully expect to see the "Southampton" style we all crave for. Well done to Cortese. del boy Posted 9 September, 2010 Share Posted 9 September, 2010 Mrs A breathes huge sigh of relief. On a more serious note, I't looks a good appointment but God help NA if he doesn't start with 10 straight wins. Here's a crazy idea - why don't we all get behind him and give our full support? Sorry...... what was I thinking.. NA out

Would'nt surprise me if we are back on the managerial merry go round in 9 months time however.Hope i'm wrong..... 9months???...9 games IMO. I do hope NC has weighed up the fan pressure, a big name would have got a longer honeymoon period. I suggest the majority of fans are underwhelmed and sceptical. Therefore the patience will be in short supply. I doubt there are many who would have swapped AP for NA. I thought there was a media report saying that the appointment will win the fans over and prove NC correct. Where i sit that is not the case. Good luck Nigel but ....... Dr Who? Posted 9 September, 2010 Share Posted 9 September, 2010 It was made up on here and now people are gutted it wasn't true. Crazy isn't it. We've made a good appointment. As good as MON, no, but was he a viable option? Most likely not a chance in hell. Was not made up, was listen the the radio on the way down to Southampton on Saturday and the impression that was given was that it would be a coup! We have what we have, so onwards and upwards. Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 9 September, 2010 Share Posted 9 September, 2010 Think this could turn out to be an inspired appointment. An ambitious manager who is supposedly an excellent man manager whose teams play entertaining, flowing football. Best of luck NA! Also, as a trained physio, he might also spot that Lambert is obviously carrying an injury and will hopefully bring in someone on loan to allow him to recover...! forever a red and white Posted 9 September, 2010 Share Posted 9 September, 2010 Good appointment. The man deserves respect as a manager and we could have done a lot worse than him. He's ocming down a league forget, and altghough we have the resources of a Premier League club, we are a League 1 Club which some people would do good to remember. Just becasue he has done well at S****horpe on a shoe string budget, fans automatically asume he can't handle money and big-name players... based on what? I say quit the whinging, put up with it and lets get behind him ffs. Not in the same bracket of course, but lets not forget Bob Paisley started as a physio and look how he turned it out. Lets give the bloke time and hopefully he can turn this early mess into promotion. COYR/WIFM ect etc etc etc
saint lard Posted 9 September, 2010 Share Posted 9 September, 2010 (edited) Good chance of of getting out of this league as anybody probably, from there...i'm not convinced, that is my only criticism of the appointment. The9 Posted 9 September, 2010 Share Posted 9 September, 2010 Well, I'm not sure it's the right choice, and I don't think it's an improvement on Pardew, but he's the boss now so he'll have my support until we have reason not to. keithd Posted 9 September, 2010 Share Posted 9 September, 2010 Im not dazzled by the appointment, but then again i was disappointed when strachan took over. Didnt rate him, but he did a damned good job for us. hopefully he is a strong leader as he'll need to be with some "big" names (for league 1) at our club and a chairman who isnt afraid to make ballsy decisions when things dont go well. good luck Adders red and white army
raucebysaint Posted 9 September, 2010 Share Posted 9 September, 2010 Give Nigel Adkins a chance, he has done a fantastic job at Scunny.. This could be the start of "The Saints Marching In" again ! There'll be those who can't see that, but hopefully they'll give him time to prove them wrong anyway. Pleaaaaaase no pining for Pardew every time we go 1-0 down. Complete support for Adkins will give him the best possible chance of getting us promoted. I agree with this he has got promotion twice from this division and that is our immediate goal lets get behind him and the team and start to move forward. The Godfather Posted 9 September, 2010 Share Posted 9 September, 2010 Good realistic appointment for our club, plays good football. The problem with a so-called 'big' name is as soon as the next big job came along they would of been gone.
Dr Who? Posted 9 September, 2010 Share Posted 9 September, 2010 That's the spirit.... Christ, imagine if it had been Keegan...9 months would be long term. Adkins is a loyal guy, it's taken him a long time to leave and he doesn't seem the sort to move around regularly. If he does a good job he could be here a long time IMO. You think MON would have been long term, really? Or the self publicising Brown? Off the second they got a better job offer. Or it could have been the high profile Sven! Take some big money for a few months then **** off. Brilliant. Where the hell has high profile got us in recent years? Burley was relatively high profile for the CCC, but awful. Only Hoddle did alright, and what happened there...yes he quickly ****ed off. No Adkins I am worried about leaving.... it is NC and the not getting result. Red and White Army Posted 9 September, 2010 Share Posted 9 September, 2010 I am uninspired. If he does poorly, he will be fired. If he does well, he will be poached by a Premier League club when we're in the Championship. Why would he demonstrate any more loyalty to us than he has to the club that has made his career? Why did we get rid of Pardew? This is a cheap & highly risky appointment along the sides we have tried and failed at many times before. It might succeed - I hope it does! - but I can't in all honesty say I think firing Pardew and replacing with Adkins is a good move.
sambosa75 Posted 9 September, 2010 Share Posted 9 September, 2010 Best of luck. Of course we'd have all preferred O'Neill but realistically was it ever really going to happen? Adkins has a superb record and S****horpe have had nationwide plaudits for the football they play. If he can carry that on with us and keep encouraging our passing, attacking-style football but installing a bit more consistency in us this will be a fantastic appointment. Welcome to the club Nigel and best of luck.
