Don't we need to separate 'loan + obligation to buy' scenarios and straight-forward loans without any committment? I can't think why we'd want / need to avoid the latter?

Because of (FFS, I will say it) PSR - we don't want to have to spend to stand still. It cuts our finances down too far for what we need if we get promoted. Having it on the previous years accounts means we have more wiggle room.

We didn't have to buy Downes did we? That was a choice we made based on his time with us on loan in the championship.

We didn't have any obligation with Downes. He was Martin's best mate is all. It's the model for 23 other clubs in this division, so to suggest it's not good enough for us smacks of an arrogance that we can't afford to have.

Yeah fair enough I guess. Nothing stopping us being less emotional this time and just taking a loan in a position we need to get the job done and then re asses when (if) we get back up.

 

Seems silly to completely rule out the loan market just incase we fall in love with another loanee.

I kind of get it. Generally speaking, if you're getting someone in on loan in the championship, its because they're not good enough for the leauge above. 

You run the risk, as we did Downes, of getting a player who is key to the system to the point where you can't not sign them, but not good enough to step up and/or outside of that system. 

Downes having such a good season for us meant we probably paid 5m over what we should have.

We don’t need to sell for less. Dibling in the end we had to compromise on more than we wanted to because he only had 2 years left on his contract and realistically, even if he had a good Championship season with us, we were never going to get £35/40m plus for him next summer with 12 months left on a contract (with him refusing to sign a new one). Fernandes has 4 years left and with the Dibling money, we’re under no pressure to lower our asking price of £50m up front.

Not true, they cost less this year and will allow flexibility to replace next year (1 year more amortised value off the books). Don't forget PSR is never an issue for the year in play, it's what that 3rd year constitutes looking back over the previous 2.

The long and short of it is, if you stay in the championship, you are fucked. We should be doing anything we can to make this side the best in the league this season, and that includes loaning PL players.

I'd be trying to bring in Lewis Cook or Lewis Miley on loan. Both long shots, but if Fernandes departs we need some quality in.

Pointless IMO. Aribo is a good player at this level, pretty versatile and capable of scoring.

The reason to let him go is because he has a year left so if we get £5m or so for him then fair enough but loaning him only to have to replace him would be stupid. We might as well keep him as he would be useful.

Ipswich already tried and failed in an attempt to get Miley, and with Tonali now injured he'll be a regular in their squad.
