Lawrie Mc Menemy

So often slander/libeled/slagged on here but I bumped into the big man yesterday outside the Chapel Arms. A car pulled up and was stopped by my mate Rich... It was Lawrie Mac. We were in dj's and bow ties and the Echo had run a small piece about how we were celebrating the last game in tribute of my mum who passed away in September. Lawire had obviously read the piece and said "Which one of you lads's mother passed away recently?" "Mine," I replied. "God bless her, son, God bless her." and he shook my hand...

People can say what they want about the man but that was a lovely thing to say....

Yet another example of " the media image" not really portraying the person's real personality.

Nice gesture, how many others responded in the same way, I wonder ?

That's brilliant Daren and I am sure you were touched when he did that.

It is such a shame there are a few bitter and twisted people on here who love to throw mud at a good mans name.

Dont think its so much 'bitter and twisted' - just perplexing at times. This gesture, shows exactly that he is obviously a warm, compassionate and kind man, going out of his way to do something, quietly and personal and that shows great character. The work he does locally for charities and local causes exemplifies that he is obviously a decent bloke. What he did for saints is already legendary, and nothing can take away from that.... which is why sometimes it just seems odd that hes seems to have taken the way the takeover panned out so personally and that he cant seem to be able to let it go. I think and hope all (and I suspect) 99.9 % of fans will look at Daren's post and recognise that its these sort of things should and do outweigh any of the other stuff.

Its nice to see and as Daren states, something that does LM great credit.

Firstly, condolences over the loss of your mother.

My son & I were sat high in the Kingsland/Northam corner and noticed a row of black & white ( assumed to be dinner suits).Thought that was a novel way of marking the promotion, obviously did not realise the personal angle to it. Well done.

As for Lawrie, I go along with the earlier comments that he will always be held in the highest esteem as a Saints legend in my eyes, and most who remember the 1975- 84 years.Sometimes it appears self promotion over all else but you can't deny his record, and feelings for the club. Its a great shame he and NC can't publicly heal the apparent rift, NC would certainly have no need for a publicity agent again.

This.

I read my first ever derogatory comment of Lawrie on this very forum a few years back and couldn't quite believe my eyes. I had simply never heard such a comment, not since he went to Sunderland and to be honest, most were over that not long after as he was forgiven for 'going back home'. As it turned out Lawrie really did believe his own hype about the area, the same hype he used to bring so many great players to the club. And he was soon heading south to Chandlers Ford, where he's been ever since. With his connections he should still have an ambassadorial role ala Bobby Charlton at the club, a job he'd do rather well I think.

He gave me the greatest years watching Southampton and for that he will forever be my number one Saints manager - and a top bloke too.

i was stood on the corner when he pulled over. just thought he was having a bit of banter with you guys because of your attire. what a lovely thing for him to do & i bet it made you feel great.

when the game finished, i ended up down the bottom of the Itchen stand & could see Lawrie stood outside one of the boxes (ex-saints, Ted Bates?) with a massive smile on his face, clearly loving the scene in front of him. his love for the club can never be doubted.

PS. was in the Northam & could see you guys down by Itchen/Chapel corner. bet your mum was looking down with a proud smile on her face.

Don't really like to drop names, however I have spent time with Lawrie and his Wife around a dinner table at SMS on more than one occasion and in my opinion they are both lovely people, they love the Saints and he has some great tales to tell. Regardless of his opinions regarding the people running the club now (I not sure I agree with everything he says, but why shouldn't he have an opinion?), he only wants the best for Saints.

Top bloke, always a legend in my eyes and a real privelage to shake his hand and spend time in his company. Even though he turfed me out of an end of aisle seat once - "this is where I usually sit, so I can stretch out my legs" he said...I didn't argue!

You guys looked the biz.

Got a good reaction from Chappers too when he was warming up...!

And got a good chorus out of the Chapel too

Enjoyed the banter especially as we (We're The Chapel) outsung them. Daren, I was at the front leading my posse, next to the bloke on the mobility scooter. Thanks for adding to the day for us, great banter mate.
