Just asking if anyone is at all anxious. After all, we have to go back to Burley before we find a manager who ended started a new season with us after finishing one. Personally, I put the probability at 0.000000000001%. But it will feel strange to have the same boss at the start of a season!

Gemmel Posted 5 May, 2011 Share Posted 5 May, 2011 Back off the OP, whilst I think it is highly highly unlikely and genuinely think he loves it here, football is football and many many other stranger things have happened. We even signed the european player of the year once. It won't happen and if it does, it will more likely be the other way around of us attracting a very big name and pushing Nigel out, but again, just can't see it. The reality is he starts from scratch next season and he will be judged on his results. He has passed every test so far with the exception of his signings, which havent had enough of a chance to prove themselves.
jjsaint Posted 5 May, 2011 Share Posted 5 May, 2011 The amount of times our best managers and players have been poached (we even lost Burley!), it is understandable to get a bit nervous whenever we do well. I just don't see NA going anywhere, at least not at this stage. He wouldn't be first choice for most Prem teams as he isn't a 'big name', and most Championship clubs around us would be a step down for him. I could envisage a situation in the not-too-distant future, around November or December at the earliest, where NA is drawn to a struggling Prem team (say Norwich) who have just sacked/lost their manager. Or our NPC season doesn't go exactly as planned, we're languishing in mid table, and he goes to a more successful NPC club (for example West Ham if they go down but do well next year). All hypothetical though and certainly not worth worrying about.
Smirking_Saint Posted 5 May, 2011 Share Posted 5 May, 2011 I heard a rumour the other day, all be it from a completely unrelated source that I neither trust nor distrust that he is having family problems down here. Crab Lungs Posted 5 May, 2011 Share Posted 5 May, 2011 If he continues his upward trajectory, there is no doubt he will eventually manager Liverpool, I'm sure. However, and make no mistake, I think he's a decent, honest, hardworking professional who is together as one with this football club, striving towards the same goal and will continue to do so for us for the considerable future

scotty Posted 5 May, 2011 Share Posted 5 May, 2011 IMO Adkins will either be our manager in the top flight or he'll struggle and be sacked in the championship. I don't see him leaving for another club. this.

Bloody hope not, but stranger things... Not the daftest thread at all, after all football is a tad mental at times and we've all got our own opinions. Likewise, I didn't find the thread about asking if there was a possibility that Adkins might get the sack if we went up to be daft either. You're just putting a premise out there and seeing what people feel about it. For the record I think we have enough about us to keep him (if we want to ). Not being grandoise about things, but even in the Championship we're still a big side and it would take a really top offer (money and club and pull) to persuade him to go. And I just don't see any "big" club in the top flight making such an offer. His track record from Div 3 to Div 2 is impressive, but I don't think that would be enough to win some of the big clubs over and as others have mentioned there does seem to be a form of snobbery in town (I reckon if Huddersfield make it, then Clarke and Poyet with their footballing records would probably be seen as a bigger bet for some). If he does even better than Paul Lambert next season & Dalglish gets the sack then it might get interesting!!!!!!!!!!

All hypothetical though and certainly not worth worrying about. Why on earth would this Norwich (or whoever) want to appoint a manager whose season "hasn't gone exactly as planned" and is "languishing in mid-table" in the second tier? Adkins will only be of interest to Prem clubs if Saints are solid top three and challenging to go up automatically. And if we are, then its unlikely Adkins would want to leave - he might as well finish the job and promote us, rather than take over a relegation bound Norwich/Blackburn/whoever. If it is in the city itself, it must be 'infill' with little or no garden or space round it, and that will not suit the footballer's stereotype. If he wants space he'll need an old house, or be well outside the city centre .. and if you can't walk to the centre you're missing half the advantge of Winchester as a place.
