CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 13 January, 2009 Share Posted 13 January, 2009 http://www.uefa.com/footballeurope/news/kind=2/newsid=792221.html A smashing little player and a Saints legend I'd say , if only we had strikers of this calibre now . SFC1906 Posted 13 January, 2009 Share Posted 13 January, 2009 Definately a legend! Anyone think we have a chance of tempting him into one last huraah with us? He says he'd stay with Skonto for a 'token amount' of money - sounds right up Rupert's street, Or is he still too injury prone? God we could do with some of his goals now

hughieslastminutegoal Posted 13 January, 2009 Share Posted 13 January, 2009 Still wouldn't mind him on a pay as you play basis. Well, that wouldn't cost us much then, though the physio might not have time for anyone else. Don't you think the word "legend" is a tad over used when it is applied to a guy who had a good season and a half but shirked the rest of his time here? fanimal Posted 13 January, 2009 Share Posted 13 January, 2009 What a performance.....should play the video of that to the team before every game! Marian was never the same after that thug at Swindon took him out with a two footed tackle in a pre season friendly, appalling challenge.

Nah, not when he scored twice against Everton to keep us up and that debut equalising goal against Blackburn as a sub And then there was that superb strike against the Skates

a1ex2001 Posted 13 January, 2009 Share Posted 13 January, 2009 I haven't had a players name on my shirt since he left I just can't bring myself to have anyone other than the little number 17 pure genius when he was fit. He loved the club and we loved him I was gutted that he didn't get to say a final goodbye to the fans from the playing field with his boots on. Whitey Grandad Posted 13 January, 2009 Share Posted 13 January, 2009 My memory is of him skinning Jap Staam at Old Trafford to score, and wining the ball back and crossing for MLT to get the equaliser at 3-3.

corsacar saint Posted 13 January, 2009 Share Posted 13 January, 2009 I spoke to one of the guys who works at the car wash next to Asda, He said he used to play football as a kid with Marian, and still knows him. He said he lives in Latvia, and also owns a restaurant somewhere in London.[ Which is run for him by a manager].

Chez Posted 13 January, 2009 Share Posted 13 January, 2009 (edited) more of a cult hero than a legend in my eyes, although the goal against the Skates alone means he will always be a fans favourite. Edited 13 January, 2009 by Chez

Andoverian Posted 13 January, 2009 Share Posted 13 January, 2009 Pahars was a star! Most true Saints fans can have nothing but great memories of the guy. I would welcome him back in any capacity at any time. At his best he was sensational.
offix Posted 13 January, 2009 Share Posted 13 January, 2009 Decent enough player in his day, definitely NOT in the "legend" class though. We need to keep that designation for the truly greats!

eelpie Posted 13 January, 2009 Share Posted 13 January, 2009 I'll never forget Pahars great games for us, and his last lap of honour when he had tears in his eyes. He never wanted to leave. A true Saint who was never appreciated enough imo, due to his many injuries. Remember the best, not the worst.

Window Cleaner Posted 13 January, 2009 Share Posted 13 January, 2009 Not surprised ; probably far far too many corticoids when he was a young player in Latvia/Russia. Gets players back on their feet in no time. The after affects probably shorten a good number of careers. Ask Jim Steele about cortisone injections. VectisSaint Posted 13 January, 2009 Share Posted 13 January, 2009 Tha Latvian Michael Owen. How prophetic was that, both sadly always injured. Never forgive Rory Fallon for that tackle at Swindon pre-season. Thug.

His left-foot, 35-yard screamer against Derby at the Dell is still by far and away the best Saints goal I have seen scored by someone not named Matt Le Tissier. Arizona Posted 14 January, 2009 Share Posted 14 January, 2009 Got to by my all time favourite Saints player. I liked him even more than MLT. So many fantastic moments. I have never seen anyone so happy to score for Saints as Marian against the Skates. Nutmegging the world´s best defender at Old Trafford. The goals against Blackburn and Everton when he had just joined. Scoring a brace against Liverpool at the Dell to come from 3-0 down and get a draw, then leaping into the crowd after netting the equalisers with 10s left of injury time. He scored Saints first ever goal at SMS in a defeat to Villa and scored the only goal in our first ever win at SMS against Charlton. His best goals aren´t even that well known as they weren´t as important. Who remembers him running through the entire Man Utd team to score a late consolation goal at the Dell or the strike against Derby that wouldn´t look out of place on a "MLT´s top 10 goals" compilation. I think he is also third in the Premiership´s all time headers by a short arse tally, behind the English Marian Pahars and SKP. If that doesn´t qualify for legend status I don´t know what does. St_Guido Posted 16 January, 2009 Share Posted 16 January, 2009 One of my all-time favourites for Saints. I too shed a tear during his farewell lap of honour. My sone has that lovely poster of Marian, Beatts & KD on his bedroom wall & it still raises goosebumps when I see it - what a great strikeforce we had then. I really don't think he offered to play for nothing as Rupert would have made him sign there and then and probably sued him if he got injured for not sticking to his end of the deal.
