Completely agree, we give the opposition so much time to set up their defence.

We almost never catch teams on the break or create great chances which the strikers have to score. Our best chance in the last few games was the Jander one which was a pot shot and he followed it in. Hardly a glorious chance created…

The system is flawed imo.

Watching back on old Saints games, it was incredible how quickly we used to get from goalkeeper to opposition penalty area. No stopping at the halfway line and playing a sideways pass as today’s players are minded to do.

I think that's the thing, Whitey. Watching Brentford against West Ham, Brentford had so many chances and they only put a couple away. Our forwards get one maybe two chances a match and we say "how on earth did he miss that?", "should have won that game but for xxxx's miss". Sod xG or whatever the stats are called. In reality, I'm going to the games and can see we're not creating enough chances.

Or Saints players stop on edge of box look left and right the pass sideways or back. If your a professional footballer in any position including goalkeeper you should be able to hit the goal from ede edge. We don't play real football its some middle of the pitch keep ball. Strikers should never pass they are there to hit the goal.

Probably five at the back again, don’t really want to see it but we are creating chances.

BUT, I can’t help but feel if we had an additional forward or skid fielder racing into the box we’d be tucking more goals away.

All I think about when there’s three at the back is “there’s on additional pass across the back line every time there is the start of an attack from the back”.

That will be us in a couple of years with SR at the reigns.

Looks like a formation tomorrow of 1 GK & 10 random outfield players. And a bench 'worth' more than the whole of the Champ. Knock it around our defensive third for a bit with the odd punt forward to mix it up, rinse and repeat. Our xG will be 27000, 26999 of which will be pass-backs/scuffs/rushed shots/toe punts due to slow build up/players literally shitting themselves. The excuses of 'illness' are being thrown out for why we are so shit. Good one.

Another bore draw or loss. Cool. 🙂

Still definitely contenders for promotion though.

Jack Walker, a football fan brought in football management and football players (didn't Shearer come from us?). When he passes away, a bunch of rich chancers take over to have a toy to play with....oh oh!

Did find it amusing that a couple said if we draw tomorrow it might not be enough to save Still's job.

Looks like we'll be going into this game level on points with Sheff Utd.

Yep, Sheff Utd who lost their first 6 games!

At least they had to bollocks to sack a manager who clearly wasn't working out. We'll still be hearing WS saying "we just need a bit more time" in March.

Wtf is expected post goal threat?  Fuck off Will, you nerdy prick 😂.

Expected Post Goal Threat (xT) is a soccer metric that measures the likelihood of a goal being scored from a player's actions, by considering the location and quality of passes and carries. Unlike Expected Goals (xG), which focuses on the quality of a shot, xT evaluates the threat a team or player creates over a series of actions. It is calculated by dividing the pitch into a grid and assigning a value to each zone based on how likely it is to lead to a goal, with areas closer to the opponent's goal having a higher value.

Taking my lad to his first game tomorrow so I'm hoping he brings us some luck!! Don't want to be seeing the usual sheriff badge footed sh!te we've had so far this season.

Happy memories of my first away game with my boys . They were 'lucky' enough to see us well beaten by a really strong Arsenal side, how would the current lot get on against that Arsenal team? TBF that Saints side isn't all that either.

What a complete load of shite. Football isn't half being over complicated these days, too many pointless stats and figures.

Only one that counts, the rest is utter hogwash.

Interesting there are no stats on Expected back pass eXbP or Expected sideways pass eXSP to highlight a coach that these actions are Expected to produce no goals.

Saints have the highest eXVD Expected verbal diarrhea.

I am having a curry takeaway but normally on Saturday if Saints win. I'm expecting a Saints win based on past, present, future and historical data.

Sheffield United xG is higher but Preston winning 3-2.

Exactly. Football itself is losing its sense of direction. There's more focus on what the score should say that what is actually happening.

Tomorrow Blackburn xG 0.1, Southampton xg 0.1. It's going to be close.

What a load of complete fucking shit.  The manager is some sort of piss-taking twat for even bringing that bullshit up.  No wonder we’re so shit with a fucking idiot like him running the side.

Last season after 11 games Luton had 11 points. We have 12 points after 11. It really is time to start putting teams away and winning games. Two wins from 11 is quite frankly relegation form, and not acceptable with the squad we have.

The season starts v Blackburn- please 🤞🤞

What this XG bollocks ? Why do these nerdy pricks get the wank wipes out over it ?

All we care about is points on the table and hitting the fucking onion bag once in a while......

Lose tommorow and Still can jog on....

Adam Armstrong wastes several chances and is yanked, thus giving Damion Downs a chance to break the harrowing 0-0 draw near extra time. The American will score accidentally, lifting Still and the Saints to victory. 1-0. The stuff of dreams, right.

Posted

If you're a Blackburn fan you'd be convinced that Armstrong will score and he probably will.

And as we all know, all we need to do is score and then everything falls into place no problem.

Blackburn are fucking shit. So for us a win is bare bare minimum and gets us back to 2 whole wins in 10 games which is utterly pathetic for the investment and expectation of this club. A win will be nice but will prove nothing re Still or the direction of this club.

I remember it being trotted out by Brighton, as a reason to not sack their manager. Their xG was high. Despite not scoring lots of goals and hovering above the relegation zone, they saw the solution in  ringing in more clinical strikers and improving that element.

Since then, every club and manager trots it out in the face of disaster and to ward off sackings. Media obsession with a single stat doesn't help.

The above fails to take into account that this wasn't the only thing Brighton looked at; they knew what they were doing; had a clear plan on where they wanted to be; could build a squad to support it; didn't employ Rasmus; led rather than followed all of it including on resale around a core for sustainability. SR are sad bandwagon jumpers by comparison.

The great Saints team of the early 80s that almost won the league employed one-touch, rapier-advance football. It was incredibly exhilarating and wonderful to behold.

You mean we concede a goal immediately because we're all pissing ourselves at the fact we have just scored?

I find that in football, greatness and shitness isn't a flat line with one either end, it's a circle.

So when something is so great, it becomes shit, and when something is so shit, it actually becomes good.

Now today's game is between two rancid teams, who will serve up some awful football, but it'll be so bad, it'll make the game great. And because of that, I'll be tuning in and I'll be rewarded with a match of epic shitness.

Look at the first half hour from Tuesday night, we can clearly play good football at this level and have players of ability. The issue is the focus and tactics to make this much more consistent. Can we make that happen is the question rather than our quality.
