Looks like he's effectively no longer our player:

Bit of a shame, but I guess thats another one off the wage bill for good...

Southampton have told him they won't be offering him a new contract at the end of the campaign and we needed that experienced Championship goalscorer in our squad.

I particular like the highlighted bit that they need an experienced goalscorer! Why don't we need an experienced goalscorer then Mr lowe?

No surprise. But possibly also signals the end of any possible forthcoming takeover. Afterall, if Mr Fulthorpe had intended on bringing in Shearer in the New Year to rebuild and survive in this League, John would have been one of the 1st players to recall I would speculate.

Oh well.

Because any player over the age of 18 in our team appears to be frowned upon.....

I know, we have some fans who have no idea that scoring is what a striker is paid to do. Not work, not run around, not paint the stands, not sell tickets or hamburgers or wave at the fans, or take their shirts off. Just scoring goals.

Dull but essential.

Sounds exactly like my defence of Fuller a couple of years ago.

Spot on 3rd Coming.

Unfortunately, that is not their only job. Some just score goals, some just run around a lot with not a lot of end product. But a 'goal scoring' centre forward wouldn't have missed half the chances stern missed last year. Ok his goals did end up keeping us in the league, but i believe there were better options than him anyway.

There are strikers out there that score goals, and contribute to the team as well....kenwyne jones, james beattie just to name two...

The point is we had John who scored. Now we have strikers who don't. Listing all those wonderful players who score and contribute is magic - know any on less than £30k a week?

Only one thing decided it sadly - money. He was one of our highest earners and (unlike some) actually wanted by another club, so he had to go. All other opinion is irrelevant.

True enough. Though we await the nippa's wage bill in the Feb accounts to see whether this decision to lose such a vital goalscorer was worth it to finance 3-whatever League 2 standard players.

Stern will be missed. Took alot of stick from saints fans while here, then went on to finish as one of the league's top scorers (and he didnt start every game). Amongst his goals were some real crackers (Hull, Stoke etc). While he didnt run around, did contribute to the team- was the only player who could hold the ball up and bring others into play, something sorely missed this season.

Paterson?! people having a laugh - the guy is tall in that lightweight and lanky way - if you think he gives us presence or pace up front, think again. Hopefully he has other attributes (finishing etc) but too soon to tell. Stern was proven through and through.

Anyway thanks Stern. Whatever happens, hope he gets a decent reception (as Birmingham did earlier this season) when/if we come up against him.

What is with all this sudden Stern John worship? Potential legend?? You're havin' a larf surely.

He did a great job for us but was constantly abused by the fans and was probably glad to get away. That goal on the last day won a few over thankfully so he left with his head held high (rightly so) but he has done f*** all at Bristol really.

There's a lesson here for you guys. If you really want players to stay, get off their back and give them a bit of encouragement whilst they are wearing the red n white. Whatever you think of the current side, there are very few who do not genuinely love playing here. The alternative - particularly for youngsters - is to drive them out and moan about how they start to show true potential at the next club where they are more appreciated.

He saved us once. That is pretty good and deserves a house point. You're right on the rest though. There is a good warning here.

Yeah and Sperm John is banging them in at the mo isnt he.

Thats not really a relevant comment because it takes time to get to know your team to "gel" as burley would say! He hasn't been at city long. Playing here alongside players he already knows would provide us the goods I'm sure of that

More chance of Brapley Wright-Phillips staying onside, i disagree, he is past it now.

Actually for Bristol C he may have not been scoring loads but he has had an impact, it's no coincidence that suddenly Nicky Maynard has hit form. Take a look at some recent Bristol C highlights and you will find that John has been involved in most of their goals even if its not him who is scoring them.

Thanks for last years goals which kept us from relegation...

We desperately need someone to do the same but the powers that be, think we don`t......false economy!!

Have we anyone that can do the same this season?..............

Nope...

Unless Saga can and is allowed to try.....

Why not? His first season here proves he can, and if he is good enough for the Champions League, I think he may just be good enough for us

True but I agree with others when they said he was just playing for a contract! ten goals and looking really good, we sign him and he can't score for sheite.

However I have no doubt in his ability to be a goal scorer just well........... he isn't one yet! and we need somone who can get us goals fast if we are to keep the dream of survival alive

Stern John was one of the few little chinks of light in an othewise awful last season. Several times, while at work, I'd enquire of the score on the Beeb website, or here on the forum; to find out that Saints had surprisingly got one in the net. And yep, it was Stern John again. Later I'd watch the 30 second highlights, and his goal would always be a bit of quality. These days he's not the hardest runner, but he's always known where the goal is. And that kept the relegation wolf away last season. So fair play to the guy, and here's a little sign off from an appreciative supporter:
