Saints should go for Gosney

As someone who watches AFC Totton regularly i am not surprised in the slightest to see League clubs ( Millwall, Brighton, Wycombe & Bournemouth ) starting to queue up for wing wizard Mike Gosney. Mike is a supremely gifted player, he has great pace skill and trickery and he can cross pin point whilst moving at speed. He scores lots of goals for a left winger too! He must score 50% of all free kicks that he gets in or around the box and he takes wicked corners. I am AMAZED that Saints haven't taken a look at him. He is from Hedge End and i think he is a Saints supporter. Forget the fact Millwall are a championship side, i reckon if Saints made a move for him he'd bite their hand off. Why let him go to Millwall or Brighton.....get your finger out Saints.....he is quality!!

He is 22 mate. Totton manager Stu Ritchie signed him as a kid from Winchester City. He has always had bags of ability but he gets better and better every season.

So the same age as Lallana and plays in the same position. He would have to be absolutely exceptional to make it worthwhile adding to the squad and blocking the path of academy wingers.

Stranger things have happened, take Man U centre back Smalling, 3 years ago he was playing at a very similar standard to Gosney.

Gosney is a neighbour of mine and has had a few clubs interested for a while.

The trouble is being interested and making a firm offer is two different matters.

He trained with bompey last year but never heard anything more.

He's a lovely lad and totally dedicated if anyone deserves a bit of luck its him.

Mike had awkward employers at the time i think who wouldn't give him time off at the times Eastliegh wanted to look at him. Being a regular at Totton i speak to Mike quite alot, he is a really great lad, who plays down his own ability, he is modest in the extreme. But trust me when i say he is quality. I thought about posting about him on here a couple of years ago and many times since but i didn't want Totton to lose him. This time it looks like some league clubs are ready to take him so i am resigned to him going, but if he is going to go then i'd rather he went to Saints than anyone else. I just want whoever buys him to let Totton keep him untill the end of the season to allow us to get promotion.

BTW I was a Saints ST holder up untill 2007 but in recent years i have been watching Totton more and saints less. I Love both clubs.

He just hasn't got the quality that Lallana, Chamberlain, Dickson, Forte and even young Mills have. If any clubs take a punt it won't be us.

He may be a decent player, but don't confuse a couple of decent performances for Totton to having the quality to perform in the Championship. That said, I do sometimes wonder just how far apart the technical side of the game is between some very very good lower league players to league 1/championship. Unfortunately if you have not been picked by 22 and after a few scouts have looked at you AND had a trial at Bompey i would not hold out much hope really.

Shame, i hope he does well as i hope any decent young player does well.

Lallana is Premier League quality without doubt. I reckon Gosney could play as high as championship level. That is also the opinion of our assistant manager, who i spoke to about Mike recently.Time will tell. Totton are at home to Cinderford Town on the 26th when Saints are at Plymouth so come along and see him for yourselves and you will see how good he is.

Mike gosney lives down my road, very good player on his day.

Had a bit of a hit and miss career, trials with bournemouth twice, and rejected twice, had the chance with aldershot last summer, but as they contacted him on the saturday and wanted him down on the sunday, he declinded because of work? bit of a silly oppertunity to turn down

also, when on loan at eastleigh last season, he didnt turn up for training or matches a few times due to work also.....

any if you care, he works at t.g.i fridays

Unfortunately for bigger clubs that shows a lack of commitment.

If i was offered a chance at clubs like that i am afriad work would come second and i would hope they can understand. Would probably be a bit more difficult in my line of work now but i am sure i could get people to cover my work for a few days if i had any planned outages etc.

The fact that he just works at T.G.I Fridays however i can't really explain, and probably nor could the clubs.

He may make it somewhere like Exeter, Wycombe and perhaps Millwall but i can't see clubs with better squads and money to spend going for him really, no offence meant may i add.

Certainly worth considering.

No doubt many would have dismissed Steve Guppy's chances after he failed the first time at Saints.

Imagine if you will, five years down the road, we're in the Prem and it's Cup Final day, held 40 years to the day after our last triumph in the FA Cup and there leading us out was Mike Gosney. The lad who came late to the professional game, was taken a punt on by the club he supported as a boy and has helped them rise through the divisions to a respectable 9th that season. It'll only take a bit of that Gosney magic to see the Saints back in Europe next season.

It'll be a cracker and worth a punt by some young documentary maker to get in touch with Mike along with their camera at the ready to follow upcoming developments, if Mike's as good as people suggest and commits himself, it'll be bigger than Escape to Victory. That was a doc wasn't it?

Gosney is a decent player and if the rumours were true, was about to sign for Bournemouth around the time when Totton went to Wembley.

Unfortunately in the FA Vase (And I have no idea if this had an impact) Gosney had a bit of a shocker and the occassion seemed to get to him. Everything semed to go quiet from there and he stayed with Totton.

Interesting people are writing him off on the premise that "if he hasn't made it by now"... though is it really true about him turning down trials, missing training?????

Players do develop later, FWIW. They're also discovered later, too: DJ Campbell, Wade Elliott, Chris Smalling and the trio from Peterborough who made the step up in half a season etc..

Besides, it'll hardly cost much to take a punt on him....

Ian Wright, Vinny Jones etc etc. Your right lungs, but the longer it hasnt happned for, the harder it becomes.

The acid test is whether he is better than we already have in the reserves or has the potential to be better, By taking him on we would be walking away from years of training and nuture for one of the younger players. Of course that doesnt mean all the youngsters are going to make it, but there has to be a very tangible difference in ability, to bring someone in that won't walk straight into the team or even squad.

Ive seen him play a few times and don't think Ive ever walked away thinking he could make it pro, but then i know fook all, so that doesn't really count for much.

We missed out on Austin, it seems everybody knew about him except us. We missed out on Aaron Martin until Ian Baird put him forward. 29 goals this season we should at least trial him. We don't seem to be very good at scouting local players.

He's a good player at Tottons level but I don't think he'd make it any higher than Conference, he seems to go missing alot in Tottons games, and most of his goals this season have been penaltys

I've watched him 150 times at least and i would say out of those 150 games he has not had many quiet-ish games maybe 15 max.

I totally disagree mate, he has had the odd quietish game but they are becoming few and far between. He has scored 29 goals this season in all comps, 9 of which have been penalties. REMEMBER he is a wide player and not a striker, so 29 is a decnt tally. I am off to Hungerford this evening to watch Totton, hopefully he will add to his total.

But when you see the standard of most of the teams in that league bar the exception of Sholing then you can see why hes scored so many. He's a good player don't get me wrong just Zamaretto South and West and League 1 are worlds apart.

Believe it or not he had a quiet 1st half at Hungerford this evening and limped off injured at half time. Luckily for Totton they went on to win 3-0. I hope for Gossies sake that the injury doesn't wreck his chance of a move to a league club. I saw Gary Waddock the Wycombe manager at Hungerford this evening, he was obviously keeping tabs on Mike, he would have walked away a little disappointed.

A not-entirely-realistic angle on the realities of life there. Not everyone is in a position to drop whatever job it is they're doing and whatever income it is they're getting at a second's notice for the opportunity to POSSIBLY get a better opportunity. If he chucked it in or got sacked, where does that leave him if the big move doesn't come off ?

I speak as someone who once missed out on playing in a national league for a club who was in the UEFA Cup the same season due to having to work Saturdays in a sports shop.

Seriously, even my agent was taking the p11ss.*

Even at the time I was thinking "I have to at least TRY to do this or I'll always regret it", so I changed jobs within the same company to a 9-5er so I could get there for weekend matches, but that window of opportunity is not very big, and there are lots of other players out there.

*technically speaking I never signed anything, but he spotted me and got me there, and he was an agent.
